BACKGROUND: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) and calcium and phosphorus metabolism disorder are important complications in haemodialysis patients. Parathyroidectomy (PTX) may prevent or delay the progress of vascular calcification in haemodialysis patients.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impacts of PTX on calcium and phosphorus metabolism, arterial calcification and arterial stiffness in haemodialysis patients with SHPT.
METHODS: Twenty-one SHPT-haemodialysis patients were selected for PTX. The preoperative and postoperative 1-year scores of coronary artery calcification were measured via

Hypophosphatemia was induced in 2 cows by reducing phosphorus content in their feed after parturition. Serum inorganic phosphorus (Pi) values decreased to 1 mg/dl within 10 days after parturition; and RBC adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and reduced glutathione values decreased to 50 and 70% of baseline values, respectively. Methemoglobin concentration was moderately higher than normal. These changes preceded the onset of hemolysis, and anemia progressed with decreases in PCV, hemoglobin concentration, and RBC counts. Serum Pi resumed its normal value when anemia was most severe. This RBC disor

Only limited data is available on the management of the chronic kidney disease-associated bone and mineral metabolism disorder (CKD-MBD) in the pre-dialysis stages of CKD in France. A better knowledge of current management habits could lead to an improvement in the implementation of international recommendations (KDIGO). The 3rd version of the French Phosphorus and Calcium Survey Photo-Graphe (Sanofi) included a cohort of CKD stages 4 and 5 patients, whose aim was to examine the prevalence of CKD-MBD and the quality of its management in patients under the care of 62 nephrologists from over 20

OBJECTIVE: The serum calcium (Ca)-to-phosphorus (P) ratio has been proposed to identify patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and chronic hypoparathyroidism (HPT), but it has never been tested in pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP). The aim of this study was to test the performance of Ca/P ratio in PHP diagnosis compared with that in healthy subjects and patients with HPT for differential diagnosis.
DESIGN: A retrospective, cross-sectional, and observational study was carried out.
METHODS: Serum Ca, P, creatinine, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and albumin were collected. Ca and P were expressed

BACKGROUND: Uremia (UR) is caused by increased UR-related toxins in the bloodstream. We explored the mechanism of enterogenous toxin methylmalonic acid (MMA) in calcium-phosphorus metabolic disorder in UR rats via the Wnt/β-catenin pathway.
METHODS: The UR rat model was established by 5/6 nephrectomy. The fecal bacteria of UR rats were transplanted into Sham rats. Sham rats were injected with exogenous MMA or Salinomycin (SAL). Pathological changes in renal/colon tissues were analyzed. MMA concentration, levels of renal function indicators, serum inflammatory factors, Ca2+/P3+, and parathyroi

Background: Recently, chronic kidney disease (CKD)-mineral and bone disorder (MBD) has become one of common complications occurring in CKD patients. Therefore, development of a new treatment for CKD-MBD is very important in the clinic. In China, Fucoidan (FPS), a natural compound of Laminaria japonica has been frequently used to improve renal dysfunction in CKD. However, it remains elusive whether FPS can ameliorate CKD-MBD. FGF23-Klotho signaling axis is reported to be useful for regulating mineral and bone metabolic disorder in CKD-MBD. This study thereby aimed to clarify therapeutic effects

Mortality rates in ESRD are unacceptably high. Disorders of mineral metabolism (hyperphosphatemia, hypercalcemia, and secondary hyperparathyroidism) are potentially modifiable. For determining associations among disorders of mineral metabolism, mortality, and morbidity in hemodialysis patients, data on 40,538 hemodialysis patients with at least one determination of serum phosphorus and calcium during the last 3 mo of 1997 were analyzed. Unadjusted, case mix-adjusted, and multivariable-adjusted relative risks of death were calculated for categories of serum phosphorus, calcium, calcium x phosph

The clinical and pathophysiological significance and epidemiology of magnesium and phosphorus excess and deficit are discussed. In daily routine both ions largely remain "the forgotten electrolytes". With both elements deficits are clinically more important than excesses. Dietary intake, gastrointestinal and renal losses, shifts between intra- and extracellular fluid and sequestration within the extracellular compartment are the essential factors which determine body stores and the extracellular concentration of the electrolyte. The clinical signs of excess and deficit often lack specificity a

Disorders of phosphate metabolism are caused by a disrupted balance between intestinal absorption and renal excretion or by an altered distribution between intra- and extracellular pools. Hyperphosphatemia per se does not have any clinical effects except for ectopic calfifications. The most frequent cause is chronic renal disease. Other causes - increased tubular reabsorption as seen for instance un hypoparathyroïdism; increased intertinal absorption as seen with vitamin D excess; redistribution to the extracellular pool, as seen with the tumor lysis syndrome, are uncommon; and no one cause is

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The study of phosphorus physiology and investigations into clinical disorders of phosphorus metabolism has blossomed over the past decade. Recent work has confirmed and further extended our knowledge of basic mechanisms of phosphorus metabolism.
RECENT FINDINGS: This review will focus on FGF-23 and Klotho, and on the recent further dissection of their roles in phosphorus and skeletal metabolism. Additionally, this review will detail recent studies that implicate a role for these phosphaturic and vitamin D regulating factors in extraskeletal calcification, including that occ

In ten male hypophosphataemic hypercalciuric recurrent renal stone formers with absorptive hypercalciuria and ten male normophosphataemic normocalciuric control persons, fasting plasma and urine chemistry was studied throughout the day under basal conditions and following an oral phosphorus load. After overnight fasting, plasma phosphorus and TMP/GFR were lower and urinary calcium higher in patients than in controls. Both in patients and controls, plasma phosphorus rose throughout the morning hours. In the afternoon, plasma phosphorus was almost equal in patients and controls. The circadian ri

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Disorders of mineral metabolism are more common in African Americans with CKD than in European Americans with CKD. Previous studies have focused on the differences in mineral metabolism by self-reported race, making it difficult to delineate the importance of environmental compared with biologic factors.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: In a cross-sectional analysis of 3013 participants of the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort study with complete data, we compared markers of mineral metabolism (phosphorus, calcium, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid ho

Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common diabetes mellitus complications associated with mediocalcinosis of the lower extremities, a significant decrease in feet bone mineral density, and a high incidence of cardiovascular disease. In most cases, calcium-phosphorus metabolism changes occur in patients with diabetic neuroarthropathy, or Charcot foot, when we can observe feet local osteoporosis, which in 90% of cases associated with a vessel's calcification of the lower extremities in the majority of diabetes population. A large number of studies presented literature have demonstrated that
