Plasticity, exudation and microbiome-association of the root system of Pellitory-of-the-wall plants grown in environments impaired in iron availability.

The investigation of the adaptive strategies of wild plant species to extreme environments is a challenging issue, which favors the identification of new traits for plant resilience. We investigated different traits which characterize the root-soil interaction of Parietaria judaica, a wild plant species commonly known as "Pellitory-of-the-wall". P. judaica adopts the acidification-reduction strategy (Strategy I) for iron (Fe) acquisition from soil, and it can complete its life cycle in highly calcareous environments without any symptoms of chlorosis. In a field-to-lab approach, the microbiome

Belowground carbon use in woody plants under experimental warming: uneven evidence for fine-root, root-exudation, and mycorrhizal responses.

How warming changes belowground carbon use in woody plants remains poorly understood. Most experiments measure fine-root, root-exudation, and mycorrhizal responses separately, providing limited evidence on how these responses vary together within the same experiment. We synthesized 13 primary publications from 11 independent experiments: eight field, one outdoor pot, and two controlled experiments. Our synthesis showed no significant increase in fine-root biomass or production. Root respiration, mortality, and N concentration increased, whereas root P and non-structural carbohydrate concentrat

Control of Bacterial Canker caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) in kiwifruit plants by resinous exudates and extracts of Adesmia balsamica.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) is the pathogen responsible for kiwifruit's bacterial canker, which produces significant economic losses. Effective treatments and measures to control this disease have not yet been found; it is currently controlled with many products containing heavy metals (especially copper) or antibiotics (especially streptomycin), which can cause serious phytotoxicity and antibacterial resistance problems. Therefore, it is essential to develop new strategies to control this disease by obtaining a product of natural origin of sustainable use, which is b

In vitro antibacterial activity of plant essential oils against Staphylococcus hyicus and Staphylococcus aureus, the causative agents of exudative epidermitis in pigs.

Greasy pig disease or exudative epidermitis, a generalized or localized skin disease affecting piglets, is mainly caused by Staphylococcus hyicus, although other staphylococcal species such as Staphylococcus aureus may also induce disease. Piglets with skin lesions can be treated systemically with antibiotics. However, antimicrobial resistance to β-lactam antibiotics are now frequently observed in S. hyicus and S. aureus isolates. In this study, the antibacterial activity of plant essential oils as well as their ability to potentiate the effect of several antimicrobial compounds against S. hyi

Novel phosphatase PvPAP1 from the As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata promotes organic P utilization and plant growth: Extracellular exudation and phytate hydrolysis.

Organic phosphorus (Po) is a large component of soil P, but it is often unavailable for plant uptake. Purple acid phosphatases (PAP) can hydrolyze a wide range of Po, playing an important role in Po utilization by plants. In this study, we investigated a novel secretary PvPAP1 from the As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata, which can effectively utilize exogenous Po, including adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and phytate. Unlike other PAP, PvPAP1 was abundantly-expressed in P. vittata roots, which was upregulated 3.5-folds under P-deprivation than P-sufficient conditions. When expressed in tobacco, i

Impacts of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on Phragmites australis root exudation throughout plant life cycle: Defense responses and phytoremediation potential.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are emerging contaminants of high-priority risks in surface waters, imposing pseudo-persistent stress on aquatic plants. Understanding these plants' root exudation responses and regulatory mechanisms is crucial for preserving their ecological functions and advancing phytoremediation strategies. This study investigated the root exudate profiles of Phragmites australis across its life cycle under exposure to an environmental-level mixture of NSAIDs (diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, and naproxen; 100 ng/L each). NSAID accumulation, ox

MdUGT88F1 enhances plant resistance to Fusarium proliferatum f.sp. malus domestica MR5 via root exudate-mediated assembly of disease-suppressive rhizosphere microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Apple replant disease (ARD) is a major threat to the sustainable development of China's apple industry. It is primarily caused by the accumulation of phloridzin and the pathogen Fusarium proliferatum f.sp. malus domestica MR5 (Fpmd MR5). MdUGT88F1-mediated phloridzin biosynthesis is known to enhance disease resistance, but its role in shaping the rhizosphere microbiome and conferring resistance against Fpmd MR5 remains unclear. In this study, we used wild-type (WT) and MdUGT88F1 transgenic apple lines to systematically investigate the mechanism by which MdUGT88F1 regulates the rhiz

Rethinking phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands: Amino acid exudation-mediated root-surface iron redox cycling drives plant luxury uptake to outperform substrate adsorption.

Plants can exhibit phosphorus luxury uptake, absorbing several-fold more P than required under P-sufficient conditions. Harnessing this underutilized capacity helps to overcome substrate adsorption saturation and improve the phosphorus removal efficiency and sustainability of subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs). Here, we engineered a dense, fiber filter-like mat-structured root system to replace conventional inert substrates and systematically investigated its P removal performance, mechanisms, and engineering feasibility. From late spring to early winter, the root-mat system more tha

An aeroponic system to characterize maize root exudates in relation to N and P nutrition and arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis.

