Encoding and decoding photoperiod in the mammalian pars tuberalis.

In mammals, the nocturnal melatonin signal is well established as a key hormonal indicator of seasonal changes in day-length, providing the brain with an internal representation of the external photoperiod. The pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary gland is the major site of expression of the G-coupled receptor MT1 in the brain and is considered as the main site of integration of the photoperiodic melatonin signal. Recent studies have revealed how the photoperiodic melatonin signal is encoded and conveyed by the PT to the brain and the pituitary, but much remains to be resolved. The development

Influence of photoperiod on hormones, behavior, and immune function.

Photoperiodism is the ability of plants and animals to measure environmental day length to ascertain time of year. Central to the evolution of photoperiodism in animals is the adaptive distribution of energetically challenging activities across the year to optimize reproductive fitness while balancing the energetic tradeoffs necessary for seasonally-appropriate survival strategies. The ability to accurately predict future events requires endogenous mechanisms to permit physiological anticipation of annual conditions. Day length provides a virtually noise free environmental signal to monitor an

Photoperiodism of Diapause Induction in the Silkworm, Bombyx mori.

The silkworm Bombyx mori exhibits a photoperiodic response (PR) for embryonic diapause induction. This article provides a comprehensive review of literature on the silkworm PR, starting from early works on population to recent studies uncovering the molecular mechanism. Makita Kogure (1933) conducted extensive research on the PR, presenting a pioneering paper on insect photoperiodism. In the 1970s and 80s, artificial diets were developed, and the influence of nutrition on PR was well documented. The photoperiodic photoreceptor has been investigated from organ to molecular level in the silkworm

Circadian clock mechanism driving mammalian photoperiodism.

The annual photoperiod cycle provides the critical environmental cue synchronizing rhythms of life in seasonal habitats. In 1936, Bünning proposed a circadian-based coincidence timer for photoperiodic synchronization in plants. Formal studies support the universality of this so-called coincidence timer, but we lack understanding of the mechanisms involved. Here we show in mammals that long photoperiods induce the circadian transcription factor BMAL2, in the pars tuberalis of the pituitary, and triggers summer biology through the eyes absent/thyrotrophin (EYA3/TSH) pathway. Conversely, long-dur

Photoperiodism in humans and other primates: evidence and implications.

Most of the anatomical and molecular substrates of the system that encodes changes in photoperiod in the duration of melatonin secretion, and the receptor molecules that read this signal, have been shown to be conserved in monkeys and humans, and the functions of this system appear to be intact from the level of the retina to the level of the melatonin-duration signal of change of season. While photoperiodic seasonal breeding has been shown to occur in monkeys, it remains unclear whether photoperiod and mediation of photoperiod's effects by melatonin influence human reproduction. Epidemiologic

Effects of photoperiod and temperature on testicular function in amphibians.

Most amphibians present an annual testicular cycle characterized by a quiescent period (late autumn-winter) and a spermatogenic period (spring and summer). At the end of the period of spermatogenesis undifferentiated interstitial cells transform into steroid-secreting Leydig cells which regress in spring at the beginning of the new spermatogenetic cycle. The testicular cycle is controlled by the pituitary gonadotropin levels which are high in autumn and winter, low in spring and increase temporarily in the middle of summer. Photoperiod and temperature seem to be the most important external fac

Photoperiod can entrain circannual rhythms in pinealectomized European hamsters.

In mammals, the pineal hormone melatonin is thought to be essential to process environmental photoperiodic information. In this study, we demonstrate in a circannual species, the European hamster Cricetus cricetus, the existence of a melatonin-independent second pathway. In 4 physiological parameters (reproduction, body weight, activity pattern, body temperature), a large majority of pinealectomized European hamsters were entrained to an accelerated photoperiodic regime. It compressed the natural variations in the photoperiod to a 6-month cycle, which allowed us to record up to 6 complete phys

The photoperiod transducer melatonin and the immune-hematopoietic system.

The pineal neurohormone melatonin functionally synchronizes the organism with the photoperiod. It is now well recognized that melatonin also plays an important immunoregulatory role. T-helper cells bear G-protein coupled melatonin cell-membrane receptors and, perhaps, melatonin nuclear receptors. Activation of melatonin receptors enhances the release of T-helper cell type 1 (Th1) cytokines, such as gamma-interferon and interleukin-2, as well as of novel opioid cytokines which crossreact immunologically with both interleukin-4 and dynorphin B. Melatonin has also been reported to enhance the pro

Reproductive and nonreproductive responsiveness to photoperiod in laboratory rats.

Laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus) have been traditionally considered nonphotoperiodic because reproductive function is unaffected by day length. However, at least three experimental manipulations of rats--perinatal androgen injection, peripubertal androgen implants, and peripubertal olfactory bulbectomy--have been reported to unmask reproductive responsiveness to photoperiod. The physiological means by which early testosterone treatment or olfactory bulbectomy affect the expression of photoperiodism were hypothesized to operate through similar underlying mechanism(s) that involved gonadotrop

Effect of pinealectomy, eye enucleation, and melatonin treatment on ovarian activity and vitellogenin levels in the catfish exposed to short photoperiod or long photoperiod.

