The relationship between mitochondrial function and walking performance in older adults with a wide range of physical function.

BACKGROUND: Age related declines in walking performance may be partly attributable to skeletal muscle mitochondrial dysfunction as mitochondria produce over 90% of ATP needed for movement and the capacity for oxidative phosphorylation decreases with age. METHODS: Participants were from two studies: an ancillary to the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) Study (n=33), which recruited lower functioning participants (Short Physical Performance Battery [SPPB], 7.8±1.2), and the Study of Energy and Aging-Pilot (SEA, n=29), which enrolled higher functioning (SPPB, 10.8±1.4).

Functional Improvements Utilizing the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) in the Elderly after Epidural Steroid Injections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The treatment of debilitating pain and loss of function secondary to lumbar stenosis is in high demand with the aging patient population. Options, including epidural steroid injections (ESIs) and medication therapy, are limited and it is unclear if they provide any functional improvements. In this prospective study, we evaluate functional outcomes in older adults with symptomatic lumbar stenosis treated with ESIs compared to those managed with medications by introducing the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Our study was IRB-approved and included 16 patients, 68 to

Pulmonary function and physical performance in adolescent e-cigarette users: a narrative review.

Adolescent e-cigarette use has risen sharply worldwide and poses emerging threats to respiratory health. As adolescence represents a critical window for lung growth and aerobic capacity, inhalation of toxicants during this period may disrupt pulmonary development and exercise performance. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the physiological and behavioral consequences of vaping in youth. Clinical and epidemiological studies indicate that adolescents who vape report higher rates of respiratory symptoms, such as chronic cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath, and may exhibit

The Ankylosing Spondylitis Performance Index: Reliability and Feasibility of an Objective Test for Physical Functioning.

OBJECTIVE: Physical function in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is currently evaluated through questionnaires. The Ankylosing Spondylitis Performance Index (ASPI) is a performance-based measure for physical functioning, which has been validated in Dutch patients with radiographic (r-) axSpA. The interrater reliability has not yet been determined. To our knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate the validity, reliability, and feasibility of the ASPI in another patient population, including both r- and nonradiographic (nr-) axSpA patients. METHODS: Patients with axSpA were re

Performance-based versus patient-reported physical function: what are the underlying predictors?

BACKGROUND: Functional limitations have been operationally defined for studies of rehabilitation science through measures of physical performance and patient-reported function. Although conceived as representing similar concepts, differences between these 2 modes of measuring physical functioning have not been adequately characterized scientifically. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) with the function component of the Late-Life Function and Disability Instrument (LLFDI) with respect to their association with physiologic factors a