Root exudates play major roles in the recruitment of plant microbiota. The metabolic composition of root exudates varies according to plant developmental stage, nutrient availability, (a)biotic stresses, and interaction with the root-associated microbiota, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which play a key role in plant mineral nutrition and stress tolerance. While it is well established that AMF can perceive plant root exudate compounds, little is known about plant root exudate modifications in response to AMF inoculation. Here, we developed an aeroponic-based culture system suita

Root exudate metabolomes change under drought and show limited capacity for recovery.

Root exudates comprise a large variety of compounds released by plants into the rhizosphere, including low-molecular-weight primary metabolites (particularly saccharides, amino acids and organic acids) and secondary metabolites (phenolics, flavonoids and terpenoids). Changes in exudate composition could have impacts on the plant itself, on other plants, on soil properties (e.g. amount of soil organic matter), and on soil organisms. The effects of drought on the composition of root exudates, however, have been rarely studied. We used an ecometabolomics approach to identify the compounds in the

Plants may alter competition by modifying nutrient bioavailability in rhizosphere: a modeling approach.

Plants modify nutrient availability by releasing chemicals in the rhizosphere. This change in availability induced by roots (bioavailability) is known to improve nutrient uptake by individual plants releasing such compounds. Can this bioavailability alter plant competition for nutrients and under what conditions? To address these questions, we have developed a model of nutrient competition between plant species based on mechanistic descriptions of nutrient diffusion, plant exudation, and plant uptake. The model was parameterized using data of the effects of root citrate exudation on phosphorus

Magnetite nanoparticle coating chemistry regulates root uptake pathways and iron chlorosis in plants.

Understanding the fundamental interaction of nanoparticles at plant interfaces is critical for reaching field-scale applications of nanotechnology-enabled plant agriculture, as the processes between nanoparticles and root interfaces such as root compartments and root exudates remain largely unclear. Here, using iron deficiency-induced plant chlorosis as an indicator phenotype, we evaluated the iron transport capacity of Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with citrate (CA) or polyacrylic acid (PAA) in the plant rhizosphere. Both nanoparticles can be used as a regulator of plant hormones to promote root

Linking plant nutritional status to plant-microbe interactions.

Plants have developed a wide-range of adaptations to overcome nutrient limitation, including changes to the quantity and composition of carbon-containing compounds released by roots. Root-associated bacteria are largely influenced by these compounds which can be perceived as signals or substrates. Here, we evaluate the effect of root exudates collected from maize plants grown under nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), iron (Fe) and potassium (K) deficiencies on the transcriptome of the plant growth promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42. The largest shifts in gene expression

Collection and Purification of Secondary Metabolites from Root Exudates for LC-MS/MS Analyses.

Plants communicate with their environment through the production of root exudates. These contain a variety of secondary metabolites that mediate plant interactions in the rhizosphere. Collecting these exudates without altering root structure, the metabolites, and the environmental conditions is crucial to understanding real processes occurring in our studies, enabling time-course experiments and separate analysis of roots and exudates. The present chapter shows an easy and non-destructive method to collect root exudates from intact plants, as well as their purification and concentration using

EDTA-Facilitated Collection of Phloem Exudates for Chemical Analyses.

Phloem exudates can be collected using several methods, including the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-facilitated method. Plant parts, such as leaves or inflorescences, are cut, and the cut edges are immediately placed into EDTA solution, which prevents plugging of sieve tubes. After this first inoculation, plant parts are transferred to water, into which phloem exudates are collected for a few hours. Inoculation and collection take place in the dark at high relative humidity. The samples can subsequently be used for different chemical analyses of RNA, proteins and various primary and s

Root exudate-mediated interspecific interactions reshape the rhizosphere microbiome and promote the accumulation of bioactive compounds in Pinellia ternata.

Plant recognition and responses to neighbors are key mechanisms that regulate interspecific interactions. Although aboveground signaling via volatile organic compounds has received increasing attention, the role of soil-derived signals in belowground interactions remains poorly understood. In this study, a peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)-Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Makino intercropping system was used to investigate how root exudates regulate the recruitment of rhizosphere microbes to neighboring plants, with the aim of providing a theoretical basis for understanding how intercropping promotes plan

Unraveling the chemical communication of root exudates and allelopathy for sustainable ecology and agriculture.

Root exudates, a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds secreted by healthy plant roots, play a central role in belowground chemical interactions, particularly through the phenomenon of allelopathy. These exudates, which include phenolic acids, flavonoids, amino acids, terpenoids, phytohormones, and fatty acids, do more than support nutrient mobilization and microbial associations. They act as allelochemicals that affect the germination, growth, and physiology of neighboring plants. Allelopathy influences key ecological processes such as plant succession, species dominance, and the

Comparative transcriptomic analysis reveals distinct responses of beneficial bacterial endophytes to wild and cultivated rice root exudates.

Root exudates from Oryza rufi pogon elicit stronger transcriptional responses in benefi cial bacterial endophytes and, together with bacterial inoculation, reveal distinct plant responses compared with cultivated rice, suggesting that microbiome-associated traits altered during domestication could be exploited for sustainable rice breeding. Beneficial interactions between plants and microorganisms strongly influence plant health and productivity, and root exudates play a central role in shaping these associations. In this study, we analyzed the transcriptional responses of the bacterial endoph
