Antidiabetic activities of glycoprotein from pea (Pisum sativum L.) in STZ-induced diabetic mice.

Polysaccharides have hypoglycemic activity and pea protein has high nutritional value. The purified pea glycoprotein PGP2 has been shown to inhibit the activity of α-glucosidase and α-amylase in previous studies. To study the mechanism of PGP2-induced blood glucose lowering in vivo, this paper established a diabetic mouse model by intraperitoneal injection of STZ and high-fat diet, and evaluated the blood-glucose-lowering activity of the pea component PGP2 at different doses. The results showed that intragastric administration of PGP2 could effectively reduce diabetic weight loss and polyphagi

Biopriming with Schizophyllum commune Polysaccharides Modulates Antioxidant and Biochemical Responses in Pisum sativum L. Seedlings.

This study investigated the biostimulant potential of endo- and exo-polysaccharides (PSHs) obtained from two Schizophyllum commune strains originating from Italy (ITA) and Serbia (SRB), with a primary focus on their ability to modulate the antioxidant defense and biochemical responses of Pisum sativum L. seedlings under optimal and drought conditions. The PSH fractions were structurally characterized by complementary spectroscopic and microscopic approaches, revealing strain- and drying-dependent differences in their structural features. The characterized PSHs were subsequently applied as seed

Sitona lineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Larval Feeding on Pisum sativum L. Affects Soil and Plant Nitrogen.

Adults of Sitona lineatus (pea leaf weevil, PLW) feed on foliage of several Fabaceae species but larvae prefer to feed on nodules of Pisum sativum L. and Vicia faba L. Indirectly, through their feeding on rhizobia, weevils can reduce soil and plant available nitrogen (N). However, initial soil N can reduce nodulation and damage by the weevil and reduce control requirements. Understanding these interactions is necessary to make integrated pest management recommendations for PLW. We conducted a greenhouse study to quantify nodulation, soil and plant N content, and nodule damage by weevil larvae

Role of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in the alleviation of lead toxicity to Pisum sativum L.

Plant-microbe interaction is a significant tool to tackle heavy metals problem in the soil. A pot trial was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of lead tolerant rhizobacteria in improving pea growth under Pb stress. Lead sulfate (PbSO4) was used for spiking (250, 500, and 750 mg kg-1). Results indicated that inoculation with Pb-tolerant PGPR strain not only alleviated the harmful impacts of Pb on plant growth but also immobilized it in the soil. PGPR in the presence of Pb at concentrations of 0, 250, 500 and 750 mg kg-1, increased shoot and root lengths by 21, 15, 18% and 72, 80, 84%, respect

Nitrogen deficiency hinders etioplast development in stems of dark-grown pea (Pisum sativum) shoot cultures.

The effects of nitrogen (N) deprivation were studied in etiolated pea plants (Pisum sativum cv. Zsuzsi) grown in shoot cultures. The average shoot lengths decreased and the stems significantly altered considering their pigment contents, 77 K fluorescence spectra and ultrastructural properties. The protochlorophyllide (Pchlide) content and the relative contribution of the 654-655 nm emitting flash-photoactive Pchlide form significantly decreased. The etioplast inner membrane structure characteristically changed: N deprivation correlated with a decrease in the size and number of prolamellar bodi

[Biochemical changes associated with cadmium and copper stress in germinating pea seeds (Pisum sativum L.)].

Seeds of pea (Pisum sativum L.) were germinated for four days over two sheets of filter paper moistened with H2O (control) and 5 mM Cd(NO3)2 or CuSO4 (treated). The relationship between heavy-metal stress and breakdown of storage compounds was studied. Germination rate and growth of radicle decreased, while the water content in stressed seeds remained around the control values. Cotyledons changed their biochemical constituents: disorders in the contents of micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn), free amino acids and soluble sugars were found. Decline of alpha-amylase activity as well as acid phosphatase

The Effect of Exogenous Amylase Supplementation on the Nutritional Value of Pea (Pisum sativum L.) for Broiler Chickens.

The present study aimed to investigate whether the exogenous addition of amylase enhances the nutritional value of pea seeds for broiler chickens. In total, 84 1-day-old male broiler chickens (Ross 308) were used for the experimental study. During the first phase of the experiment (1-16 d), all birds in each treatment were fed with a corn-soybean meal reference diet. After this time, the first treatment (control) was still fed the reference diet. In the second and third treatment, 50% of the reference diet was replaced with 50% pea seeds. In addition, the third treatment was supplemented with

Long-day photoperiod promotes growth of pea (Pisum sativum L.) via auxin biosynthesis and polar transport.

Photoperiodic sensitivity is an essential factor that may affect agricultural practices under current climate scenarios. This study used pea (Pisum sativum) to examine effects of varying photoperiods on growth and photosynthetic parameters and then reveal the mechanistic basis of this process by linking them with tissue-specific distribution of auxin and regulation of related genes. This was achieved by transcriptome sequencing, genome-wide gene family identification, and expression pattern analysis. Best results in terms of growth and yield were obtained with a 20 h/4 h light/dark photoperiod

Accumulation of Phosphorus-Containing Compounds in Developing Seeds of Low-Phytate Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Mutants.

