BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to describe physical therapists' knowledge regarding battered women and to determine whether physical therapists recognize these patients in clinical settings.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Two hundred questionnaires were distributed to outpatient physical therapists in northern California. One hundred fifty-one usable questionnaires (76%) were returned.
RESULTS: Although 43% of the respondents reported treating a patient they identified or strongly suspected as having been battered, only two respondents (1%) reported they routinely asked patie

BACKGROUND: Advancing physical therapy interventions for children and young people is a high research priority. This includes research to describe and specify the control condition, typically 'current care', for effectiveness trials. This paper aims to identify physical therapy outcomes commonly targeted, and intervention techniques and approaches commonly used, by physiotherapists working with children (aged 2-19 years) with mobility limitations in the United Kingdom.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey. Participants were recruited through the interactive Chartered Society of Physiotherapy mem

INTRODUCTION: The Burley Readiness Examination (BRE) for Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging Competency assesses physical therapists' baseline MSK imaging competency. Establishing its reliability is essential to its value in determining MSK imaging competency. The purpose of this study was to test the reliability of the BRE for MSK Imaging Competency among physical therapists (PTs) with varying levels of training and education.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE: Previous literature supports PTs' utility concerning diagnostic imaging; however, no studies directly measure their competency. With PTs expanding thei

Mechanotransduction is the physiological process where cells sense and respond to mechanical loads. This paper reclaims the term "mechanotherapy" and presents the current scientific knowledge underpinning how load may be used therapeutically to stimulate tissue repair and remodelling in tendon, muscle, cartilage and bone. The purpose of this short article is to answer a frequently asked question "How precisely does exercise promote tissue healing?" This is a fundamental question for clinicians who prescribe exercise for tendinopathies, muscle tears, non-inflammatory arthropathies and even cont

BACKGROUND: Today we are faced with changes in society and healthcare needs resulting from demographic transition. Among many other developments, the increasing complexity of healthcare creates new requirements for health professionals. To meet these requirements, such as evidence-based practice, professionally experienced therapists need additional training courses to acquire scientific competencies in addition to their professional competence. Certification courses for practitioners in the fields of speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy offer a way to achieve these scient

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Imposter phenomenon (IP), or perceived fraudulence, describes an ongoing fear of exposure as a fraud or imposter, despite objective successes and accomplishments. Although there is a growing interest of IP in medicine, IP in the physical therapy profession has been minimally examined. We aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of IP among licensed physical therapists in the United States.
METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study utilized an online survey to assess levels of IP using the Clance Imposter Phenomenon Scale. We assessed degrees of emotional e

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Individuals with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are frequently referred to physical therapy for management, but little is known on how reliable therapists are at diagnosing BPPV. The purpose of the study was to examine the agreement between physical therapists in identifying nystagmus and diagnosing BPPV.
METHODS: Thirty-eight individuals with complaints of positional vertigo, 19 from each of 2 clinics (clinics 1 and 2) that specialize in vestibular rehabilitation, had eye movements recorded using video goggles during positioning tests including supine-to-

UNLABELLED: The inducibility of a graph represents its maximum density as an induced subgraph over all possible sequences of graphs of size growing to infinity. This invariant of graphs has been extensively studied since its introduction in 1975 by Pippenger and Golumbic. In 2017, Czabarka, Székely and Wagner extended this notion to leaf-labeled rooted binary trees, which are objects widely studied in the field of phylogenetics. They obtain the first results and bounds for the densities and inducibilities of such trees. Following up on their work, we apply Razborov's flag algebra theory to thi

Patient autonomy has long been considered a foundational principle in biomedical ethics and has been defined, in its most basic form, as a right to self-governance or self-determination. The emphasis that is placed on patient autonomy results in a necessary attention to a patient's values, expressed wishes, and decision making in a medical context. However, in an era of healthcare consumerism, where healthcare may be treated like any other good, the line between patient-centered care and patient-directed care becomes blurred, potentially resulting in a mindset that the patient (as a consumer)

Currently, there is a need for a review of the literature on ballet injury as it pertains to the physical therapist. Relatively few articles have reviewed ballet injury prevalence and mechanisms of injury. The purpose of this paper was to provide a thorough literature review of the prevalence of ballet injury and mechanisms of injury. Environmental factors and footwear relating to ballet injury were also reviewed. The literature indicated that 65-80% of ballet injuries are in the lower extremity, 10-17% occur in the vertebral column, and most of the remaining percentage are upper limb injuries

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mechanical hip pain and disease-based hip pain can have similar signs and symptoms, thereby presenting a differential diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Hip pain is a common complaint addressed by physical therapists; therefore, it would be advantageous for them to be knowledgeable about differential diagnosis for hip pain, so that they can screen for possible serious conditions outside the realm of physical therapist practice and make the appropriate referral.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) primarily occurs between 10 and 20 years of age. Adult patients (>20 years) tend to respond poorly to nonsurgical management. This case report describes the physical therapist management of an adult with OCD at the tibiofemoral joint.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 24-year-old woman had insidious onset of right knee pain. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the diagnosis of OCD. Interventions included iontophoresis, strengthening exercises, and instruction in strategies to minimize loading across the knee.
OUTCOME: The patient received 5 interven
