Integrating cancer rehabilitation into medical care at a cancer hospital.

In spite of national health care legislative and model program initiatives, cancer rehabilitation has not kept pace with rehabilitation for patients with other medical problems. This article discusses, from a historical perspective, unsuccessful health care legislation related to cancer and problems in establishing and expanding cancer rehabilitation programs. The attempts to establish a cancer rehabilitation program at the Texas Medical Center and the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center are reviewed. Lessons learned over past 40 years and strategies for maintaining the success of

[Motor rehabilitation in the aged. Clinical evaluation of the physiokinesis therapy department at a geriatric division for acute diseases].

Physiokinesitherapeutic results obtained in a geriatrics division showed that aged subjects with motor is injuries have the same chance of recovery as those in middle age. The time required for each stage and the overall duration of treatment are more or less the same. No special technological differences are involved, though close psychological training is necessary, and encouragement of the open brain-environment system may useful. Restrictions, though hardly even contraindications, may be encountered in the form of other infirmities more commonly associated with age. It is clear, therefore,

Making strides in preventing ICU-acquired weakness: involving family in early progressive mobility.

As advances in research and technology expand our ability to optimize the short-term outcomes in critical illness, survivors are often left with long-term functional impairments. The complications of bed rest can be nearly as devastating as the illness itself. Prolonged periods of immobility during the acute phase of illness have been linked to severe weakness, self-care deficits, poor quality of life, and mortality in patients up to 5 years after discharge from the intensive care unit. Interventions targeted at early, progressive mobility have been shown to reduce the burden of these outcomes

Bird T. Baldwin: a holistic scientist in occupational therapy's history.

Holistic patient care and the scientific research method are two important aspects of occupational therapy. Bird T. Baldwin contributed to the formulation of these tenets at the beginning of this century. Baldwin, a psychologist by training, became the director of the occupational therapy department at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, DC, during World War I. In his department, functional rehabilitation was achieved via scientifically analyzed purposeful activities. He believed that purposeful activity was superior to exercise. Activity choice was based on physical, vocational, socia

Physical Therapist Assessed Initial Lower Back Pain: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Treatment of patients with low back pain (LBP) amenable to improvement through physical therapy usually follows one of two pathways. The first is primary-care provider and nursing evaluation, often with imaging, pain medication, and a frequently delayed physical therapy referral. The second is a multi-disciplinary approach of embedding a physical therapist to assist with evaluations and active physical therapy treatment as early as possible. The present study compares the results of the first instance of LBP for the traditional pathway to the early physical therapy pathway for patients of the

Perspectives of older adults regarding barriers and enablers to engaging in fall prevention activities after hospital discharge.

Older adults recently discharged from hospital are at high risk of functional decline and falls. A tailored fall prevention education provided at hospital discharge aimed to improve the capacity of older adults to engage in falls prevention activities. What remains unknown are the factors affecting behaviour change after hospital discharge. This study identified the perceived barriers and enablers of older adults to engagement in fall prevention activities during the 6-month period post-discharge. An exploratory approach using interpretative phenomenological analysis focused on the lived exper

Physical therapy and non-surgical manual disc reduction combined with anterior repositioning splint for acute disc displacement without reduction of the temporomandibular joint in adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Current studies on the treatment of adolescent patients with disc displacement without reduction (DDWOR) are limited by short follow-up periods and small sample sizes, and there are few comparative studies on the efficacy of conservative treatment with and without disc reduction for acute DDWOR. This study compared the therapeutic effects of two conservative treatment methods: physical therapy alone and physical therapy combined with non-surgical manual disc reduction and anterior repositioning splints (ARS), in adolescent patients with acute DDWOR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This ret

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life and accessing rehabilitation services among patients with spinal cord injury and their fear of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The unanticipated coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had a negative effect on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and made significant changes in their daily routine. Patients with SCI face additional health risks, especially mental, behavioral, and physical. Without regular physiotherapy sessions, patients' psychological and functional abilities can deteriorate, and complications can occur. There is little information available about the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of life of patients with SCI, and their access to rehabilitation services during th

Torticollis: a long-term follow-up study.

To achieve better guidelines for the future management of torticollis, this study analyzed surgical and nonsurgical management of 253 torticollis patients who were treated in this hospital from 1971 to 1993. Of those, 37 cases received operation only, 78 cases were operated after failed physical therapy, and 138 cases were treated only at the Rehabilitation Department. If free neck movement was considered to be the primary goal of treatment, most parents were satisfied with the results. However, if facial and skull deformities were the serious sequelae of torticollis, then only less than half

Discharge videotaping: a means of augmenting occupational and physical therapy.

Regional burn centers commonly receive patients from medical facilities that are geographically distant. Logistic problems that may hamper follow-up care in the burn center can lead to a decrease in function as a result of contractures and hypertrophic scar formation. Inexperience on the part of therapists at community facilities serves to intensify this problem. Discharge videotaping, with respect to physical and occupational therapy programs, is a means of documenting range of motion at the time of discharge and providing visual documentation of the therapy program to be followed on an outpa

A critical evaluation of bronchial hygiene in pediatric pulmonary disease.

The variables inherent in analyzing the effectiveness of modalities used to achieve bronchial hygiene are numerous. Treatments may be given in a variety of settings, including intensive-care units, pediatric wards, respiratiory therapy departments, physical therapy departments, chronic-care hospitals, special education centers, and patient homes. Treatments are administered by a variety of medical professionals, allied health personnel, and lay volunteers. Motivation of the care providers as well as of the patients may vary greatly. Also, efforts are needed to study patients at comparable stag
