Experimental-design Specific Changes in Spontaneous EEG and During Intermittent Photic Stimulation by High Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

Electroencephalography (EEG) as a biomarker of neuromodulation by High Definition transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS) offers promise as both techniques are deployable and can be integrated into a single head-gear. The present research addresses experimental design for separating focal EEG effect of HD-tDCS in the '4-cathode × 1-anode' (4 × 1) montage over the left motor area (C3). We assessed change in offline EEG at the homologous central (C3, C4), and occipital (O1, O2) locations. Interhemispheric asymmetry was accessed for background EEG at standard frequency bands; and for th

Greater hemodynamic response to photic stimulation in schizophrenic patients: an echo planar MRI study.

Functional echo planar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probably will be of importance in assessing brain abnormalities in psychiatric disorders. The authors used functional MRI to measure the relative magnitude of the change in image signal intensity, reflecting changes in regional neuronal activity caused by photic stimulation, in eight patients with schizophrenia and nine normal comparison subjects. The mean signal intensity change in the primary visual cortex was significantly greater in patients with schizophrenia (mean = 4.6%, SD = 1.5%) than in normal comparison subjects (mean = 3.1%, S

[Detection of retinal visual field defects by sectorial photic stimulation in scotopic luminance ERG].

We developed an electroretinographic procedure to assess visual field defects due to dysfunction of the outer retinal layers. For this objective we determined the amplitude/intensity function of the scotopic b-wave to full field (100 degrees of visual angle), quadrant and hemifield stimulation in 14 healthy volunteers and in patients with visual field disturbances. To prevent stray light effects, we confined the test light illuminance to 10(1.3) of the extrapolated normal ERG threshold (about 10(4.2) the sensory dark threshold). Whereas patients with dysfunction of the proximal retinal layers

Intermittent photic stimulation triggering a temporal lobe seizure in a patient with schizencephaly and pachygyria.

Photic stimulation is a common trigger for generalized epilepsies but may rarely incite focal seizures. Aside from documented cases of photosensitive occipital lobe epilepsies, few reported instances exist of focal epilepsies being triggered by intermittent photic stimulation. The case of a 12 year-old male with known schizencephaly, pachygyria, and right temporal lobe epilepsy triggered by photic stimulation is reported. To our knowledge, this is only the eighth reported case of photosensitive temporal lobe epilepsy.

[The effect of visual deafferentation on changes in the cerebral blood flow during photic stimulation].

With the aid of transcranial dopplerography, linear velocity of the blood flow was recorded in major cerebral vessels in resting and in photostimulation in 18 healthy subjects and 7 patients with unilateral lesion of visual pathway and exclusion of one half of the field of vision. The photostimulation accelerated the blood flow in middle cerebral arteries by 4.3% and in posterior cerebral arteries by 26.3% in healthy subjects. No acceleration of the blood flow occurred in posterior cerebral artery on the side of unilateral lesion of visual pathways.

Reflex syncope due to exaggerated cardioinhibitory vagal response to photic stimulation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Transient loss of consciousness is a common presentation to emergency departments, medical assessment units, and cardiology and neurology outpatients. It is a presentation frequently resulting in hospital admission, or multiple presentations to health services and in up to a third of cases a specific aetiology is not identified. Reexamining the added value of intermittent photic stimulation and hyperventilation in routine EEG practice.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the added value of hyperventilation (HV) and intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) to the routine electroencephalogram (EEG). METHOD: This is a retrospective review of 1,172 successive EEGs. The records with evidence of epileptogenic activity were identified and further analyzed to identify if the activation techniques could trigger the expression of epileptic activity not seen otherwise in the nonactivated tracing. RESULTS: Activation procedures provided additional information in 9.5% of the abnormal EEG files. They helped establish the diagnosis of an epileptic disor

Burst-Suppression EEG Reactivity to Photic Stimulation-A Translational Biomarker in Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury.

The reactivity of an electroencephalogram (EEG) to external stimuli is impaired in comatose patients showing burst-suppression (BS) patterns following hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI). We explored the reactivity of BS induced by isoflurane in rat models of HIBI and controls using intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) delivered to one eye. The relative time spent in suppression referred to as the suppression ratio (SR) was measured on the contralateral fronto-occipital cortical EEG channel. The BS reactivity (BSR) was defined as the decrease in the SR during IPS from the baseline before sti

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy: elevated visual cortex lactate unresponsive to photic stimulation--a localized 1H-MRS study.

