A Combined Turmeric and Allspice Supplement Improves Metabolic Health in Obese Rats by Reducing Carbohydrate and Lipid Absorption.

The objective of this study is to assess the impact of a combined turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and allspice (Pimenta dioica L. Merril) supplement (TAS), on obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance through inhibition of carbohydrate and lipid absorption. In vitro assessments demonstrated that TAS inhibits key enzymes implicated in the carbohydrate and lipid absorption. Oral starch and lipid tolerance tests showed that combined supplement reduced lipid (∼47% TAS) and carbohydrate absorption (∼33%) compared to the negative control. In a 36-week diet-induced obesity mode

Natural essential oil mix of sweet orange peel, cumin, and allspice elicits anti-inflammatory activity and pharmacological safety similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

An inflammation response occurs when the body reacts to exogenous and endo enous noxious stimuli, and it helps the body respond to infection and repair tissues, adapt to stress, and remove dead or damaged cells. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are traditionally used to treat inflammation; however, these drugs often cause negative side effects. For this reason, developing and establishing effective alternative medicines for treating many chronic diseases with underlying inflammation is critically dependent on the identification of new organic molecules and

Anxiolytic Potential of Selected Essential Oils and Their Impact on Motor Function.

Plant essential oils (EOs) exhibit promising anxiolytic activity, but their application may be constrained by adverse motor effects arising from interactions with neural circuits controlling movement. Here, we investigated the anxiolytic-like effects and motor impairment liability of EOs from Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus, Melissa officinalis, Matricaria chamomilla, Lippia alba, Salvia rosmarinus, Ocimum basilicum, Spiranthera odoratissima, and Cymbopogon citratus, integrating computational target prediction with behavioral pharmacology. Prioritized EO constituents were subjected to target predic

Single Position Prone Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Review of the Current Literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Spinal fusion, vital for treating various spinal disorders, has evolved since the introduction of the minimally invasive Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (LLIF) by Pimenta in 2001. Traditionally performed in the lateral decubitus position, LLIF faces challenges such as intraoperative repositioning, neurological complications, and lack of access to lower lumbar levels. These challenges lead to long surgery times, increased rates of perioperative complications, and increased costs. The more recently popularized prone lateral approach mitigates these issues primarily by eliminat

L4-L5 anatomy classification system for lateral lumbar interbody fusion.

Lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF), developed by Dr. Luiz Pimenta in 2006, allows access to the spinal column through the psoas major muscle. The technique has many advantages, such as reduced bone and muscular tissue damage, indirect decompression, larger implants, and lordosis correction capabilities. However, this technique also has drawbacks, with the most notorious being the risk of spinal pathologies due to indirect injury of the lumbar plexus, but with low rates of persistent injuries. Therefore, several groups have proposed classifications to help identify patients at a greater ris

Comparative Morphology and Redescription of Pleurobranchus Species (Gastropoda, Pleurobranchoidea) from Brazil.

Juliana Alvim and Alexandre Dias Pimenta (2016) The taxonomy of Pleurobranchus from Brazil is little known because the internal anatomy and possible intraspecific variation are poorly understood. This study recognizes three valid species from Brazil: Pleurobranchus areolatus Mörch, 1863, P. iouspi Ev. Marcus, 1984 and P. reticulatus Rang, 1832. Pleurobranchus reticulatus and P. areolatus were misidentified for a long time because of their simple descriptions, without photographs of living animals. However, they are distinguished by: color of the rhinophores, P. reticulatus has a uniform color,
