Placenta is an important organ that is crucial for both fetal and maternal health. Abnormalities of the placenta, such as during intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and pre-eclampsia (PE) are common, and an improved understanding of these diseases is needed to improve medical care. Biomechanics analysis of the placenta is an under-explored area of investigation, which has demonstrated usefulness in contributing to our understanding of the placenta physiology. In this review, we introduce fundamental biomechanics concepts and discuss the findings of biomechanical analysis of the placenta and

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the recurrence rate of placenta-mediated diseases (PMDs) such as preeclampsia (PE) and/or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), intrauterine fetal death (IUFD), and placental abruption (PA) in high-risk patients on antithrombotic therapy (AT) because of a previous obstetrical history for such complications.
METHODS: The study group (SG) included 150 patients to whom either 100 mg of aspirin or low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was administered due to a previous history of PMDs. The AT in the SG was started before 16 gestational weeks (g.w.). The patients in the firs

The placenta is the interface between mother and fetus and inadequate function contributes to short and long-term ill-health. The placenta is absent from most large-scale RNA-Seq datasets. We therefore analyze long and small RNAs (~101 and 20 million reads per sample respectively) from 302 human placentas, including 94 cases of preeclampsia (PE) and 56 cases of fetal growth restriction (FGR). The placental transcriptome has the seventh lowest complexity of 50 human tissues: 271 genes account for 50% of all reads. We identify multiple circular RNAs and validate 6 of these by Sanger sequencing a

The objectives of this study were to determine the risk factors for retained placenta by evaluating several reproductive factors in individual cows, and to determine the effects of retained placenta on the occurrence of postpartum diseases and subsequent reproductive performance in dairy herds. The health status, cow parity, calving, and breeding dates were recorded from 805 calvings in nine dairy herds from October 2000 to March 2004. We used logistic regression to evaluate the effects of these factors on the incidence of retained placenta. A stepwise procedure, used to obtain the appropriate

Cardiovascular disease remains the number one killer in western nations in spite of declines in death rates following improvements in clinical care. It has been 20 years since David Barker and colleagues showed that slow rates of prenatal growth predict mortality from ischemic heart disease. Thus, fetal undergrowth and its associated cardiovascular diseases must be due, in part, to placental inadequacies. This conclusion is supported by a number of studies linking placental characteristics with various adult diseases. A "U" shaped relationship between placental-to-fetal weight ratio and heart

Eleven placentae and one fibroblast cell culture from pregnancies complicated by various inherited metabolic disorders, together with five chorionic villus biopsies from pregnancies at risk, were examined for ultrastructural evidence of accumulation of metabolites. Abnormal ultrastructural features were present as early as 10 weeks gestation. Myelin bodies were found in all placental cell types in a case of Niemann-Pick disorder and stromal cells showed marked vacuolation in Hurler's disease. Membranous arrays were occasionally identified in the lysosomes of stromal cells in a case of Sandhoff

INTRODUCTION: Placenta-mediated diseases are associated with structural changes in the placenta. Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) imaging measures the acoustic properties of the tissue, which are correlated to the underlying tissue structure. We aimed to develop and validate a diagnostic prediction model using QUS measurements for pre-eclampsia (PE) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses/neonates.
METHODS: For this prospective case-control study, placentas were collected from a group of women who delivered via cesarean section at BC Women's Hospital, Vancouver, Canada. Ultrasound data were

The maternal-fetal environment, controlled and modulated by the placenta, plays a critical role in the development and well-being of the fetus, with long-term impact through programming of lifelong health. The fetal cardiovascular system and placenta emerge at the same time embryologically, and thus placental form and function are altered in the presence of congenital heart disease (CHD). In this review, we report on what is known about the placenta from a structural and functional perspective when there is CHD. We describe the various unique pathologic findings as well as the diagnostic imagi

Inadequate placental development results in a number of untoward pregnancy outcomes, including pre-eclampsia, placental abruption and infarction, and fetal growth restriction and stillbirth. Although it was once assumed that these pregnancy-related complications caused only upfront maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, poor placental development and function is now a well-recognized female-specific risk factor for future vascular morbidity and mortality. The epidemiological, genetic, and physiological research linking placental development and cardiovascular disease is growing, and this

BACKGROUND: Maternal syphilis rates in the United States have risen dramatically, from 87.2 per 100,000 births in 2016 to 357.9 per 100,000 births in 2024, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports. Congenital syphilis rates have also been on the upswing, increasing from 60.0 to 109.6 per 100,000 births between 2020 and 2024, with cases on the rise for the twelfth consecutive year. This trend poses a pressing public health concern. Diagnosing syphilis, particularly in pregnancy, can be challenging due to its variable and often nonspecific presentation. Delayed recog

Wilson's disease is a rare genetic disorder of copper metabolism that causes primary hepatic cirrhosis, secondary menstrual abnormalities and infertility. Following the appropriate therapy patients are asymptomatic and pregnancy may be achieved. We present a case of placental abruption in a pregnant woman with Wilson's disease and we review the management dilemmas and treatment options of pregnant women with Wilson's disease.

The hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is an acidic protein with a strong mitogenic effect on hepatocytes. Hepatocyte growth factor mRNA recently was cloned from a placental cDNA library. Here we demonstrate the purification of HGF from human placenta with heparin-agarose chromatography and TSK-heparin high-pressure liquid chromatography and describe the distribution of placental HGF by immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal antibody to HGF. The yield of HGF from the placenta was approximately 100 to 200 times greater than that previously obtained from human plasma. Placental HGF was expressed st

We have investigated the immunopathology of the placenta in bullous diseases by studying the deposition of immune complexes and expression of MHC class II subregion products by immunohistological methods. Placentae from seven patients with pemphigoid gestationis (PG) and two patients with linear IgA disease were studied. In PG immune complexes containing IgGI and C3 were identified in six cases. In linear IgA disease IgAI containing immune complexes were found in both cases. Placentae from patients with PG showed aberrant expression of MHC Class II products. This was not seen in the placentae

In this study the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and c-erbB-2, c-erbB-3 and c-erbB-4 oncogenes were investigated in gestational trophoblastic diseases and normal first trimester placenta. Furthermore, the possibility that macrophage (IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta, TNF) and lymphocyte (IL-2, gamma-IFN, GM-CSF) cytokines effects are mediated by changes in EGFR expression were studied. Paraffin sections of 16 cases of partial mole, 25 cases of complete mole, 10 cases of gestational choriocarcinoma and 11 cases of therapeutic abortion were studied immunohistochemically for EGFR, c-e

The placenta is a pregnancy-specific organ, functioning as the maternal-fetal interface and mediating essential processes including exchange, protection, and endocrine regulation. Placental abnormalities contribute to the pathophysiology, onset, progression, and prognosis of major perinatal disorders, making imaging modalities that enable their detection and monitoring crucial. Ultrasound (US) imaging is the principal modality for placental imaging, providing structural assessment with B-mode and blood flow evaluation with Doppler mode. Furthermore, advanced techniques such as 3D power Doppler
