Solar-driven H2O2 photosynthesis offers a sustainable route to on-site oxidant production, yet the selective reduction of triplet O2 to spin-paired H2O2 remains kinetically challenging. Covalent organic framework (COF) photocatalysts have largely focused on charge separation and active-site reactivity, while overlooking the spin character of electrons transferred to O2. Here we discover that chiralization renders COFs significantly enhanced production of H2O2, and report a chiralization strategy for spin-regulated H2O2 photosynthesis in β-ketoenamine-linked COFs. The chiral frameworks enable s

Marine picocyanobacteria are abundant photosynthetic organisms of global importance. They coexist in the ocean with cyanophages-viruses that infect cyanobacteria. Cyanophages carry many auxiliary metabolic genes acquired from their hosts that are thought to redirect host metabolism for the phage's benefit1-5. One such gene is nblA, which is present in multiple cyanophage families2,6-8. Under nutrient deprivation cyanobacterial NblA is responsible for inducing proteolytic degradation of the phycobilisome9-11, the large cyanobacterial photosynthetic light-harvesting complex. This increases the p

Photosynthesis under fluctuating irradiance is understudied, especially its response to elevated CO2 and temperature in field environments. We measured photosynthesis after a single-step irradiance change and during a series of lightflecks for rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown under combinations of two CO2 levels (ambient and elevated by 200 μmol mol-l) and two temperature levels (ambient and increased by 2.0 °C) by temperature by free-air CO2 enrichment systems in 2 years. The cumulative CO2 fixation (CCF) during a single-step irradiance increase and during lightflecks was linearly correlated with

Due to predicted global climate change, there have been significant alterations in agricultural production patterns, which had a negative impact on ecosystems as well as the commercial and export prospects for the production of grapevines. The natural biochemistry of grapevines, including their chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, Fv/Fm ratio, photorespiration, reduced yield, and quality is also anticipated to be negatively impacted by the various effects of light, temperature, and carbon dioxide at elevated scales. Grapevine phenology, physiology, and quality are impacted by the inac

Increasing the availability of fresh vegetables and reducing food waste are essential for healthy and sustainable production. However, fresh-cut vegetables such as lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) often experience rapid quality loss after harvest and processing. To maintain freshness in retail, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) with low oxygen (O2) and high carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, combined with refrigeration, is commonly used. Packaged leaves are then displayed under dark or low-light conditions. The postharvest physiology of lettuce under these conditions (including changes in energ

Mammalian eyes are exposed to visible light but cannot perform photosynthesis. Here, we show that introducing a nanoscale, structurally and functionally preserved thylakoid system, LEAF (light-reaction enriched thylakoid NADPH-foundry), into corneal cells enables light-driven bona fide photosynthetic production of NADPH and ATP, similar to plant leaves, which alleviates oxidative stress and inflammation. LEAF acts in two domains. Intracellularly, it integrates with host cells to supply NADPH and ATP via intact photosynthetic electron transport, restoring redox balance. Extracellularly, photosy

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an essential chemical and potent energy carrier. Its production through solar energy and metal-free photocatalysts is desirable. Organic semiconductors, as a new generation of semiconductors, can form suitable transition state intermediates showing great ability in enhancing the efficiency and selectivity of photocatalytic H2O2 generation, offering a metal-free, green, and more economical solution. However, the smaller Frenkel exciton radius and larger exciton Coulomb binding energy lead to a constrained capacity for exciton dissociation, blocking the way of photoca

Designing and implementing novel COFs with unique 3D topologies stand among the foremost methods for unlocking new structures and functions. Such designs address critical limitations inherent in traditional 2D covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs), including obscure active sites, constrained interlayer charge transport, and suboptimal exciton utilization. This work reports the synthesis of a 3D COF (PhFOONi-COF) featuring a helical-staggered interlayer-connected topology, achieved through sequential covalent assembly and precise nickel anchoring. The resulting hybrid bonding setup naturally cr

Maximum turnover rates of photosynthesis impose an upper limit on global primary production, yet traditional estimation methods remain tedious and prone to significant uncertainty. This research presents a new method and operational instrumentation to deduce the maximum turnover rates of photosynthesis from instantaneous kinetic analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence under saturating background light. Measurements of maximum turnover rates in model species of green algae and diatoms over a range of environmental conditions revealed that the rates vary from 150 to 600 s- 1 per PSII. These rates c

