Short-term effects of running exercise on pinch strength, grip strength, and manual dexterity of the dominant and non-dominant hands.

Occupations including first responders and military require manual tasks; therefore changes in hand strength and dexterity could affect performance. We hypothesised that pinch strength, grip strength, and dexterity will change after unloaded and loaded exercise. Twenty-four male (25 ± 4.0 yrs; 86.3 ± 9.3 kg) and 10 female (25 ± 6.0 yrs; 62.1 ± 5.9 kg) participants completed 3 conditions for 5 minutes: (1) no exercise (2) run with no load at 3.0 m/s and (3) run wearing a 9.1 kg belt. Heart rate was different among conditions (p ≤ 0.05). Pinch strength was significantly different for the non-dom

Splinting for the carpometacarpal joint relieves experimental basal thumb pain and loss of pinch strength.

BACKGROUND: Splinting is a quite common intervention for the first carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis, however, underlying mechanisms of biomechanical and analgesic effects has not been fully investigated. The aim of this study was to develop an experimental basal thumb pain model and to elucidate the effects of CMC splinting on the pain profile and motor function. METHODS: In 14 healthy subjects, experimental basal thumb pain was induced by hypertonic saline injection into the dorsal radial ligament located on base of the first metacarpal bone. Isotonic saline was injected contralaterally

Subterminal key pinch dynamometry: a new method to quantify strength deficit in ulnar nerve paralysis.

Precise pre- and postoperative assessments are fundamental to recording the quality of recovery after ulnar nerve repair. Because of its imprecision, manual muscle testing is being replaced by dynamometry to measure grasping and key-pinch strengths. However, both grasping and key pinch are dependent not only on the ulnar nerve but also the median and radial nerves. We propose to measure strength using a new sort of pinch, called the 'subterminal key pinch'. Strength was measured using a commercially available pinch meter. Patients applied pressure on the dynamometer with the interphalangeal jo

Effect of wrist position on power grip and key pinch strength following carpal tunnel decompression.

Power grip and thumb key pinch strength were measured pre- and immediately postoperatively in 30 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome while the wrist was in flexion and extension. The carpal tunnel decompression was performed under local infiltration with 1% lignocaine. Grip strength decreased more in wrist flexion than in wrist extension. No difference was found in thumb pinch strength. The authors conclude that some of the immediate postoperative loss of grip strength in wrist flexion can be attributed to prolapse of flexor tendons out of the carpal tunnel in this position.

Normative Data and Development of a Five-Grade Classification for Pinch Strength in Healthy Japanese Adults.

Background: Pulp pinch is the most frequently used grasping pattern amongst two-finger pinches; however, normative data on pulp pinch strength based on a large Japanese population have not been reported. The utility of such normative data would be enhanced by presenting five-grade classifications in addition to the mean and standard deviation (SD). Therefore, the objective of this study was to present normative data and establish sex-specific five-grade classifications for pulp pinch strength in healthy Japanese adults. Methods: A total of 514 healthy Japanese adults (337 men and 177 women) pa

Reference Values for Maximal Isometric Handgrip and Pinch Strength in Healthy Italian Adults Without Occupational Biomechanical Overload.

UNLABELLED: Background: Handgrip strength (HGS) and pinch strength are key indicators of hand function with relevant clinical and ergonomic implications. In Italy, normative reference values based on combined measurements of grip and pinch strength in healthy adults not exposed to upper-limb biomechanical overload are currently lacking. The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to provide descriptive reference values for HGS and three pinch types, stratified by sex and age group, in a healthy Italian adult population (18-65 years) not exposed to occupational biomechanical overload. Isolated A1 pulley release surgery for trigger finger leads to significant increase in tip-to-tip pinch strength.

BACKGROUND: Even in the first application of patients with early complaints of trigger finger, pinch strength of the hand may be affected. Therefore, it is difficult to assess the change of strength as a result of treatment in this problem. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the change of strength taking into account both measured and expected pinch strengths before and after A1 pulley release surgery. METHODS: Thirty fingers (9 thumbs, 12 middle, 8 ring and 1 index fingers) of 26 patients (17 women, 9 men) who underwent A1 pulley release were included into this study. The mean age of the pa

Association of tongue, handgrip, and pinch strength with blood-based phosphorylated-tau 181 in cognitively healthy older adults.

The development of blood-based phosphorylated tau (p-tau) biomarkers to identify Alzheimer's disease risk before cognitive decline offers a valuable opportunity for early intervention. Handgrip strength appears as a complementary non-invasive biomarker of dementia risk. Measurement of tongue strength may contribute further insight into the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. We examined associations between tongue strength, handgrip strength, three-finger pinch strength, and plasma p-tau181 in cognitively healthy older adults. A total of 158 cognitively healthy participants aged 50+ years
