Development of Interpolyelectrolyte Complex Based on Chitosan and Carboxymethylcellulose for Stabilizing Sandy Soil and Stimulating Vegetation of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.).

The issue of water and wind erosion of soil remains critically important. Polymeric materials offer a promising solution to this problem. In this study, we prepared and applied an interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPEC) composed of the biopolymers chitosan and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) for the structuring of forest sandy soils and the enhancement of the pre-sowing treatment of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seeds. A nonstoichiometric IPEC [Chitosan]:[Na-CMC] = [3:7] was synthesized, and its composition was determined using gravimetry, turbidimetry, and rheoviscosimetry methods. Soi

Water deficit induced by polyethylene glycol leads to the depletion of phenolic compounds but did not alter lignification in roots of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris).

Global climate change is accompanied by an increase in the frequency and severity of droughts, which negatively impact plant growth. One of the protective mechanisms that allows plants to withstand the negative drought effects is the lignification of vascular and dermal tissues, which prevents water loss. Despite some progress in research on lignification in model and crop plants, the characteristics of lignin accumulation in conifers need further investigation. In this study, we examined the adaptation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings to water deficit at weak (-0.15 MPa) and strong

Onset and Seasonal Kinetics of Xylogenesis in Pinus sylvestris L. on the Southern Fringes of Its Distribution Depend on Early Spring Air and Soil Temperature.

Climatic variation is inherently linked with tree phenology; however, phenological triggers depend on species and habitat. We analyzed key climatic factors for the onset of secondary growth for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) at the southern limit of its distribution in Siberia. From direct observations of developing tree rings, seasonal curves of the number of cells in the cambial zone, in the cell-expansion zone, and the total number of xylem tracheids were developed over seven years with a wide variety in the phenological dates. We found that later and shorter intervals of these stages of

Effects of copper deficiency and copper toxicity on organogenesis and some physiological and biochemical responses of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings grown in hydroculture.

The morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters of 6-week-old seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were studied under deficiency (1.2 nM) and chronic exposure to copper (0.32, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 μM CuSO4) in hydroculture. The deposit of copper in the seed allowed the seedlings to develop under copper deficiency without visible disruption of growth. The high sensitivity of Scots pine to the toxic effects of copper was shown, which manifested as a significant inhibition of growth and development. The loss of dominance of the main root and a strong inhibition of lateral root

Effect of raw humus under two adult Scots pine stands on ectomycorrhization, nutritional status, nitrogen uptake, phosphorus uptake and growth of Pinus sylvestris seedlings.

Ectomycorrhiza (EM) formation improves tree growth and nutrient acquisition, particularly that of nitrogen (N). Few studies have coupled the effects of naturally occurring EM morphotypes to the nutrition of host trees. To investigate this, pine seedlings were grown on raw humus substrates collected at two forest sites, R2 and R3. Ectomycorrhiza morphotypes were identified, and their respective N uptake rates from organic (2-(13)C, (15)N-glycine) and inorganic ((15)NH(4)Cl, Na(15)NO(3), (15)NH(4)NO(3), NH(4)(15)NO(3)) sources as well as their phosphate uptake rates were determined. Subsequently

Pinus sylvestris L. and Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L. M. Perry Essential Oils Inhibit Endotoxin-Induced Airway Hyperreactivity despite Aggravated Inflammatory Mechanisms in Mice.

Scots pine (SO) and clove (CO) essential oils (EOs) are commonly used by inhalation, and their main components are shown to reduce inflammatory mediator production. The aim of our research was to investigate the chemical composition of commercially available SO and CO by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and study their effects on airway functions and inflammation in an acute pneumonitis mouse model. Inflammation was evoked by intratracheal endotoxin and EOs were inhaled three times during the 24 h experimental period. Respiratory function was analyzed by unrestrained whole-body plethysmogr

Quantifying Dynamic Changes in Stem Storage-Water Use and Rehydration in Mature Trees: A Study on Pinus sylvestris Trees Exposed to Increased Atmospheric and Soil Drought.

Forests increasingly experience hot droughts, characterized by rising vapour pressure deficits (VPD) and declining soil moisture, highlighting the need to better understand water fluxes within trees. While stomatal conductance and transpiration are well studied, upstream fluxes such as internal stem water storage use and rehydration dynamics remain poorly quantified, despite their importance for maintaining tissue hydration and growth. Here, we quantify storage-water use and rehydration dynamics by combining high-resolution sap flow and dendrometer measurements in mature Pinus sylvestris at th

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Promote Growth of Seedlings, Regulate Soil Microbial Community, and Alleviate Damping-Off Disease Caused by Rhizoctonia solani on Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica.

