Marine algal viruses exhibit a high level of diversity, and closely related viruses targeting the same algal host species can stably coexist. Here we report an example of a single virus-host system concealing hidden complexity. We discovered two double stranded (ds) DNA viruses infecting the Arctic picophytoplankter Micromonas polaris coexisting in culture for over a decade. Genomic sequencing of the lysate originally characterized as MpoV-44T revealed that it comprises two distinct prasinoviruses with ~203-204 kb genomes (MpoV-44T.A and MpoV-44T.B), of which conserved regions only accounted f

Variable climatic conditions strongly influence phytoplankton dynamics in estuaries globally. Our study area is Chesapeake Bay, a highly productive ecosystem providing natural resources, transportation, and recreation for nearly 16 million people inhabiting a 165,000-km(2) watershed. Since World War II, nutrient over-enrichment has led to multiple ecosystem impairments caused by increased phytoplankton biomass as chlorophyll-a (chl-a). Doubled nitrogen (N) loadings from 1945-1980 led to increased chl-a, reduced water clarity, and low dissolved oxygen (DO), while decreased N loadings from 1981-

Phytoplankton abundance is inversely related to sea surface temperature (SST). However, a positive relationship is observed between SST and phytoplankton abundance in coastal waters of Bay of Bengal. This has led to an assertion that in a warming climate, rise in SST may increase phytoplankton blooms and, therefore, cholera outbreaks. Here, we explain why a positive SST-phytoplankton relationship exists in the Bay of Bengal and the implications of such a relationship on cholera dynamics. We found clear evidence of two independent physical drivers for phytoplankton abundance. The first one is t

As a result of human activity, Earth's atmosphere and climate are changing at an unprecedented pace. Models based on short-term experiments predict major changes will occur in marine phytoplankton communities in the future ocean, but rarely consider how evolution or interactions with other microbes may influence these changes. Here, we experimentally evolved several phytoplankton in coculture with a heterotrophic bacterium, Alteromonas sp. EZ55, under either present-day or predicted future pCO2 conditions. Growth rates of phytoplankton generally increased over time under both conditions, but o

Aquatic communities are increasingly subjected to multiple stressors through global change, including warming, pH shifts, and elevated nutrient concentrations. These stressors often surpass species tolerance range, leading to unpredictable consequences for aquatic communities and ecosystem functioning. Phytoplankton, as the foundation of the aquatic food web, play a crucial role in controlling water quality and the transfer of nutrients and energy to higher trophic levels. Despite the significance in understanding the effect of multiple stressors, further research is required to explore the co

We introduce an image cytometer (I-CYT) for the analysis of phytoplankton in fresh and marine water environments. A linear quantification of cell numbers was observed covering several orders of magnitude using cultures of Tetraselmis and Nannochloropsis measured by autofluorescence in a laboratory environment. We assessed the functionality of the system outside the laboratory by phytoplankton quantification of samples taken from a marine water environment (Dutch Wadden Sea, The Netherlands) and a fresh water environment (Lake Ijssel, The Netherlands). The I-CYT was also employed to study the e

The response of marine microalgal lipids to phosphorus is of central importance in phytoplankton ecology but remains poorly understood. We determined how taxonomically diverse microalgal species remodelled their lipid class profile in response to phosphorus availability and whether these changes coincided with those already known to occur in land plants and in the limited number of phytoplankton species for which data are available. The complete lipid class profile and specific lipid ratios influenced by phosphorus availability were quantified in two green microalgae and seven Chromalveolates

We explored the possible mechanisms leading to differential Cd sensitivity in three marine phytoplankton (the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum and the green alga Chlorella autotrophica) based on their Cd accumulation, Cd subcellular distribution, and phytochelatin (PC) synthesis. The most sensitive species, T. pseudonana, generally exhibited the highest Cd body burden and organelle (org)-Cd concentration. C. autotrophica, the most tolerant species to Cd, had the smallest org-Cd accumulation, as well as a much higher percentage of cellular debris-Cd, whic

Over the last 250 years, anthropogenic activity has increased atmospheric carbon dioxide by nearly 40%. This increase is mainly caused by human fossil fuel combustion and deforestation, which are the main causes of global warming. Phytoplankton of the world's oceans synthesizes half of the carbon dioxide of the total Earth's photosynthetic activity. Thus, phytoplankton plays a crucial role in controlling Earth's climate. To study this scenario, we propose and analyze a mathematical model for the carbon-phytoplankton-zooplankton interaction dynamics. Positivity, boundedness, existence, and stab

Compounds in sunscreen such as ultraviolet (UV) filters protect human skin from damage caused by UV radiation exposure. However, sunscreen components reach marine ecosystems after their release from human skin during activities such as swimming and washing, and are potentially toxic to marine organisms. TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) are commonly used as inorganic UV filters. In this study, we explored the effects of TiO2 and ZnO NPs on natural phytoplankton assemblages in coastal seawater. Growth rates of natural phytoplankton assemblages were significantly decreased by 10 mg L-1 TiO2 and 1

