Nitrogen-fixing bacteria and Oxalis - evidence for a vertically inherited bacterial symbiosis.

BACKGROUND: Plant-endophyte symbioses often revolve around nitrogen metabolism, and involve varying degrees of intimacy. Although evidence for vertical inheritance of nitrogen-fixing endophytic bacteria is increasing, it is confined mostly to crop plants, and to date no such system has been reported for geophytes. METHODS: Bacterial endophytes associated with Oxalis, the most species-rich geophytic genus form the Cape Flora in southern Africa was studied. Culturable endophytes were isolated from surface-sterilized vegetative and reproductive plant organs for six host species at three location

Nanoclay-Triggered In Situ Self-Gelling Yam Microparticles via Coagulation Activation for Robust Wet Tissue Adhesion and Instant Hemostasis.

Gel-type hemostatic agents possess irreplaceable advantages over other material forms in managing irregular wounds and deep tissue bleeding. However, their clinical application remains limited in treating lethal massive hemorrhage due to inadequate fluid absorption, swelling-induced detachment, and insufficient procoagulant activity. This study developed a coagulation-mediated self-gelling microparticle powder composed of Yam mucilage and halloysite nanoclay (HNTs) for robust wet tissue adhesion and rapid massive hemorrhage control. The microparticles in ∼20 μm spontaneously form through physi

Flaxseed-based fortification approaches for nutritional and functional improvement of foods.

Imbalanced dietary intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is increasingly associated with the incidence of chronic metabolic disorders. As the richest plant-based source of alpha-linolenic acid, flaxseed offers an effective strategy to improve the dietary omega-6: omega-3 ratio and thereby support metabolic health. In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed is good source of lignans, proteins, micronutrients and mucilage, imparting broad nutritional and functional significance. This review synthesizes recent advances in flaxseed-based fortification strategies and food product development

Unveiling Bone and Dental Regeneration Potential of Quince Seed Mucilage-Nanohydroxyapatite Scaffolds in Rabbit Mandibles.

Donor-side morbidity of autografting for maxillofacial region defect regeneration has directed attention to bioengineered scaffolds. Composite scaffolds that mimic the bone extracellular matrix (ECM) are the potential candidates for defect reconstruction. Herein, a plant-based regenerative hydrogel, quince seed mucilage (QSM), was enriched with the nanohydroxyapatite (nHAp) particles to construct composite scaffolds (QSM/nHAp). The emerging scaffold is able to induce cellular spheroid formation and regenerate the critical-sized bilateral mandibular defects in rabbits. The macroscopic observati

Physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, optical, and barrier characterization of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) mucilage-protein concentrate biodegradable films.

In this study, the effect of chia mucilage (CM) and protein concentrate (CPC) contents on the physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, and optical characteristics of developed films was evaluated. Films were prepared dissolving CM:CPC mixtures (1% w/v) in seven ratios (0:1, 1:4, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 1:0). Microstructure of treatments with higher CM revealed the formation of polysaccharide granules. A semicrystalline behavior was manifested in 1:0, which decreased as CPC content in the formulations increased. Contact angle values obtained for 1:1 and 2:1 were the highest (61.24° and 62.44°), eviden

Pichia pastoris Mediated Digestion of Water-Soluble Polysaccharides from Cress Seed Mucilage Produces Potent Antidiabetic Oligosaccharides.

Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous metabolic disorder that poses significant health and economic challenges across the globe. Polysaccharides, found abundantly in edible plants, hold promise for managing diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels (BGL) and insulin resistance. However, most of these polysaccharides cannot be digested or absorbed directly by the human body. Here we report the production of antidiabetic oligosaccharides from cress seed mucilage polysaccharides using yeast fermentation. The water-soluble polysaccharides extracted from cress seed mucilage were precipitated using 7

Effects of oil types on the stability of oil-in-water emulsions prepared using Dioscorea opposita mucilage and gums.