Low phytic acid (lpa) crops are low in phytic acid and high in inorganic phosphorus (Pi). In this study, two lpa pea genotypes, 1-150-81, 1-2347-144, and their progenitor CDC Bronco were grown in field trials for two years. The lpa genotypes were lower in IP₆ and higher in Pi when compared to CDC Bronco. The total P concentration was similar in lpa genotypes and CDC Bronco throughout the seed development. The action of myo-inositol phosphate synthase (MIPS) (EC 5.5.1.4) is the first and rate-limiting step in the phytic acid biosynthesis pathway. Aiming at understanding the genetic basis of the

Effect of exogenous taurine on pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants under salinity and iron deficiency stress.

Soil salinity and Fe deficiency affect plant growth and survival by changing nutrient availability and disrupting water balance. Natural and human activities, such as evaporation and deforestation, can intensify these soil conditions. Taurine, a novel growth regulator, holds promise in mediating plant defense responses. Its effects on defense responses are still unclear. Previously, taurine showed potential in improving clover tolerance to alkaline stress and manganese toxicity. Taurine impact on plant growth under Fe deficiency and salinity stress remains uninvestigated. A pot experiment was

Nutritional Evaluation and Protein Quality Assessment of Green Peas (Pisum sativum L.) Treated with Different Cooking Methods.

Green peas (Pisum sativum L.) are recognized as a sustainable source with protein content ranging from 23.1 to 30.9% on a dry basis. Data regarding the impact of household cooking methods on pea protein quality remain limited. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of four cooking methods - steaming (S4), boiling (B4), slow cooking (SC1), and pressure cooking (PC30) - compared with a control (without cooking treatment) on the nutritional profile, including protein content and in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD). SC1 was identified as the selected method, producing 6.52 ± 0.43% protein (

Nitric Oxide-Mediated Modulation of Photorespiratory Enzymes and Photochemical Components in Leaves of Pea Plants (Pisum sativum).

The photorespiratory metabolism safeguards photosynthesis against abiotic and biotic stress. Nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels rise in plants during abiotic stress. Low concentrations of NO or ROS are beneficial as signalling molecules, but they can be toxic to plant cells at high concentrations. ROS are known to modulate photorespiration; however, it is unclear whether NO affects photorespiratory enzymes and photochemical components simultaneously. We therefore used sodium nitroprusside (SNP) under dark, moderate light (ML), or high light (HL) conditions to simultaneo

Capacitation and acrosome reaction in buffalo bull spermatozoa assessed by chlortetracycline and Pisum sativum agglutinin fluorescence assay.

Studies on buffalo sperm capacitation have been limited because of the non-availability of a direct assay system. We describe two methods for detecting the acrosomal status of buffalo spermatozoa, namely chlortetracycline (CTC) fluorescence assay and Pisum sativum agglutinin (FITC-PSA) stain. We also test them under various treatment regimens and simultaneously standardize and calibrate them with transmission electron microscopy. An initial comparison of three physiological media, such as Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer, Tyrode solution and Brackett & Oliphant medium (having different calcium

A DNA helicase from Pisum sativum is homologous to translation initiation factor and stimulates topoisomerase I activity.

DNA helicases play an essential role in all aspects of nucleic acid metabolism, by providing a duplex-unwinding function. This is the first report of the isolation of a cDNA (1.6 kb) clone encoding functional DNA helicase from a plant (pea, Pisum sativum). The deduced amino-acid sequence has eight conserved helicase motifs of the DEAD-box protein family. It is a unique member of this family, containing DESD and SRT motifs instead of DEAD/H and SAT. The encoded 45.5 kDa protein has been overexpressed in bacteria and purified to homogeneity. The purified protein contains ATP-dependent DNA and RN

Solvent hydrogen isotope effects and anion inhibition of CO2 hydration catalysed by carbonic anhydrase from Pisum sativum.

Chloroplast carbonic anhydrase from Pisum sativum has been studied to elucidate the catalytic mechanism and to test if the mechanism proposed for human carbonic anhydrase II is also valid for pea carbonic anhydrase. The catalytic activity was found to depend on the chemical nature of the buffer. Barbital buffer gives the highest turnover number at infinite buffer concentration and the lowest Km value with respect to the buffer, while the kinetic parameters obtained in the imidazole-type buffer, 1-methylimidazole, do not differ from those obtained using the biological-type buffer Mops. The anio

Red emissive carbon dots derived from raspberry leaves for enhanced photosynthesis in pea (Pisum sativum L.) seedlings.

Nanomaterials are emerging as promising regulators for boosting crop photosynthesis and plant growth in sustainable agriculture. Herein, red emissive carbon dots (R-CDs) were solvothermally synthesized using waste raspberry leaves as the biomass source. The obtained R-CDs display emission spectra that overlap well with the red-light absorption region of chlorophyll. Pot-cultivation assays on pea seedlings verified that R-CDs exert obvious concentration-dependent growth-promoting effects, with 0.75 mg mL-1 identified as the optimal concentration. At this concentration, seedlings root and shoot

Nitric oxide-induced Na+/H+ exchange activity confers salt tolerance in pea (Pisum sativum L.) mesophyll cells.

Salinity stress severely hinders global agricultural productivity, and the issue will only increase under current climate scenarios. Due to complexity of salinity tolerance traits, crop breeding for salt tolerance remains a highly challenging task. The exogenous application of growth regulators, such as nitric oxide (NO), is considered a viable practical alternative to boost crop yield and quality under conditions of soil salinity. Numerous papers reported beneficial role of exogenous NO application on plant growth under salt stress, but very few explored the mechanistic basis of this process.
