Ubiquitin-Mediated Proteolysis as a Regulator of the Plant Defense-Growth Balance.

To survive in challenging environments, plants must rapidly activate immune responses while maintaining developmental plasticity and reproductive success. This requires continuous negotiation of limited energy and metabolic resources between growth, development, and defense. Ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis has emerged as a versatile regulatory mechanism that may integrate immune responses with plant developmental programs. In this review, we summarize accumulating evidence that ubiquitination shapes immune responses at multiple regulatory levels. Many of these immune-regulatory mechanisms depen

The BZR1-EDS1 module regulates plant growth-defense coordination.

Plants have developed sophisticated strategies to coordinate growth and immunity, but our understanding of the underlying mechanism remains limited. In this study, we identified a novel molecular module that regulates plant growth and defense in both compatible and incompatible infections. This module consisted of BZR1, a key transcription factor in brassinosteroid (BR) signaling, and EDS1, an essential positive regulator of plant innate immunity. We found that EDS1 interacts with BZR1 and suppresses its transcriptional activities. Consistently, upregulation of EDS1 function by a virulent Pseu

Plant Growth Regulators and Activated Charcoal Selectively Affect Phenylethanoid and Flavone Glycoside Accumulation in Sideritis scardica Griseb. Tissue Culture.

Sideritis scardica Griseb. is a Balkan endemic species traditionally used for the treatment of pulmonary emphysema and angina pectoris. Recent research has also shown its phytotherapeutic potential as an anticancer and neuroprotective agent. These findings, as well as the endangered status of the species in its wild habitats, have motivated the present research on application of plant cell tissue and organ culture for the purposes of both valuable germplasm conservation and secondary metabolites production. Shoot cultures of the plant were initiated from sterile germinated seeds and the effect

Ethylene-releasing plant growth regulators promote ripening initiation by stimulating sugar, acid and anthocyanin metabolism in blueberry (Vaccinium ashei).

BACKGROUND: Fruit ripening is a coordinated process that leads to an increase in sugars, decrease in acids and accumulation of pigments. Blueberry fruit exhibit an atypical climacteric ripening behavior. These fruit display an increase in respiration and ethylene production during ripening, however ethylene synthesis is developmentally regulated. In this study, the effect of ethylene on blueberry fruit ripening was investigated via preharvest applications of ethylene-releasing plant growth regulators (PGRs), ethephon and 1-aminocyclopropane 1-carboxylic acid (ACC), in one southern highbush cul

Recent advances and mechanistic interactions of hydrogen sulfide with plant growth regulators in relation to abiotic stress tolerance in plants.

Adverse environmental constraints such as drought, heat, cold, salinity, and heavy metal toxicity are the primary concerns of the agricultural industry across the globe, as these stresses negatively affect yield and quality of crop production and therefore can be a major threat to world food security. Recently, it has been demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is well-known as a gasotransmitter in animals, also plays a potent role in various growth and developmental processes in plants. H2S, as a potent signaling molecule, is involved in several plant processes such as in the regulat

Effects of stage-specific plant growth regulators application on lodging resistance and yield formation in maize under high planting density.

In response to the growing issue of maize lodging caused by typhoons shifting northward into Northeast China, the rational application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) offers a strategy to safeguard maize yields and mitigate economic losses. To elucidate how PGRs applied at different growing stages affect lodging resistance and grain yield, a two-year field experiment (2019-2020) was conducted at the Gongzhuling Field Experimental Station, Jilin Province. The hybrid "Fumin 985" was planted under two densities: D1, 60 000 plants ha⁻1 and D2, 90 000 plants ha⁻1, with three spraying treatments:

Nitrogen Regulation Under Heavy Metal Stress in Soil-Plant Systems: Implications for Plant Growth and Phytoremediation.

Nitrogen (N) is a vital macronutrient that dictates soil fertility and plant productivity. Heavy metal contamination threatens plant health by disrupting nutrient uptake and photosynthesis. Specifically, heavy metals accumulate in soils and inhibit key N-assimilatory enzymes, such as nitrate reductase. This inhibition restricts N availability, which limits protein synthesis and reduces overall plant biomass. This review synthesizes the recent literature to evaluate the mechanisms of heavy metal-N interactions, highlighting a critical scientific insight: N exerts a dual role in heavy metal stre

The roles of protein S-nitrosylation in regulating the growth and development of plants: A review.

The free radical nitric oxide (NO) is an important redox-related signaling molecule modulating wide range of biological processes in all living plants. The transfer of NO bioactivity could be executed chiefly through a prototypic, redox-based post-translational modification, S-nitrosylation that covalently adds NO moiety to a reactive cysteine thiol of a target protein to form an S-nitrosothiol. Protein S-nitrosylation is recently emerged as an evolutionarily conserved and important mechanism regulating multiple aspects of plant growth and development. Here, we review the recent progress of S-

A Rapid and Highly Effective Protocol for Sporophyte Proliferation of Drynaria roosii and the Potential Regulation Mechanism by Plant Growth Regulators.

Sporophyte propagation in medicinal ferns is influenced by explant type, owing to their distinctive two-phase life cycle: haloid gametophyte and sporophyte. However, few studies have systematically investigated sporophyte proliferation using different explants. This study established an efficient in vitro propagation system for the medicinal fern Drynaria roosii using two types of explants: with green globules (A) and without them (B). An L9(34) orthogonal design tested 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA), 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) on direct sporophyte r

Role of Plant Growth Regulators and Biological, Chemical, Nutrient, and Nanomaterial-Based Approaches in Mitigating Micro- and Nanoplastic Stress in Agroecosystems.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are emerging pollutants in agricultural ecosystems, accumulating in soils and adversely affecting plant growth and crop yields. Although their toxicity is increasingly reported, the role of stress mitigators in reducing MNPs-induced toxicity in soil-plant systems remains insufficiently summarized. This review evaluates current research on mitigation strategies, including nanoparticles, phytohormones, biochar, chemicals, nutrients, plant growth-promoting bacteria and rhizobacteria, fungi, and signaling molecules. Evidence shows that these mitigators can reduce MNP

Abscisic acid interplay with phytohormones, plant growth regulators and signaling molecules in orchestrating an elaborate crosstalk for stress resilience in plants.

The increasing challenges, posed by plant biotic and abiotic stress, significantly impact agroecosystems, particularly in the context of rapid global climate change. Phytohormones function as critical chemical messengers, enabling plants to endure these stresses through a complex regulatory framework, thereby playing an essential role in plant survival. Recent research has increasingly underscored the significance of abscisic acid (ABA), in facilitating a prominent role under adverse conditions within plants. ABA has been shown to engage with major phytohormones, such as gibberellins (GAs), et

Growth-regulating factors: conserved and divergent roles in plant growth and development and potential value for crop improvement.

High yield and stress resistance are the major prerequisites for successful crop cultivation, and can be achieved by modifying plant architecture. Evolutionarily conserved growth-regulating factors (GRFs) control the growth of different tissues and organs of plants. Here, we provide a systematic overview of the expression patterns of GRF genes and the structural features of GRF proteins in different plant species. Moreover, we illustrate the conserved and divergent roles of GRFs, microRNA396 (miR396), and GRF-interacting factors (GIFs) in leaf, root, and flower development. We also describe th