As the excessive use of chemical fertilizers harms organisms and adversely affects the soil environment, the replacement of chemical fertilizers with biological fertilizers has attracted widespread attention as an environmental protection strategy. In this study, the effects of rhizosphere bacteria inoculation on growth of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica seedlings, soil parameters, soil microbial community structure, and the biocontrol of damping-off were studied by pot experiments. The results showed that all three rhizosphere bacteria (Pseudomonas chlororaphis, Pseudomonas extremaustralis, a

Identification by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of the volatile organic compounds emitted from the wood-rotting fungi Serpula lacrymans and Coniophora puteana, and from Pinus sylvestris timber.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by two wood-rotting basidiomycete fungi, Serpula lacrymans (dry rot fungus) and Coniophora puteana (cellar fungus), and the timber of Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine), were identified. Several volatile collection techniques were employed including dichloromethane solvent extraction, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and thermal desorption of VOCs entrained on Tenax GR. In addition, a new method of solid sample injection (SSI) is described which utilises a low injector temperature and an all-glass deactivated injector liner designed to minimise both the f

Use of Pinus sylvestris L. (Pinaceae), Origanum vulgare L. (Lamiaceae), and Thymus vulgaris L. (Lamiaceae) essential oils and their main components to enhance itraconazole activity against azole susceptible/not-susceptible Cryptococcus neoformans strains.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcal infections, besides being a problem for immunocompromised patients, are occasionally being a problem for immunocompetent patients. In addition, the lower susceptibility of this yeast to azoles is a growing problem in health care. To date, there are very few molecules with any activity towards Cryptococcus neoformans, leading to heightened interest in finding new alternatives or adjuvants to conventional drugs for the treatment of mycosis caused by this yeast. Since the essential oils (EOs) are considered as a potential rich source of bioactive antimicrobial compounds,

Manganese Deficiency Suppresses Growth and Photosynthetic Processes but Causes an Increase in the Expression of Photosynthetic Genes in Scots Pine Seedlings.

Manganese deficiency is a serious plant nutritional disorder, resulting in the loss of crop productivity in many parts of the world. Despite the progress made in the study of angiosperms, the demand for Mn in gymnosperms and the physiological responses to Mn deficiency remain unexplored. We studied the influence of Mn deficiency for 24 weeks on Pinus sylvestris L. seedling growth, ion homeostasis, pigment contents, lipid peroxidation, chlorophyll fluorescence indices and the transcript levels of photosynthetic genes and genes involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis. It was shown that Mn-deficient

War fires promote short-term alien plant colonization in eastern Ukraine's pine forests.

Russian full-scale military invasion has driven multiple ecosystem disturbances in the arid zone of eastern Ukraine, including fires of varying severity. Local forests, largely dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), were planted as uniform monocultures in a region where low-density woodlands had historically prevailed. However, little is known about how military-related fires affect successional trajectories in disturbed pine forests. We conducted fully digital surveys of vascular plant composition using under-canopy imagery collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle. Transects were estab

Deep learning-based automatic tree-level crown detection from high-resolution UAV imagery for aboveground carbon stock estimation.

Accurate delineation of individual tree crowns is essential for forest resource management and carbon stock estimation. However, traditional manual interpretation is inefficient under complex forest conditions, and existing deep learning-based object detection models remain vulnerable to crown overlap and background interference. To address these limitations, this study proposes an improved YOLOv8-CAFM model. By integrating the local feature extraction capability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with the global contextual modeling capability of transformers, the CAFM module enhances the

The current state of environmental pollution with sulfur dioxide (SO2) in Poland based on sulfur concentration in Scots pine needles.

The current air pollution by SO2 due to anthropogenic pressure in Poland was assessed based on sulfur concentrations in pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.). On 308 monitoring sample plots located in pine stands distributed across Poland, measurements were conducted in mineral soil layers (0-10 cm, 10-40 cm, 40-100 cm) and in the soil organic layer (+5-0 cm). Samples of Scots pine foliage (current-year needles) were then collected, and the sulfur concentration in these needles was determined. Based on these data, a map of the spatial variability of sulfur concentrations in pine needles was drawn

A study of crown development mechanisms using a shoot-based tree model and segmented terrestrial laser scanning data.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Functional-structural plant models (FSPMs) allow simulation of tree crown development as the sum of modular (e.g. shoot-level) responses triggered by the local environmental conditions. The actual process of space filling by the crowns can be studied. Although the FSPM simulations are at organ scale, the data for their validation have usually been at more aggregated levels (whole-crown or whole-tree). Measurements made by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) that have been segmented into elementary units (internodes) offer a phenotyping tool to validate the FSPM predictions at

Provenance effect on the fine-root metabolome and structure of mature Scots pine revealed in a long-term common garden experiment.

Rapid changes in temperature and precipitation present a major challenge for long-lived forest trees, as their long generation times limit the required rate of adaptive responses within populations. Common garden experiments provide valuable insights into local adaptation, but belowground responses remain understudied. We investigated fine root metabolomes, biochemistry and structure in 54-year-old Pinus sylvestris L. originating from two contrasting environments: a local lowland site and a colder high-elevation mountain region, both grown in a common garden. Untargeted gas chromatography-tand