We used localized H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to study the metabolic changes in the visual cortex of patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Measurement of metabolite levels in the occipital visual cortex obtained in the dark with seven normal subjects and with four patients (all four of whom had Kearns-Sayre syndrome [KSS]) showed high lactate levels in the patients. Photic stimulation (PS) in four normal volunteers showed that lactate increased immediately after the start of PS and that it decreased to the baseline level with continued PS. Lactate in the resting state was

Functional magnetic resonance imaging of the cortical response to photic stimulation in humans following optic neuritis recovery.

Recovery from optic neuritis has been shown to be associated with an abnormal functional MRI (fMRI) response following exposure of the eye to an epoch based (ON-OFF design) flickering photic stimulus. Visual cortex activation is reduced during photic stimulation, whilst extra-occipital areas are extensively activated with a peak blood oxygen level dependent response during the OFF phase of the stimulus paradigm. We performed a further fMRI experiment to determine whether the abnormal extra-occipital response is a phase-specific phenomenon or whether it results from a delayed haemodynamic respo

Photic stimulation-induced alteration of brain energy metabolism measured by 31P-MR spectroscopy in patients with MELAS.

We examined brain energy metabolism by phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS) in the occipital cortex in a mother and a daughter with MELAS (mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes) during photic stimulation. The peak area ratio of phosphocreatine markedly decreased during photic stimulation, and subsequently increased after the stimulation. This method, photic stimulation-31P-MRS, may be useful in assessing brain energy metabolism in neurological diseases.

Interhemispheric EEG coherence in never-medicated patients with paranoid schizophrenia: analysis at rest and during photic stimulation.

We assessed functional relationships between hemispheres by calculating interhemispheric EEG coherence at rest and during photic stimulation in 18 never-medicated patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 30 control subjects. Although no significant group differences were found in the resting EEG, the schizophrenic patients had significantly higher coherence on EEGs recorded during photic stimulation, compared to the control subjects. In this study, we also examined the changes in interhemispheric coherence from rest to the stimulus condition (i.e., stimulation-related coherence reactivity); th

Mental imagery of photic stimulation provokes paroxysmal EEG activity in a photosensitive patient who self-induces seizures.

This article reports a case of a 14 year-old male photosensitive epileptic patient who was able to induce fits subjectively by the mental imagery of the effective visual stimuli. The patient underwent a comprehensive electroencephalographic (EEG) examination including hyperventilation. The basic EEG showed abnormalities. Intermittent photic (IPS) and pattern stimulations (PtnS), evoked photo and pattern paroxysmal responses (PPRs) within a wide range of frequencies for 2-50 flashes per second (fps) and 0.5-6 cycles per degree (cdp) respectively. The patient was able to reconstruct the PPRs men

Direct crosstalk between adult human retinas as suggested by interocular transfer of neurovascular coupling through photic stimulation.

Crosstalk mechanisms between retinas were never documented in humans despite being documented for several other species, including non-human primates. Results of the first-in-human study that documents the crosstalk between retinas by measuring the vascular response in one retina to the photic stimulation of the contralateral eye in health and disease are reported herein. A stimulation apparatus was developed and integrated into an adaptive-optics fundus camera to image 32 healthy control (HC) subjects and 20 type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. Ipsilateral and contralateral neurovascular c

Diagnostic Value of Intermittent Photic Stimulation Among Adult Patients in a Tertiary Referral Epilepsy Center: A Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: Photosensitivity is a phenomenon that may be elicited by standardized intermittent photic stimulation during EEG recording and is detected more frequently in children and adolescents. Nevertheless, at our Epilepsy Center, we routinely assess photosensitivity in all newly referred adult patients. In this investigation, we sought to address the diagnostic yield under the prerequisites described. METHODS: We reanalyzed all routine EEG recordings among referrals to the department of adults during the first six months of 2019, including a simultaneous video that is always coregistered in

The value of visioning: Augmenting EMDR with alpha-band alternating bilateral photic stimulation for trauma treatment in schizophrenia.

The value of addressing trauma-related issues in psychosis with therapies such as ṇEMDR is being increasingly recognised. The hypothesis of this paper is that augmentation of EMDR with alternating bilateral photic stimulation (ABPS) is especially suited to those on the schizotypal spectrum. Not only does Alternating Bilateral Photic Stimulation (ABPS) at alpha frequencies (8-12 Hz) directly compensate EEG deficits of schizophrenia by photic driving, it also stimulates pseudo-hallucinatory visual imagery (visions) and a waking dream state. In contrast to the REM-sleep state, the dorsolateral pr
