Exploring the Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Physical Performance: An EEG Study in the Context of High-Intensity Endurance.

BACKGROUND: While the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive function are well-documented, its impact on high-intensity endurance performance and underlying neural mechanisms remains underexplored, especially in the context of search and rescue operations where both physical and mental performance are essential. This study examines the neurophysiological basis of sleep deprivation on high-intensity endurance using electroencephalography (EEG). In this crossover study, twenty firefighters were subjected to both sleep deprivation (SD) and normal sleep conditions, with each participant perform

Associations between androgen levels and endurance training-induced changes in body composition and physical performance in premenopausal females.

We investigated whether a moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) for two menstrual/contraceptive cycles (~8 weeks) alters endogenous androgen concentrations in premenopausal females, and whether baseline androgen concentrations or their changes from baseline to post-intervention are associated with adaptations in body composition and physical performance. Serum total/free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHEA-sulfate (DHEA-S), and sex hormone-binding globulin were analyzed in follicular/luteal phases in eumenorrheic females (EUM, n = 18)

Adding Tat-Beclin1 to an endurance training program promotes additive improvements in physical function in aged male mice.

Autophagy is a hallmark of aging, but it has not been exclusively targeted to attenuate aging-related physical dysfunction. Here, we combined Tat-Beclin1 and endurance training to determine its effect on physical function domains in aged male mice. Mice were randomly divided into Control (N = 5), Tat-Beclin1 (TB, 15 mg/kg, 2×/week, N = 9), Exercise (Exe, 70%-maximal-running-speed, 3×/week, N = 9), and TB+Exe (N = 8) for 1 month in 23-month-old male C57BL/6J mice. Animals were assessed for grip strength (GS), endurance capacity (EC) on a treadmill, and balance and coordination on a rotarod. Gas

Short-Term Combined Tat-Beclin1 and Endurance Training Improves Age-Related Decline in Physical Function in Male Mice.

UNLABELLED: Autophagy is a hallmark of aging, but autophagy-related proteins have not been exclusively targeted to attenuate the progressive decline in physical function associated with aging. Here, we combined Tat-Beclin1, an autophagy agonist, and endurance training to determine whether Tat-Beclin1 enhances exercise adaptation in old male mice. Tat-Beclin1 was administered intraperitoneally (TB group, 15 mg/kg, 2x/week) as a standalone therapy, or in combination with endurance training (TB+Exe group, 70% of maximal running speed 3x/week) for 1 month in 23-month-old male C57BL/6J mice. Effects of a 3-month endurance event on physical performance and body composition: the G2 trans-Greenland expedition.

OBJECTIVE: Prolonged physical exertion with inadequate time for recuperation may result in an overtraining phenomenon characterized by reduced physical strength and endurance capacity. We tested the hypothesis that highly motivated men pushed to the limits of their endurance capacity for 3 months would suffer physical breakdown characterized by loss of lean mass and reduced physical performance capacity. METHODS: Two well-trained men (VO2max > 60 mL/kg/min), aged 25 years, completed an unsupported, 2928-km, south-to-north ski trek across Greenland in 86 days. The trek involved ski marching, t

Adults with lower-limb amputation: Reduced multifidi muscle activity and extensor muscle endurance is associated with worse physical performance.

Trunk muscles may be an overlooked region of deficits following lower-limb amputation (LLA). This study sought to determine the extent that trunk muscle deficits are associated with physical function following amputation. Sedentary adults with a unilateral transtibial- (n = 25) or transfemoral-level (n = 14) amputation were recruited for this cross-sectional research study. Participants underwent a clinical examination that included ultrasound imaging of the lumbar multifidi muscles, the modified Biering-Sorensen Endurance Test (mBSET), and performance-based measures, that is, the Timed Up and

Effects of tiered cardiac rehabilitation on CRP, TNF-α, and physical endurance in older adults with coronary heart disease.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a highly prevalent disease in the elderly population, with atherosclerosis as its pathology, which can also be viewed as a chronic inflammatory response of the organism. Regular moderate-intensity exercise can direct the immune response toward an anti-inflammatory state, which is beneficial for improving the health and exercise tolerance. In cardiac rehabilitation, attention to the management of inflammatory factors as well as the improvement of exercise endurance is beneficial for the rehabilitation of elderly patients with coronary artery disease. This study i

Iron Deficiency without Anemia Decreases Physical Endurance and Mitochondrial Complex I Activity of Oxidative Skeletal Muscle in the Mouse.

