Modeling and optimization of astaxanthin accumulation in Haematococcus pluvialis cultivated in outdoor five-row parallel horizontal tubular photobioreactors.

Outdoor cultivation is challenged by natural environmental instability, especially daily and seasonal variations in light and temperature, which critically affect astaxanthin accumulation in Haematococcus pluvialis. Thus, developing robust models to clarify the relationship between these parameters and astaxanthin yield is essential for improving production. Unlike traditional models that assume constant light and temperature, FFHT-ap (productivity model) and FFHT-ac (content model) were developed for astaxanthin accumulation in heterotrophically pre-cultured H. pluvialis during outdoor photoi

Biotransformation of cimetidine by Chlamydomonas sp. SI-16: CYP450-driven detoxification and immobilized photobioreactor validation.

Cimetidine (CIM), a widely prescribed histamine H2 receptor antagonist, is an emerging global contaminant owing to extensive clinical use and poor removal in conventional wastewater treatment. Herein, an indigenous microalgal strain Chlamydomonas sp. SI-16 with exceptional CIM tolerance was isolated from municipal wastewater, and its biotransformation potential was systematically investigated. The strain maintained robust degradation, with removal rates of 83.3%, 82.4%, and 82.1% at 1, 5, and 10 mg/L initial CIM concentrations, respectively. CIM exposure (10 mg/L) significantly upregulated alg

Remediation of the effect of adding cyanides on an algal/bacterial treatment of a mixture of organic pollutants in a continuous photobioreactor.

The effect of inorganic pollutants on the treatment of organic pollutants using algal/bacterial microcosm was investigated in a continuous photobioreactor. The microcosm was composed of Chlorella vulgaris MM1 and Pseudomonas MT1 and was able to efficiently treat artificial waste-water contaminated with 6.4 salicylate and 2.2 mM phenol at a hydraulic retention time of 4 days. No negative effect was recorded when the waste-water was supplemented with 1.6 mM thiocyanate; however, the treatment efficiency severely deteriorated when the system was challenged with 0.74 mM cyanide. Addition of 2 g Na

Diffusion-based process for carbon dioxide uptake and isoprene emission in gaseous/aqueous two-phase photobioreactors by photosynthetic microorganisms.

Photosynthesis for the generation of fuels and chemicals from cyanobacteria and microalgae offers the promise of a single host organism acting both as photocatalyst and processor, performing sunlight absorption and utilization, as well as CO(2) assimilation and conversion into product. However, there is a need to develop methods for generating, sequestering, and trapping such bio-products in an efficient and cost-effective manner that is suitable for industrial scale-up and exploitation. A sealed gaseous/aqueous two-phase photobioreactor was designed and applied for the photosynthetic generati

Sustainable treatment of sugarcane vinasse using Chlorella sp. in scalable airlift flat-panel photobioreactors: nutrient removal and biomass valorization.

The global production of sugarcane ethanol generates vast amounts of vinasse, a liquid waste by-product requiring treatment to mitigate environmental impacts. Using vinasse as a feedstock for microalgae cultivation offers a sustainable alternative. This study evaluates the performance of the native strain Chlorella sp. MC18 in internal-loop airlift flat-panel photobioreactors (PBR) for treating industrial raw sugarcane vinasse (SCV) while producing biomass. Cultures were grown in diluted, centrifugation-pretreated SCV (5-25% v/v) as the sole nutrient source, with CO2 supplied by aeration. The

Evaluation of photobioreactor heat balance for predicting changes in culture medium temperature due to light irradiation.

Microalgal photosynthesis requires appropriate culture medium temperatures to achieve high photosynthetic performance and to maintain production of a high-quality biomass product. Enclosed systems, such as our conical, helical tubular photobioreactor (HTP), can accomplish high photosynthetic efficiency and the small amount of culture medium used by these systems means that the culture medium temperature may be effectively controlled. On the other hand, because a high ratio of surface area to culture medium volume leads to rapid heating under the illumination condition and substantial heat loss

Sunlight-driven biogas biodesulfurization in an alkaline bioscrubber at low gas residence time coupled to an open photobioreactor.

This study addresses the application of an alkaline bacteria-microalgal process for biogas desulfurization. The bacterial consortium, composed of the genus Thioalkalivibrio, in conjunction with the microalgae Picochlorum sp. and Scenedesmus sp., fosters hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal from biogas and promotes its conversion to sulfate. The performance of a bioscrubber (BS) coupled with a high-rate algal pond (HRAP) exposed to outdoor conditions for the removal of various H2S loads from synthetic biogas was analyzed. During diurnal period, the oxygen produced by the microalgae in the HRAP, in co

Experimental and simulation-based reactor-scale strategies for engineering high mixotrophic synthesis, carbon sequestration and inter-trophic synergy in algal photobioreactors.

This experimental and simulation study employs radial sparging - along with other reactor-scale parameters, such as illumination intensity and carbon (CO2 and acetate) and nitrogen loading - to enhance carbon sequestration and inter-trophic synergy in mixotrophic cultivation of Chlorella sorokiniana in bubble-column photobioreactors. Radial mixing produces (3-5 times) higher flashlight frequencies, which enhance the synergy between phototrophy and heterotrophy and increase CO2 sequestration by 23-72 % at 0.04-6 % CO2 loading and 10,500-14,000 lx light. Lipid amounts obtained at 10,500, 12,000

Effect of hydrodynamics and mass transfer processes on biomass production of Synechococcus HS-9 cultivated using rectangular airlift photobioreactors with baffles.

Synechococcus HS-9 is being recognized as one of the potential strains for biodiesel production due to its high levels of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), which are around 70-78%. The first stage in producing microalgae biodiesel involves the biomass production process through a photobioreactor cultivation process. In addition to microalgae strains, the optimization of the photobioreactor's performance is essential for producing high biomass. In this case, biotic factors (microalgae inoculum) and abiotic factors (nutrients, temperature, light, pH, carbon dioxide (CO2), fluid flow, hydrodynamic
