Sleep bruxism and associated physiological events in children with obstructive sleep apnea: a polysomnographic study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological events associated with sleep bruxism (Sleep Bruxism [SB]; presence of mandibular movement activity) and the control window (4 minutes prior to SB event, where no mandibular movement activity was detected) in a polysomnography study in children with mild sleep apnea. METHODS: Polysomnography data from children aged 4 to 9 years old diagnosed with mild sleep apnea were analyzed by 2 trained examiners. The mandibular movement activity (bruxism event; SB) was classified into phasic and tonic. The control window was selected

Nutritional Surveillance for the Best Start in Life, Promoting Health for Neonates, Infants and Children.

This Special Issue aims to examine the crucial role of nutritional status starting from pregnancy in modulating fetal, neonatal and infant growth and metabolic pathways, with potential long-term impacts on adult health. Poor maternal nutritional conditions in the earliest stages of life during fetal development and early life may induce both short-term and longer lasting effects; in particular, an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and other chronic diseases such as obesity, which itself is a major risk factor for NCDs, is observed over the lifespan. Poor maternal nutrition affe

[Viral genesis and autoimmunity of chronic hepatitis. Suggestion for a dynamically descriptive nomenclature without verification of etiology].

Today, viruses and autoimmunity phenomena are at the focus of interest in chronic hepatitis, not least with respect to the differing treatments, e.g. with interferon and immunosuppressants. Unfortunately, the last international nomenclature fails to take adequate account of the various forms of chronic hepatitis, of the fact that autoimmunity phenomena are predominantly physiological and also occur in the case of viral hepatitides, and also that the cause of autoimmune hepatitis is not clear. If we wish to avoid errors, we should employ a descriptive dynamic classification and not forget that

Transnasal cooling: a Pandora's box of transnasal patho-physiology.

The innovative concept of transnasal evaporative cooling for therapeutic hypothermia in cardio-pulmonary-cerebro-resuscitation has therapeutic implications with evidence of rapid and selective brain cooling; however, this author wants to elicit that this concept may hold answers for many physiological phenomena which have not been explored or completely understood up till now. To affirm the physiological role of transnasal cooling, the innovative non-invasive brain temperature monitoring can help the investigators to explore and understand the following transnasal pathophysiological phenomena:

Decoding the image: finding diagnostic signals in multi-modality abdominal artifacts.

Imaging artifacts and related physiologic, pathologic, and iatrogenic phenomena are common across every radiology modality and often provide useful diagnostic information. This pictorial essay introduces a structured, four-category framework for recognizing and interpreting abdominal artifacts and related phenomena (ARPs): (1) the "Virtual Biopsy," encompassing ARPs that aid in characterizing tissue composition and pathology; (2) the "Flowmeter," representing ARPs that provide insight into physiologic or pathologic flow states; (3) the "Signpost," describing ARPs that direct attention toward o

[Clinical analysis of paroxysmal motor phenomena in the neonate].

The newborn infant is prone to motor phenomena of various physiological mechanisms and pathological significance whereas they can share close clinical patterns. A detailed clinical analysis, that should be supported by a video EEG recording, is necessary. That may help to distinguish myoclonus, jitteriness or seizures. Some rare phenomenom such as hyperekplexia or myotonia have also to be known. The pregnancy and birth history, the clinical examination and the search for association of various motor phenomena give essential clues for the diagnosis. Plant electrical signals: From scattered observations to functional understanding.

Plants generate electrical signals in response to a wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses, and these signals are increasingly recognized as important mediators of stress perception, systemic communication, and defense activation. While slow wave potentials induced by mechanical wounding and herbivory are relatively well characterized, the mechanistic understanding of many other stress-induced electrical responses remains limited. Nevertheless, electrical signals often represent some of the earliest detectable physiological responses in plants, highlighting their potential for plant phenoty

Equid Nutritional Physiology and Behavior: An Evolutionary Perspective.

Like other members of the odd-toed ungulates (the perissodactyls), equids once had a higher species diversity in the fossil record than they have today. This is generally explained in comparison to the enormous diversity of bovid ruminants. Theories on putative competitive disadvantages of equids include the use of a single toe as opposed to two toes per leg, the lack of a specific brain cooling (and hence water-saving) mechanism, longer gestation periods that delay reproductive output, and in particular digestive physiology. To date, there is no empirical support for the theory that equids fa

Skin steroidogenesis in health and disease.

The skin is an important extra-gonadal steroidogenic organ, capable of metabolizing various hormones from their precursors, as well as of synthesizing de novo a broad palette of sex steroids and glucocorticoids from cholesterol. In this manuscript, we review the major steroidogenic properties of human skin and we suggest steroidogenesis' impairment as a cardinal factor for various pathological conditions such as acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, and androgenic alopecia.

Role of dorsolateral periaqueductal grey in the coordinated regulation of cardiovascular and respiratory function.

The midbrain periaqueductal grey (PAG) contains four longitudinal columns, referred to as the dorsomedial (dmPAG), dorsolateral (dlPAG), lateral (lPAG) and ventrolateral (vlPAG) subdivisions, which collectively have a pivotal role in integrating behavioural and physiological responses to external stressors as well as other functions. This review is focussed on the dlPAG, which is believed to be an important component of the central mechanisms that generate the defensive response to acute psychological stressors, such as the presence of a predator or other immediate threat. The anatomical conne

Degradation System: Sialidase.

Sialidases are crucial enzymes responsible for the desialylation of gangliosides. In vertebrates, four sialidases-Neu1, Neu2, Neu3, and Neu4-exhibit distinct reactivity profiles toward gangliosides. This study aims to elucidate the physiological roles of ganglioside degradation mediated by these four sialidases, while also providing a comprehensive analysis of the methodologies employed to study their activity. By understanding the specific functions and analytical approaches associated with each sialidase, we can gain insight into their contributions to various physiological phenomena.

Bayesian brain in tinnitus: Computational modeling of three perceptual phenomena using a modified Hierarchical Gaussian Filter.

Recently, Bayesian brain-based models emerged as a possible composite of existing theories, providing an universal explanation of tinnitus phenomena. Yet, the involvement of multiple synergistic mechanisms complicates the identification of behavioral and physiological evidence. To overcome this, an empirically tested computational model could support the evaluation of theoretical hypotheses by intrinsically encompassing different mechanisms. The aim of this work was to develop a generative computational tinnitus perception model based on the Bayesian brain concept. The behavioral responses of