Iron deficiency (ID), with or without anemia, is responsible for physical fatigue. This effect may be linked to an alteration of mitochondrial metabolism. Our aim was to assess the impact of ID on skeletal striated muscle mitochondrial metabolism. Iron-deficient non-anemic mice, obtained using a bloodletting followed by a low-iron diet for three weeks, were compared to control mice. Endurance was assessed using a one-hour submaximal exercise on a Rotarod device and activities of mitochondrial complexes I and IV were measured by spectrophotometry on two types of skeletal striated muscles, the s

The South African Defence Force physical training programme. Part I. Effect of 1 year's military training on endurance fitness.

The effect of the South African Defence Force's (SADF) military training on the endurance fitness of recruits was investigated. Pre-military training maximal O2 consumption (53,14 ml/kg/min) did not change significantly during the study. In contrast, lactate turnpoint (ml O2/kg/min) and treadmill performance time were moderately enhanced (7,5% and 8% respectively; P less than 0,05) by the initial 10-week basic training programme. Further analysis of the results showed this endurance-training effect to be limited to recruits of average and, in particular, below-average fitness. The salutary eff

Patterning of midlife marital trajectories in enduring marriages in a dyadic context: Physical and mental health outcomes in later years.

The current study, using prospective data over 25 years (1991-2015; N = 245 couples), investigates life course dyadic patterns of positive and negative marital trajectories (i.e., marital strength and strain, respectively) in middle-aged husbands and wives and an array of physical and mental health outcomes associated with these patterns. Spousal warmth, spouse's constructive conflict resolution, and couple's joint participation were used as indicators of marital strength, whereas spousal hostility, spouse's destructive conflict resolution, and marital instability were used as indicators of ma

Helping a child with multiple disabilities endure a demanding physical posture through self-managed access to preferred stimuli.

This study assessed whether a child with multiple disabilities would endure a difficult (standing) position more easily if allowed to access preferred stimuli while in that position. The study included an ABAB sequence with 2- and 3-mo. postintervention checks. Data showed that self-managed access to preferred stimuli during the B phases of the study and the postintervention checks reduced the child's indices of unhappiness, frowning and crying, while increasing his object contact and smiles as indices of happiness.

Aerobic exercise improve physical endurance and muscle function by ameliorating oxidative stress and modulating mitochondrial dynamics in aged skeletal muscle.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with the age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass and strength. Aerobic exercise upregulate Sestrins protein expression in skeletal muscle, which plays a key role in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis. This study aimed to elucidate the role of aerobic exercise in regulating mitochondrial dynamics and oxidative stress in aging skeletal muscle. We randomly assigned male C57BL/6J mice into four groups: Young Control Group (YC), Young Aerobic Exercise Group (YA), Old Control Group (OC) and Old Aerobic Exercise Group (OA). We confirmed that aerobic exer

Soft-Shelled Turtle Peptide Supplementation Modifies Energy Metabolism and Oxidative Stress, Enhances Exercise Endurance, and Decreases Physical Fatigue in Mice.

The potential of soft-shelled turtle peptides (STP) against fatigue was evaluated. Mice orally supplemented with STP significantly increased the swimming time until tiredness by 35.4-57.1%. Although not statistically significant, STP increased muscle and thymus mass. In addition, the serum lactate, ammonia, blood urea nitrogen content and creatine kinase activity in STP-fed mice were dramatically decreased when compared to the control group. Furthermore, STP supplementation increased the reserves of liver glycogen and muscle glycogen, thus improved the energy metabolism system of mice. STP tre
