Low-Cost Smartphone-Based Photogrammetry for the Analysis of Cranial Deformation in Infants.

BACKGROUND: Cranial deformation, including deformational plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, and craniosynostosis, is a condition that affects a large number of infants. Despite its prevalence, there are no standards for the systematic evaluation of the cranial deformation. Usually, the deformation is measured manually by the use of calipers. Experts, however, do not agree on the suitability of these measurements to correctly represent the deformation. Other methodologies for evaluation include 3-dimensional (3D) photography and radiologic scanners. These techniques require either patient's sedation

From pocket to profile: Scale-free pelvic sex estimation from 3D photogrammetry.

BACKGROUND: Biological sex estimation is a cornerstone of the forensic biological profile, and the adult pelvis remains the most informative skeletal region due to pronounced sexual dimorphism. At the same time, three-dimensional documentation of skeletal evidence is rapidly expanding beyond computed tomography and laboratory scanners toward inexpensive, accessible approaches such as photogrammetry-with mobile phone cameras. While the reliability of photogrammetry for osteological documentation has been supported, most established pelvic sexing approaches still assume measurements in absolute

Testing photogrammetry-based techniques for three-dimensional surface documentation in forensic pathology.

Three-dimensional surface technologies particularly close range photogrammetry and optical surface scanning have recently advanced into affordable, flexible and accurate techniques. Forensic postmortem investigation as performed on a daily basis, however, has not yet fully benefited from their potentials. In the present paper, we tested two approaches to 3D external body documentation - digital camera-based photogrammetry combined with commercial Agisoft PhotoScan(®) software and stereophotogrammetry-based Vectra H1(®), a portable handheld surface scanner. In order to conduct the study three h

A Quantitative Analysis of Facial Asymmetry in Torticollis Using 3-Dimensional Photogrammetry.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether children with torticollis have quantifiably greater facial asymmetry than their age-matched controls using 3-dimensional (3D) photogrammetry. DESIGN: We retrospectively analyzed patients diagnosed with torticollis and age-matched volunteers who underwent 3D photogrammetry of their faces. We calculated the root mean square deviation (RMSD) between native and reflected facial images, as a measure of asymmetry. Two observers independently measured RMSD values for all study participants. The Spearman correlation coefficient evaluated interobserver reliability. The Wil

Inferring sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) sex and developmental stage using aerial photogrammetry.

Demographic data (i.e. sex and age) are fundamental for analyzing behaviour patterns and evaluating the reproductive potential of a population. However, determining these traits in the wild can be challenging, particularly for marine animals with concealed genitals that spend most of their time underwater. Here, we developed a minimally invasive method to infer the developmental stage and sex of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) off the Galápagos Islands (N = 51) using uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry. We leveraged historic whaling data on sperm whale growth and sexual dimorphi

Combining Google Earth historical imagery and UAV photogrammetry for urban development analysis.

Rural-urban migration often triggers additional demand for housing and infrastructural development to cater for the growing population in urban areas. Consequently, town planners and urban development authorities need to understand the urban development trend to make sustainable urban planning decisions. Yet, methods to analyse changes and trends in urban spatial development are often complex and require costly data collection. This article thus presents a simplified method to analyse the urban development trend in an area. The method integrates Google Earth (GE) historical imagery (baseline d

All-parameter calibration method of the on-orbit multi-view dynamic photogrammetry system.

Photogrammetry (PG) can present accurate data to evaluate the functional performance of large space structures. For camera calibration and orientation, the On-orbit Multi-view Dynamic Photogrammetry System (OMDPS) lacks appropriate spatial reference data. A multi-data fusion calibration method for all parameters for this kind of system is proposed in this paper as a solution to this issue. Firstly, a multi-camera relative position model is developed to solve the reference camera position unconstrained problem in the full-parameter calibration model of the OMDPS in accordance with the imaging m

Quantitative facial asymmetry: using three-dimensional photogrammetry to measure baseline facial surface symmetry.

BACKGROUND: Although symmetry is hailed as a fundamental goal of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, our tools for measuring this outcome have been limited and subjective. With the advent of three-dimensional photogrammetry, surface geometry can be captured, manipulated, and measured quantitatively. Until now, few normative data existed with regard to facial surface symmetry. Here, we present a method for reproducibly calculating overall facial symmetry and present normative data on 100 subjects. METHODS: We enrolled 100 volunteers who underwent three-dimensional photogrammetry of their fac
