Recently, plant essential oils (EOs) have attracted special attention in plant disease control and food preservation. Since ancient times, essential oils extracted from plants have exhibited many biological characteristics, especially antimicrobial properties. Recent studies have described the potentials of EOs and derivatives to inhibit the growth and reproduction of microorganisms, mainly in response of overwhelming concerns of consumers about food safety. In the context of returning to nature, with the advancement of science and technology and improved living standards, people have begun to

Phytophthora sojae poses a major threat to global soybean production. Here, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated promoter replacement revealed that the V-ATPase A subunit gene (PsVHA-A) plays an important role in the growth, development, and pathogenicity of P. sojae, highlighting its potential as a molecular target. Using this target, a multistage docking-based virtual screening identified compound A15 as a potent antioomycete inhibitor, with EC50 values of 4.082-8.974 μg/mL against six oomycetes. A15 markedly inhibited mycelial growth and key developmental stages in P. sojae in vitro and protected soybean l

Nitric oxide (NO), a pivotal redox signaling molecule, coordinates plant development and immune responses through S-nitrosylation-mediated protein modification. While NO-dependent S-nitrosylation fine-tunes immune responses, whether pathogens hijack this process to subvert plant immunity remains unclear. Here it is shown that S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR), which maintains NO homeostasis by degrading S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), positively regulates tomato resistance to Phytophthora capsici. Active-site mutations in GSNOR abolished its function in plant defense. Remarkably, GSNOR is ma

Phytophthora nicotianae is a destructive plant pathogen that causes significant agricultural losses, with current chemical control strategies leading to resistance and environmental concerns. This study identified thiolutin, a dithiopyrrolone antibiotic from Streptomyces luteireticuli ASG80, as a potent antifungal agent against multiple Phytophthora species. Thiolutin exhibited strong in vitro activity, with an EC50 value of 0.8266 μg/mL, significantly reduced disease incidence and Phytophthora abundance in vivo, outperforming conventional fungicides such as metalaxyl. Transcriptomic analysis

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivation is severely constrained by multiple pathogens, among which late blight caused by the oomycete P. infestans remains the most destructive disease. Developing pathogen-resistant cultivars can enhance productivity and reduce fungicide use in potato, where R-gene-based resistance is often overcome by evolving pathogen populations. Targeting susceptibility (S) genes represents a promising alternative strategy for improving disease resistance. Here, we employed CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing to introduce a targeted missense single-nucleotide polymorphism in the s

Late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans is considered as the most devastating disease of potato and is a re-emerging problem worldwide. Current late blight control practices rely mostly on synthetic fungicides or copper-based products, but growing awareness of the negative impact of these compounds on the environment has led to the search for alternative control measures. A collection of Pseudomonas strains isolated from both the rhizosphere and the phyllosphere of potato was recently characterized for in vitro protective effects against P. infestans. In the present study, we used a leaf

Tobacco is a model plant as well as an important economic crop. Black shank disease, caused by Phytophthora nicotianae, severely undermines tobacco yield and quality, yet the molecular basis of differential cultivar resistance remains incompletely understood. Here, we compared the resistant cultivar, 'Xiangyan 7' (X7) and the susceptible cultivar 'Honghuadajinyuan' (HD), after inoculation with P. nicotianae race 0. Disease evaluation showed that X7 had a significantly lower disease index than HD. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses were performed on leaves collected at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 1

The soil-borne oomycete Phytophthora sojae causes severe Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRR) in soybean. Rhizosphere metabolites, integral to plant defense, represent an underexplored resource for novel control strategies. A metabolomic comparison of rhizospheres from resistant (Williams82) and susceptible (Williams) soybeans identified gentisaldehyde as a key differential metabolite. In vitro, gentisaldehyde demonstrated broad, concentration-dependent inhibition of P. sojae, suppressing mycelial growth, oospore formation, oospore survival, zoosporangium formation, zoospore encystment, and cy

English walnut (Juglans regia) is a species that is highly valued for the quality of its wood and the nutritional and nutraceutical properties of its fruit. A severe dieback of J. regia trees was observed recently in orchards located in three geographically distinct areas of Tuscany, central Italy. Symptoms included root and collar rot, necrosis of the under-bark tissue, bleeding cankers, stunted growth, and crown dieback. Four Phytophthora species were obtained from 239 isolates found on symptomatic J. regia individuals. They were identified, on the basis of macro-morphological (colony shape