Although Rubisco is the most abundant enzyme globally, it is inefficient for carbon fixation because of its low turnover rate and limited ability to distinguish CO2 and O2, especially under high O2 conditions. To address these limitations, phytoplankton, including cyanobacteria and algae, have evolved CO2-concentrating mechanisms (CCM) that involve compartmentalizing Rubisco within specific structures, such as carboxysomes in cyanobacteria or pyrenoids in algae. Engineering plant chloroplasts to establish similar structures for compartmentalizing Rubisco has attracted increasing interest for i

It has been 60 years since the discovery of C4 photosynthesis, an event that rewrote our understanding of plant adaptation, ecosystem responses to global change, and global food security. Despite six decades of research, one aspect of C4 photosynthesis that remains poorly understood is how the pathway fits into the broader context of adaptive trait spectra, which form our modern view of functional trait ecology. The C4 CO2-concentrating mechanism supports a general C4 plant phenotype capable of fast growth and high resource-use efficiencies. The fast-efficient C4 phenotype has the potential to

Algal photosynthesis contributes to half of global carbon fixation and is enhanced by CO2-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs), which depend on the pyrenoid organelle in eukaryotic species. Despite its importance, the coordination between photosynthesis and other inorganic-carbon using pathways like fatty acid biosynthesis (FAS) remains underexplored. Here, we investigate this interplay using the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. We find that subunits of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase, key in FAS, form protein condensates at the pyrenoid periphery under limiting CO2 and redistribute throughout the

Liebig's law of the minimum states that increasing photosynthetic productivity on nutrient-impoverished soils depends on addressing the most limiting nutrient. Research has identified the roles of different mineral nutrients in photosynthetic processes. However, diffusional and biochemical regulation of photosynthesis both feature patterns of cumulative effects that jointly determine photosynthetic capacity. More importantly, responses to multiple nutrient stresses are not simply additive and require a comprehensive understanding of how these stresses interact and impact photosynthetic perform

C4 photosynthesis is used by the most productive plants on the planet, and compared with the ancestral C3 pathway, it confers a 50% increase in efficiency1. In more than 60 C4 lineages, CO2 fixation is compartmentalized between tissues, and bundle-sheath cells become photosynthetically activated2. How the bundle sheath acquires this alternate identity that allows efficient photosynthesis is unclear. Here we show that changes to bundle-sheath gene expression in C4 leaves are associated with the gain of a pre-existing cis-code found in the C3 leaf. From single-nucleus gene-expression and chromat

The hypoxic environment is among the most important factors that complicates the healing of chronic wounds, such as venous leg ulcers, pressure injuries and diabetic foot ulcers, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. Various oxygen supply treatments are used in clinical practice to improve the hypoxic environment at the wound site. However, problems still occur, such as insufficient oxygen supply, short oxygen infusion time and potential biosafety risks. In recent years, artificial photosynthetic systems have become a research hotspot in the fields of materials and energy. P

Photosynthesis underpins global food production and energy conversion across the biosphere and remains a central target for improving biological and agricultural productivity. Previous methods to improve photosynthetic efficiency in land plants include enhancing carbon fixation, bypassing photorespiration, and optimizing Rubisco efficiency; however, recent advances in algal biology reveal alternative strategies. Here, we review three key traits of algal biology with translational potential for plant biotechnology: chlorophyll c-based light-harvesting systems, pyrenoid-associated carbon-concent

Extreme environments challenge fundamental pillars of photosynthesis: light capture and carbon fixation. Organisms thriving in extreme conditions, such as high and low temperatures, extreme pH levels, and high salinity, have evolved remarkable adaptive mechanisms allowing them to sustain photosynthesis. Research into these adaptations has expanded our understanding of the limits and evolution of photosynthesis, while also providing promising biotechnological applications. In this review, we explore the adaptations that tolerant and extremophilic photosynthetic organisms have evolved, overcomin

INTRODUCTION: Chronic liver disease leads to neurocognitive impairment (NCI) and more advanced liver fibrosis is associated with greater deficits. Further, cognitive performances do not differ significantly among patients affected by diverse types of chronic liver diseases. Thus, it would be useful to have a clinical tool associated with early cognitive change applicable to the HIV-infected population with high HCV prevalence. Aim of the analysis was to assess the association between NCI and aspartate aminotransferase-platelet ratio index (APRI) or Fibrosis-4, which are non-invasive scores use
