Personality development after child abuse was studied in 39 children who had, on average, been admitted to hospital five and a half years previously. In contrast to a control group, the abused children had fewer friends, lower ambitions, and lower self esteem. They were more serious, shy, and subdued on a personality assessment and were more likely than the control children to have behaviour disturbances recorded on a questionnaire for teachers. Their mothers also noted a higher incidence of behaviour disorders than mothers of control children. Child abuse has long term effects on the personal

This article will discuss an evidence-based approach when evaluating a young child presenting with concern for abusive visceral trauma. The types of pediatric visceral injuries along with salient features will be described. Additionally, the approach to assessing these children with clinical data including laboratory screening tests and imaging modalities will be addressed. The pediatric clinician will understand the importance of approaching this population with appropriate clinical vigilance while maintaining a comprehensive, objective, unbiased, evidence-based approach to the medical assess

This article provides an overview of child physical abuse and neglect, and describes the magnitude of the problem and the triggers and factors that place children at risk for abuse and neglect. After examining the legal and clinical definitions of child abuse and neglect, common clinical outcomes and therapeutic strategies are reviewed, including the lifelong poor physical and mental health of victims and evidence-supported treatment interventions. Mandated reporting laws, and facilitating collaboration among child welfare, judicial, and health care systems are considered. Important tools and

Child abuse may result in dramatic short and longtime damage of children's physical and emotional well being. This underscores the clinician's special responsibility to contribute a sound professional and scientific approach to the multiprofessional diagnosis and intervention in suspected child abuse cases. The approach is to correlate the probability of a given finding with the history and comparing it to biomechanical principles. Of concern are especially all serious injuries with an alleged trivial or inadequate for age mechanism, missing, vague or changing patterns of explanation, injuries

This article provides primary care providers, including pediatric nurse practitioners, with a framework for understanding the dynamics of child abuse, recognizing physical abuse injuries, and reporting concerns of suspected physical abuse to child protective services. Three children die in America every day as a result of child abuse or neglect. Many children who have severe injuries at the time that physical abuse is diagnosed have previously presented with less severe injuries, and physical abuse was overlooked. Physical assessment for children presenting with bruises, bite marks, burns, ske

This paper gives a detailed account of 30 cases of childhood deaths caused by physical abuse, detected by the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) team, General Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. They consisted of 12 Malays, 6 Chinese, 9 Indian, and 1 Indonesian child. Three cases could not be ascertained as to their ethnic origin. There were 13 male and 17 female children. The average age of the abused children was 2 years 5 months. The most frequent causes of death were intracranial hemorrhage and intraabdominal trauma. Of the 17 cases of intracranial hemorrhage, only four had X-ray evidence of sku

BACKGROUND: Intergenerational transmission of physical abuse is well-known; however, the potential for contextual effect modification remains unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether the norms of tolerance for child physical abuse modify the intergenerational transmission of physical abuse.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data from the Child Living Standard Survey (grades five and eight) conducted between 2016 and 2018 in three prefectures in Japan was analyzed.
METHODS: The norms of tolerance for child physical abuse were calculated based on the proportion of caregivers who physically abuse t

The purpose of this study is to estimate the gender-specific probability of a violent spouse also physically abusing his or her child within a representative sample. The study is based on a sample of 3,363 American parents interviewed for the 1985 National Family Violence Survey. The study shows that marital violence is a statistically significant predictor of physical child abuse. The greater the amount of violence against a spouse, the greater the probability of physical child abuse by the physically aggressive spouse. This relationship is stronger for husbands than for wives. The probabilit

Now, more than ever, physicians must be willing to suspect child abuse and report their concerns. New information from the past decade warns us that reports of violence against children continue to increase. We are learning that MRI imaging of the head may, in some cases, help date subdural hematomas, but long-term developmental follow-up studies of "shaken" infants are lacking. Intentional thoracic and abdominal injuries carry a high mortality. Finally, new information in the field of child abuse--in particular, physical abuse--is slow to come. It is clear that a number of factors are emerging as necessary criteria for helping physically abused adolescents: The need to establish specific residential treatment units for treating physically abused adolescents. The importance of educational programming to develop community awareness of the seriousness of this issue. The growing need for an awareness is conventional treatment environments to recognize the physically abused adolescent. The need to develop a sensitive and therapeutic approach for such children.

Physical abuse is experienced by approximately 20% of children in Denmark. Healthcare workers issue less than 20% of all reports suspecting physical child abuse to responsible authorities. Insufficient knowledge and other barriers may partly explain this low percentage. Recognition and adequate handling by referral to child protective teams and reporting to local authorities are of paramount importance to prevent mortality, physical and mental morbidity. With this review we hope to enlighten Danish healthcare workers and thereby ensure a qualified course of action for children, who have been s

Child maltreatment includes physical abuse and neglect, and happens in all countries and cultures. Child maltreatment usually results from interactions between several risk factors (such as parental depression, stress, and social isolation). Physicians can incorporate methods to screen for risk factors into their usual appointments with the family. Detection of physical abuse is dependent on the doctor's ability to recognise suspicious injuries, such as bruising, bite marks, burns, bone fractures, or trauma to the head or abdomen. Neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment in the US

Family physicians who are involved in the care of children are likely to encounter child abuse and should be able to recognize its common presentations. A history that is inconsistent with the patient's injuries is the hallmark of physical abuse. A pattern of physical findings, including bruises and fractures in areas unlikely to be accidentally injured, patterned bruises from objects, and circumferential burns or bruises in children not yet mobile, should be viewed as suspicious for child abuse. Family physicians who suspect physical abuse are mandated to make a report to the state child prot

In order to determine the extent to which nurses working in hospitals in the Toronto area experienced abuse, questionnaires were distributed to 2344 nurses working in either a large teaching hospital, a psychiatric hospital or a community hospital. Of the 603 nurses responding to the questionnaire, 199 (33%) had experienced abuse in their last five days at work. There were no statistical differences between the three hospitals in the incidence of abuse. The abuse was mainly verbal, from the patient and during the day shift. Although abuse occurred in all areas of the hospitals and was directed

BACKGROUND: Because most physical abuse goes unreported and researchers largely rely on retrospective reports of childhood abuse or prospective samples with substantiated maltreatment, long-term outcomes of physical abuse in US community samples are unknown. We hypothesized that early childhood physical abuse would prospectively predict adult outcomes in education and economic stability, physical health, mental health, substance use, and criminal behavior.
METHODS: Researchers in two multisite studies recruited children at kindergarten entry and followed them into adulthood. Parents completed

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the likelihood of physical spousal abuse is increased in dependent personality disorder (DPD) compared to other personality disorders. The sample consisted of 305 subjects consecutively admitted to an outpatient department of legal medicine for physical abuse. Using the Structured Clinical Interview for Disorders, screen questionnaire (SCID-II-SQ), the subjects were divided into three groups: without personality disorders (WPD, N=108), with non-dependent personality disorders (NDPD, N=179) and with DPDs (DPD, N=18). First,, the three groups

This report provides guidance in the clinical approach to the evaluation of suspected physical abuse in children. The medical assessment is outlined with respect to obtaining a history, physical examination, and appropriate ancillary testing. The role of the physician may encompass reporting suspected abuse; assessing the consistency of the explanation, the child's developmental capabilities, and the characteristics of the injury or injuries; and coordination with other professionals to provide immediate and long-term treatment and follow-up for victims.
