Beginning with the end in mind: evaluating outcomes of cultural competence instruction in a doctor of physical therapy programme.

The education of physical therapists must prepare them for autonomous practice providing culturally appropriate care. Models are available to guide curricular changes for cultural competence but little is available on methods to assess the outcomes. This article describes two methods to measure outcomes of cultural competence instruction in physical therapy education. These methods are the integrated standardised patient examination (ISPE) and a refugee screening program. These outcomes will determine how cultural curricular changes will drive student learning. The ISPE assesses cultural compe

Improving First Time Board Pass Rates: A Successful Model for Physical Therapy Programs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Success on the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) is crucial for physical therapist (PT) students and their programs. Despite recognizing the importance of NPTE preparation, many programs struggle with pass rates and lack effective remediation strategies. METHOD MODEL DESCRIPTION AND EVALUATION: This article describes the iterative process of a DPT program in the Midwest aimed at improving student pass rates on the NPTE and remediating students of not passing the NPTE the first time. Interventions included the following: changing the program's culture, develo

A Core Head, Neck, and Neuroanatomy Syllabus for Physical Therapy Student Education.

Head, neck, and neuroanatomy are essential components of physical therapy education due to their broad clinical applications. Detailed syllabi exist for medical students, yet none have been developed for physical therapy. This study aimed to produce an International Federation of Associations of Anatomists core head, neck, and neuroanatomy syllabus specifically for physical therapy students. A Delphi panel of 45 anatomists and clinicians from 18 countries reviewed 978 head, neck, and neuroanatomy items across five sections: general nervous system; bones and muscles of the head and neck; nasal

The use of positive pressure devices by physiotherapists.

The aim of this paper is to review the indications for use by physiotherapists, such as physiological rationale and the comparative efficacy of intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). A brief discussion of nasal intermittent positive airway pressure is also included. The use of IPPB for post operative prophylaxis has not been supported in the literature. In patients with low lung volumes resulting from neuromuscular disease or spinal injury, IPPB may be useful in the acute phase to improve tidal volume and cough effectiveness. The physiol

Training physiotherapy students in basic wheelchair provision. Experiences at two universities in Colombia.

Wheelchair provision training is essential to overcome barriers related to the lack of knowledge of health professionals on this topic. Appropriate knowledge of the service provision process may lead to higher quality service and products, and thus be more likely to help people with mobility impairments achieve the fundamental human right of personal mobility. This study aimed to describe a training intervention for two groups of future physiotherapists in Colombia, assess cohort differences in performance on a knowledge test, and explore their post-training perceptions. A quantitative retrosp

A report on disability and rehabilitation medicine in Pakistan: past, present, and future directions.

Disability is a stigma in Pakistan, and cultural norms are a hindrance to the integration of the disabled into the community. Additional barriers to addressing the needs of the disabled include the lack of reliable disability epidemiologic data, inadequate funding and poor health care infrastructure, and workforce shortages. The aim of this report is to present an overview of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) in Pakistan, covering its origins, current status, and future directions. An electronic literature search (1950-2009) was conducted using the Medline, ScienceDirect, Springer Li

Narrative histories of physiotherapy in Colombia, Ecuador, and Argentina.

BACKGROUND: The history of physiotherapy in Latin America has received little attention thus far in the English-speaking literature. In this paper, we draw on narratives from activists, educators, and professional leaders who have been instrumental in shaping the development of physiotherapy in Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador. Physiotherapists in the Latin American countries faced many similar challenges, including developing physiotherapy in the shadow of medicine, overcoming conservative attitudes toward women professionals, and frequent social upheaval. AIMS: The paper explores the disput

Curricular integration of a 4-year simulation-based education program on clinical reasoning for physiotherapy students: a descriptive design and implementation report.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based education remains underutilized in physiotherapy and is often limited to isolated experiences rather than longitudinal and systematically integrated approaches with a specific curriculum. This restricts its potential to foster clinical reasoning (CR)-a core competence for diagnosis and treatment planning. This study presents the design and implementation report of a four-year, simulation-based education program (SBEP) focused on CR. METHODS: This study reports the design, implementation and iterative refinement of a four-year SBEP using instructional and quality-i