This research aimed to identify native biocontrol bacteria capable of suppressing Phytophthora infestans in potato crops. A total of forty bacterial strains were isolated from wheat (Triticum aestivum), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), potato (Solanum tuberosum), and cotton (Gossypium herbaceum) plants collected in Sibi, Pakistan. Out of these, ten isolates showed antagonistic effects against P. infestans, with inhibition percentages ranging from 27 to 62%. The isolate WL2.3 exhibited the strongest inhibition at 62%. Furthermore, sporangia germination tests, including those using cell-free super

Nonspecific lipidtransfer proteins (nsLTPs), which are small, cysteine-rich proteins, belong to the pathogenesis-related protein family, and several of them act as positive regulators during plant disease resistance. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of these proteins in plant immune responses are unclear. In this study, a typical nsLTP gene, StLTP10, was identified and functionally analysed in potato. StLTP10 expression was significantly induced by Phytophthora infestans, which causes late blight in potato, and defence-related phytohormones, including abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic

BACKGROUND: Phytophthora sojae, a soil-borne oomycete pathogen, has been a yield limiting factor for more than 60 years on soybean. The resurgence of P. sojae (Phytophthora sojae) is primarily ascribed to the durable oospores found in soil and remnants of the disease. P. sojae is capable of infesting at any growth periods of the soybean, and the succeed infestation of P. sojae is predominantly attributed to long-lived oospores present in soil. Comprehending the molecular mechanisms that drive oospores formation and their significance in infestation is the key for effective management of the di

Upon immune activation, chloroplasts switch off photosynthesis, produce antimicrobial compounds and associate with the nucleus through tubular extensions called stromules. Although it is well established that chloroplasts alter their position in response to light, little is known about the dynamics of chloroplast movement in response to pathogen attack. Here, we report that during infection with the Irish potato famine pathogen Phytophthora infestans, chloroplasts accumulate at the pathogen interface, associating with the specialized membrane that engulfs the pathogen haustorium. The chemical

Plants face many biotic and abiotic challenges in nature; one of them is attack by disease-causing microbes. Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of late blight is one of the most prominent pathogens of the potato responsible for multi-billion-dollar losses every year. We have previously reported that potato-associated Pseudomonas strains inhibited P. infestans at various developmental stages. A comparative genomics approach identified several factors putatively involved in this anti-oomycete activity, among which was the production of hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Here, we report the relative c

Phytophthora root rot, caused by several species of Phytophthora, is an important disease of citrus in California and other growing regions. For chemical management, mefenoxam and potassium phosphite have been available for many years, and resistance in Phytophthora spp. has been reported for both compounds. We evaluated the efficacy of the new Oomycota fungicides ethaboxam, fluopicolide, mandipropamid, and oxathiapiprolin, each with a different mode of action, against Phytophthora root rot of citrus in field and greenhouse studies. Phytophthora ramorum is a recently introduced pathogen in Europe and North America consisting of three clonal lineages. Due to the limited intralineage genetic variation, only a few polymorphic markers are available for use in studies involving the epidemiology and evolution of P. ramorum. A total of 159 primer pairs for candidate polymorphic SSR loci were tested with universal labeling. Four polymorphic microsatellite loci were identified within the NA1 lineage and one within the NA2 lineage, demonstrating the power and flexibility of the screening technique. The markers may significantly inc

The Phytophthora blight of Panax notoginseng, caused by Phytophthora cactorum, is a devastating oomycete disease. Biocontrol strategies hold immense potential for inhibiting the spread of P. cactorum. We isolated 72 actinobacteria from soil and screened their antagonistic activity against P. cactorum. Both strain J36 and its cell-free filtrate exhibited strong antagonistic activity against P. cactorum and were therefore selected. Based on the 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic tree, strain J36 formed a well supported subclade with Streptomyces zaomyceticus NRRL B-2038 (bootstrap value 100%). However,

Phytophthora cinnamomi is considered as one of the world's worst plant pathogens, infecting about 5,000 plant species including those of agricultural and environmental significance. Disease management is largely dependent on chemical control, particularly synthetic fungicides such as phosphonic acid-based fungicides, e.g., phosphite/potassium phosphonate. While phosphonic-acid-based fungicides have been highly effective for more than 40 years, their prolonged use has led to the development of tolerance and decreased sensitivity in P. cinnamomi. Novel control agents that are effective but envir

Botanicals are various plant-based products like plant extracts or essential oils. Anti-fungal activities of selected essential oils were tested on the pathogen causing potato and tomato late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Tests to evaluate anti-oomycete activities of commercial essential oils and their major compounds were carried out in vitro in microplate in liquid media. Anti-oomycete activities on Phytophthora infestans strain were obtained from essential oils/major compounds: Eucalyptus citriodora/citronellal; Syzygium aromaticum (clove)/eugenol; Mentha spicata/D-Carvone, L-Carvone; Or
