BACKGROUND: Pilomatrixoma is a benign skin tumour often presenting as a firm irregular mass in the paediatric population. The most common site is on the head and neck. This case report discusses a 12-year-old West Highland White Terrier presented to the veterinary clinic with reverse sneezing and oral dysphagia. Pilomatrixoma is a follicular benign tumor of unknown etiology that originates in the matrix of a hair follicle. INTRODUCTION: Pilomatrixoma is a relatively rare, benign tumor arising from the hair root matrix. It is found frequently on the head and neck, with most involving the eyebrow in the periocular region. In contrast, eyelid pilomatrixoma is less common, and often clinically misdiagnosed. Here, we present clinical and histological data from 19 pilomatrixomas arising in the eyelid.

PURPOSE: To review the clinical features of pilomatrixomas of the eyelids and eyebrows in children and adolescents.
METHODS: The authors reviewed the medical records of 95 patients, all of whom were 20 years old or younger and had the histopathologic diagnosis of pilomatrixoma made from 1976 through 1995. Special attention was given to that subgroup of patients with tumors involving the eyelids and eyebrows. Calcifying epitheliomas of Malherbe (pilomatrixomas) are benign calcifying tumours that arise from the hair matrix and present as a slow-growing dermal or subcutaneous mass most commonly located in the head and neck. A 41-year-old woman presented with a rapidly growing mass on her upper left eyelid that had first appeared 3 months earlier. The mass was dark red in color, alternating with whitish pseudocyst formations, and measured 3 cm long with a 1-cm base presenting. A 51-year-old man presented with a three-month history of a red and painful right eye. A corneal ulcer was diagnosed, and laboratory workup failed to disclose an etiologic factor. A white tumor, with an irregular and calcified surface, found in the superior tarsal conjunctiva, was considered to be the cause of the corneal ulcer. Pilomatrixoma is a rare, benign, circumscribed, calcifying epithelial neoplasm that is derived from hair matrix cells. Multiple pilomatrixomas are uncommon. We describe a case of multiple pilomatrixomas in a 23-year-old black woman who presented with lesions on her face and back. Based on the results of the clinical examination, she was provisionally diagnosed with either calcified sebaceous cysts or calcified lymph nodes. She underwent surgical excision of the masses. BACKGROUND: Pilomatrixoma (PMX) is a relatively uncommon benign cutaneous neoplasm arising from skin adnexa. It presents as a subcutaneous asymptomatic nodule mostly in the head and neck region and is frequently misdiagnosed by the clinicians. Pilomatrixoma is a benign adnexal skin tumor involving the hair follicle matrix. It is found in children, predominantly involving the face. We report here an interesting and rare case of a 52-year-old male presenting with a large, firm, and painless mass over the scrotum considered to be a sebaceous cyst. The mass was completely excised and a biopsy report revealed it to be a pilomatrixoma of the scrotum. The patient recovered well postoperatively with no recurrence over two years.