To evaluate the effects of different oil types (mandarin oil, soybean oil, and fish oil) on emulsion stability, oil-in-water emulsions were prepared using Dioscorea opposita mucilage and food-grade gums (guar gum, xanthan gum, and pectin). Key indicators, such as droplet size, turbidity, interfacial tension, and rheological properties, were characterized. Soybean oil emulsions exhibited superior 21-day storage stability, with smaller droplet sizes (56.98 nm) and enhanced apparent viscosity (50.82 Pa·s). Notably, the pectin-Dioscorea opposita mucilage-soybean oil emulsions (1:10:25, weight rati

Evolutionary studies of the bHLH transcription factors belonging to MBW complex: their role in seed development.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The MBW complex consist of proteins belonging to three major families (MYB, bHLH and WDR) involved in various processes throughout plant development: epidermal cell development, mucilage secretory cells and flavonoid biosynthesis. Recently, it has been reported that TT8, encoding a bHLH transcription factor, is involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids in the seed coat and it also plays a role in bypassing the postzygotic barrier resulting from an unbalance in genetic loads of the parental lines. Here, we focus on the functional evolution, in seed development, of the bHLH

An Efficient Clearing Protocol for the Study of Seed Development in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the major cash crops worldwide. The tomato seed is an important model for studying genetics and developmental biology during plant reproduction. Visualization of finer embryonic structure within a tomato seed is often hampered by seed coat mucilage, multi-cell-layered integument, and a thick-walled endosperm, which needs to be resolved by laborious embedding-sectioning. A simpler alternative is to employ tissue clearing techniques that turn the seed almost transparent using chemical agents. Although conventional clearing procedures allow deep insight

Lipid nanocarriers for nucleic acid delivery in plants and crop protection: bridging nanomedicine concepts with agricultural applications.

Exogenously applied nucleic acid-based agents are emerging as a promising strategy in agriculture for highly selective crop protection and plant trait modulation; however, their practical deployment remains constrained by inefficient delivery, rapid environmental degradation, and poor robustness under field conditions. Lipid-based nanocarriers, long established in pharmaceutical science as non-viral delivery systems, offer a versatile platform to address these challenges but require substantial adaptation to function effectively in both plants and open-environment agricultural conditions. This

Loss of UBIQUITIN-PROTEIN LIGASE 3 (UPL3) impairs cellulose-xylan structural organization in Arabidopsis seed mucilage.

Arabidopsis thaliana seeds release large capsules of mucilaginous polysaccharides, whose adherence depends not only cellulose and hemicellulose biosynthesis but also their interactions. However, the key proteins regulating the connection within this polysaccharide network in the seed coat mucilage remain unclear and require further investigation. Through reverse genetics, we demonstrate that UBIQUITIN-PROTEIN LIGASE 3 (UPL3), a nucleus-localized, HECT E3 ligase protein, is required for the proper organization of cellulosic rays in seed coat mucilage. Disruption of UPL3 results in an enlarged s

Insights into the role of chia mucilage in lipid digestion reduction through bile salt sequestration.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chia mucilage (CM) on the lipid digestion of CM and β-lactoglobulin (β-lg)-CM mixed oil/water emulsions and to explore this effect through its interactions with bile salts (BS), key agents in the duodenal lipolysis process. CM exhibited high emulsifying and stabilizing capacity, particularly at concentrations above 0.5% w/w. During duodenal digestion, CM emulsions showed significant lower fatty acid release (21-25%) compared to mixed β-lg-CM (84-91%) and β-lg (100%) emulsions, corresponding to an approximate 75-80% reduction in lipolysis relative to t

PEG-based-ultrasound-microwave synergistic extraction of mucilage polysaccharides from chia seed: Structural characterization and bioactivity.

In this study, the effects of microwave, ultrasound, ultrasound-microwave synergy, and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-200 on the chia seed mucilage's (CSM) structural, thermal, and functional properties have been evaluated by modern spectroscopic techniques, crystal diffraction, and thermal analyses. The results showed that CSM, extracted by PEG-200 aqueous solution has the largest particles (1120-1231 μm), and the smallest size (44.06-317.19 μm) has been observed in microwave extraction. Furthermore, microwave exposure seems to impact the primary structure of CSM profoundly, evidenced by shifts an