To investigate the relative importance of pineal, and eyes, and melatonin treatment on ovarian activity, catfish. Heteropneustes fossilis subjected to pinealectomy, eye enucleation, or both were exposed to short (LD 9:15) or long (LD 14:10) photoperiod during the different stages of the annual reproductive cycle. During the preparatory period, pinealectomy accelerated ovarian recrudescence under long photoperiod, but no effects of pinealectomy were observed under short photoperiod. Pineal has no influence on ovarian activity during the prespawning and spawning periods of the reproductive cycle

Maternal transfer of photoperiodic information in Siberian hamsters. IV. Peripubertal reproductive development in the absence of maternal photoperiodic signals during gestation.

Peripubertal reproductive development of Siberian hamsters is influenced by photoperiodic information received during gestation; the maternal pineal is important for this process. We observed that in the absence of the maternal pineal, the fetus appears to receive no information about gestational photoperiods. This is not the equivalent of receipt of a long-day signal by the fetus. Pinealectomized and sham-operated pregnant females were exposed to photoperiods of 12L:12D, 14L:10D, 16L:8D, or constant light (LL); young were reared from birth to 28 days of age in LL or 14L:10D. Photoperiodic and circadian bifurcation theories of depression and mania.

Seasonal effects on mood have been observed throughout much of human history.  Seasonal changes in animals and plants are largely mediated through the changing photoperiod (i.e., the photophase or duration of daylight).  We review that in mammals, daylight specifically regulates SCN (suprachiasmatic nucleus) circadian organization and its control of melatonin secretion.  The timing of melatonin secretion interacts with gene transcription in the pituitary pars tuberalis to modulate production of TSH (thyrotropin), hypothalamic T3 (triiodothyronine), and tuberalin peptides which modulate pituita

Short photoperiods attenuate central responses to an inflammogen.

In most parts of the world, environmental conditions vary in a predictable seasonal manner. Thus, seasonal variation in reproductive timing and immune function has emerged in some species to cope with disparate seasonal demands. During the long days of spring and summer when food availability is high and thermoregulatory demands low, Siberian hamsters invest in reproduction, whereas during the harsh short days of winter hamsters divert energy away from reproductive activities and modify immune capabilities. Many seasonal adaptations can be recapitulated in a laboratory setting by adjusting day

Kisspeptin mediates the photoperiodic control of reproduction in hamsters.

The KiSS-1 gene encodes kisspeptin, the endogenous ligand of the G-protein-coupled receptor GPR54. Recent data indicate that the KiSS-1/GPR54 system is critical for the regulation of reproduction and is required for puberty onset. In seasonal breeders, reproduction is tightly controlled by photoperiod (i.e., day length). The Syrian hamster is a seasonal model in which reproductive activity is promoted by long summer days (LD) and inhibited by short winter days (SD). Using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, we show that KiSS-1 is expressed in the arcuate nucleus of LD hamsters. Imp

The photoperiod entrains the molecular clock of the rat pineal.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus-pineal system acts as a neuroendocrine transducer of seasonal changes in the photoperiod by regulating melatonin formation. In the present study, we have investigated the extent to which the photoperiod entrains the nonself-cycling oscillator in the Sprague-Dawley rat pineal. For this purpose, the 24-h expression of nine clock genes (bmal1, clock, per1, per2, per3, cry1, cry2, dec1 and dec2) and the aa-nat gene was monitored under light-dark 8 : 16 and light-dark 16 : 8 in the rat pineal by using real-time RT-PCR. The 24-h pattern of the expression of only per1, dec

Photoperiodic effects on endocrine and immune function in cattle.

Photoperiod is the most common environmental factor monitored by animals to alter long-term physiological processes, particularly reproduction. As cattle are not strict seasonal breeders, the influence of photoperiod on cattle has been studied less extensively than in other large mammals, but the lack of effect of daylength on reproduction enhances the utility of the bovine model in examining the effect of this factor on growth, lactation and immune function. In cattle, as in other species, increasing exposure to light reduces the duration of melatonin secretion. A long day pattern of melatoni

Photoperiodicity and annual rhythms of wars and violent crimes.

The seasonal variations of individual violent crimes, i.e. sexual offenses and aggravated assaults, and non-violent offenses, i.e. burglary, in Israel, the USA, Denmark and New South Wales, Australia, representing four continents, were analyzed. Seasonal variations in the opening dates of wars were similarly analyzed. In northern hemisphere countries, although non-violent offenses are distributed equally throughout the year, individual violent crimes and collective acts of hostility are characterized by an annual rhythm of incidence, with a peak in the months of July-August and a nadir in Dece

Photoperiodic control of sexual maturation in Muscovy drakes.

The influence of photoperiodic control on reproductive development was investigated in Muscovy drakes by the use of night-interruption photoschedules consisting of a main photofraction of 6 hr and a secondary photofraction of 1 hr, interrupting the dark period 6 hr (Group A), 8 hr (Group B), 10 hr (Group C), and 12 hr (Group D) after dawn. Sexual maturity, assessed by the increase in plasma concentrations of luteinising hormone (LH) and testosterone, was achieved in all groups by Week 34. However, significant differences in the precocity of the rate of sexual maturation were evident on Week 27

Seasonality of reproduction in sheep and its control by photoperiod.

Seasonality of the reproductive cycle in sheep is a general phenomenon for mid-latitude breeds. The proximal part (breeding season) and also partially distal part (end of gestation and beginning of lactation) of this cycle is controlled by photoperiod, whatever the form of light regimens. Data are presented which indicate that male and female do not necessarily have the same photoperiodic sensitivity. Gonadal stimulation in the ram starts 1.5-2 months earlier than in the ewe under annual variations. Photoperiod controls the reproductive cycle by the intermediary of the hypothalamo-pituitary ax
