BACKGROUND: Phytolacca tetramera is an endemic plant from Argentina that is currently at serious risk because its environment is subjected to a high anthropic impact. A previous study has shown that berry extracts obtained from this plant display antifungal activity against multiple human-pathogenic fungi when tested with a non-standardized method. Further evidences of the antifungal properties of other parts of the plant and studies of mechanism of antifungal action of the antifungal chemically characterized extracts are required.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to gain further evidence of the ant

BACKGROUND: The liver is a hub of metabolism and detoxification of substances. Since many redox reactions take place in the liver, it is prone to oxidative damage. Unlike conventional agents, botanicals act through several mechanisms in preventing oxidative damage. Among these Phytolacca dodecandra is the most commonly used agent in Ethiopian folk medicine.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of the 80% methanol extract of P. dodecandra root.
METHODS: Male mice were divided into six groups and treated accordingly. Negative control was given 2% Tween 80, toxican

The effect of endod berry extract against schistosome miracidia has been tested to determine the sensitivity of these organisms to the molluscicide and to see whether miracidia subjected to sublethal doses of the toxicant will be able to infect their specific host snails. Short contact (30 min) LC50 of endod extract with miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni was 8.2 parts per million (p.p.m.) (95% CL 5-13). However, exposure of S. haematobium to sublethal doses of 3 p.p.m. for 30 min or overnight in open air ponds reduced their infectivity 3.5-5.6-fold when compared with controls. It is suggested t

Water pollution from industrial dyes and fruit spoilage due to microbes are significant global challenges. Solutions like photocatalytic degradation and preservation techniques are essential. Coating fruits with nanomaterials can reduce microbial contamination and extend shelf life, while these materials also provide alternatives against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The primary objective of this study was to synthesize zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) and copper-doped ZnO (Cu-ZnO) nanocomposites (NCs) using Phytolacca dodecandra root extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent, e

Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. (PR) is a saponin-rich medicinal plant associated with gastrointestinal toxicity, but the mechanisms underlying PR-induced intestinal barrier injury remain unclear. In this study, raw PR extract was analytically characterized by UPLC-ZenoTOF-MS/MS, confirming triterpenoid saponins as the predominant constituents. C57BL/6 J mice were orally exposed to characterized PR extract (1.20 or 12.0 g/kg for 5 h), and Caco-2 cells and mouse intestinal organoids were used to assess epithelial toxicity and barrier disruption. Histopathology, ELISA, FITC-dextran permeability assays,

The presence of glucosamine trisaccharides in the glycocalyx of surface epithelial cells of the endometrium of hyperstimulated pregnant rats was compared with that of normal pregnant animals by means of lectin-avidin-ferritin histochemistry. The lectin Phytolacca americana was used. A statistically significant reduction in ferritin particles and hence, glucosamine trisaccharides, was found in the glycocalyx of the hyperstimulated animals when compared with that of the controls. This reduction could contribute to the failure of implantation in hyperstimulated animals.

Esculentoside A (EsA) is a kind of triterpenoid saponins from the root tuber of Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. It has extensive medicinal activity, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immune regulation, and cell proliferation inhibition. However, some researches suggested that EsA can cause hepatotoxicity, whose mechanism is not precise. To ensure the safety and reliability in the clinical use of Phytolacca acinosa Roxb., it is necessary to establish a rapid and accurate method to evaluate the toxicity, analyze and verify the toxicity mechanism of EsA. Therefore, this research explored the mec