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are becoming an increasing problem to human health and environment (including effects on natural and cultured resources, tourism and ecosystems) all over the world. In Mexico a number of human fatalities and important economic losses have occurred in the last 30 years because of these events. There are about 70 species of planktonic and non-planktonic microalgae considered harmful in Mexican coasts. The most important toxin-producing species are the dinoflagellates Gymnodinium catenatum and Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum, in the Mexican Pacific, and Karenia br

The rice-crayfish integrated system (RCIS) has expanded rapidly across China, yet its ecological impacts on phytoplankton remain inadequately understood. To fill this gap, we conducted a 40-d field experiment with five crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) stocking densities (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 ind./m2; CK, T1-T4) in replicated paddy plots. Water samples were collected weekly, and phytoplankton were identified and enumerated under light microscopy. Community structure, diversity indices (Margalef, Pielou, and Shannon-Wiener), co-occurrence networks, neutral community model (NCM), and Spearman correlat

Saharan dust aerosols are increasingly transported and deposited into Mediterranean ecosystems, with dust events doubling in recent decades. While dust supplies nutrients, it also limits light available to phytoplankton, with significant impacts on aquatic communities. Its interaction with other stressors, particularly temperature fluctuations, remains unclear but may impair phytoplankton growth, and trigger protective stress responses. The short, mid, and long-term interactive effects of dust deposition (five levels, 0-320 mg/L) and temperature (three levels, TC: control; TCH: constant high;

Phytoplankton are photosynthetic microorganisms in aquatic environments that produce many bioactive substances. However, some of them are toxic to aquatic organisms via filter-feeding and are even poisonous to humans through the food chain. Human poisoning from these substances and their serious long-term consequences have resulted in several health threats, including cancer, skin disorders, and other diseases, which have been frequently documented. Seafood poisoning disorders triggered by phytoplankton toxins include paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP), a

Vibrio cholerae is a ubiquitously distributed human pathogen that naturally inhabits marine and estuarine ecosystems. Two serogroups are responsible for causing cholera epidemics, O1 and O139, but several non-O1 and non-O139 V. cholerae (NOVC) strains can induce cholera-like infections. Outbreaks of V. cholerae have previously been correlated with phytoplankton blooms; however, links to specific phytoplankton species have not been resolved. Here, the growth of a NOVC strain (S24) was measured in the presence of different phytoplankton species, alongside phytoplankton abundance and concentratio

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have elicited increasing concern due to their ubiquitous occurrence in coastal marine environments and resultant toxicity in organisms. Due to their lipophilic nature, PAHs tend to accumulate in phytoplankton cells and thus subsequently transfer to other compartments of the marine ecosystem. The intrinsic fluorescence properties of PAHs in the ultraviolet (UV)/blue spectral range have recently been exploited to investigate their uptake modes, localization, and aggregation in various biological tissues. Here, we quantitatively evaluate the sorption of two

Shrinking of body size has been proposed as one of the universal responses of organisms to global climate warming. Using phytoplankton as an experimental model system has supported the negative effect of warming on body-size, but it remains controversial whether the size reduction under increasing temperatures is a direct temperature effect or an indirect effect mediated over changes in size selective grazing or enhanced nutrient limitation which should favor smaller cell-sizes. Here we present an experiment with a factorial combination of temperature and nutrient stress which shows that most

The acute toxicity of sulfonylurea herbicides bensulfuron-methyl and cinosulfuron was tested on the five species of freshwater phytoplankton: Scenedesmus acutus, Scenedesmus subspicatus, Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella saccharophila. Herbicide concentrations eliciting a 50% growth reduction over 96 h (EC50) ranged from 8 to 104 mg/l for cinosulfuron and from 0.015 to 6.2 mg/l for bensulfuron-methyl. The pesticides bensulfuron-methyl, atrazine and benthiocarb were more toxic than cinosulfuron, chlorsulfuron, molinate, fenitrothion and pyridaphenthion in a toxicity study with the same algal spe

The acute toxicity of the insecticide fenitrothion was measured using four freshwater algae (Chlorella saccharophila, Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus acutus, and Scenedesmus subspicatus) and one cyanobacteria (Pseudanabaena galeata). Insecticide concentrations eliciting 50% growth reduction over 96 hr (EC50) ranged from 0.84 to 11.9 mg/L. Fenitrothion was more toxic than other pesticides studied with the same algal species such as chlorsulfuron, molinate, and pyridaphenthion. The transformation of effective concentrations of fenitrothion and other pesticides obtained from toxicity measurements

The effect of light and dark on growth, DNA replication and cell division of two marine phytoplankters Thalassiosira weissflogii (a diatom) and Hymenomonas carterae (a coccolithophorid) was investigated using flow cytometry. The two species displayed very differing behavior. When transferred from light to prolonged darkness, all coccolithophorid cells were arrested at the beginning of the G1 stage of the cell cycle. When shifted back into light, they resumed cycling at a rate slightly slower than prior to arrest. In contrast, diatom cells were arrested either in the G1 or G2 stage of the cell
