Assessment of Multiple Solvents for Extraction and Direct GC-MS Determination of the Phytochemical Inventory of Sansevieria Extrafoliar Nectar Droplets.

Considerable effort has been devoted to analytical determinations of sugar and amino acid constituents of plant nectars, with the primary aim of understanding their ecological roles, yet few studies have reported more exhaustive organic compound inventories of plant nectars or extrafoliar nectars. This work evaluated the efficacy of four solvents (ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, toluene and hexane) to extract the greatest number of organic compound classes and unique compounds from extrafoliar nectar drops produced by Sansevieria spp. Aggregation of the results from each solvent revealed that

Fueling the fall migration of the monarch butterfly.

Monarch butterflies in eastern North America accumulate lipids during their fall migration to central Mexico, and use them as their energy source during a 5 month overwintering period. When and where along their migratory journey the butterflies accumulate these lipids has implications for the importance of fall nectar sources in North America. We analyzed the lipid content of 765 summer breeding and fall migrant monarch butterflies collected at 1 nectaring site in central Virginia over 4 years (1998-2001), and compared them with 16 additional published and unpublished datasets from other site

Convergent evolution of a blood-red nectar pigment in vertebrate-pollinated flowers.

Nearly 90% of flowering plants depend on animals for reproduction. One of the main rewards plants offer to pollinators for visitation is nectar. Nesocodon mauritianus (Campanulaceae) produces a blood-red nectar that has been proposed to serve as a visual attractant for pollinator visitation. Here, we show that the nectar's red color is derived from a previously undescribed alkaloid termed nesocodin. The first nectar produced is acidic and pale yellow in color, but slowly becomes alkaline before taking on its characteristic red color. Three enzymes secreted into the nectar are either necessary

Towards an attract-and-reward strategy: evaluating nectar resources and HIPVs under laboratory conditions to enhance Aphelinus mali parasitism activity, a key parasitoid of Eriosoma lanigerum.

BACKGROUND: The attract-and-reward strategy involves attracting natural enemies using volatile compounds or insectary plants and rewarding them with refuge and food sources. Plants with accessible nectar and early bloom together with herbivore-induced plant volatiles, such as phenylacetaldehyde (Pal) and methyl salicylate (MeSA), could enhance populations of Aphelinus mali Haldeman (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a main parasitoid of Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausmann) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). RESULTS: The extrafloral nectary plant species Euphorbia segetalis was attractive to A. mali, whereas the flora

Breeding System of Jacquemontia curtisii, an Endemic Morning-Glory of Pine Rocklands.

The pine rocklands of southern Florida are a globally imperiled ecosystem, and as a result many species endemic to this habitat are endangered or threatened. To help conserve the endemic plants of the imperiled pine rockland habitat in southern Florida, it is important to understand factors that influence their successful reproduction. Field-collected individuals of Jacquemontia curtisii Peter ex Hallier f. (Convolvulaceae), a threatened species of perennial herb, were grown in a greenhouse to control conditions for floral measurements and hand-pollinations. While flowering lasts for months, i

Floral humidity as a reliable sensory cue for profitability assessment by nectar-foraging hawkmoths.

Most research on plant-pollinator communication has focused on sensory and behavioral responses to relatively static cues. Floral rewards such as nectar, however, are dynamic, and foraging animals will increase their energetic profit if they can make use of floral cues that more accurately indicate nectar availability. Here we document such a cue--transient humidity gradients--using the night blooming flowers of Oenothera cespitosa (Onagraceae). The headspace of newly opened flowers reaches levels of about 4% above ambient relative humidity due to additive evapotranspirational water loss throu

How pollinator movement patterns emerge from the interaction between cognition and the environment.

Nectar-feeding insects, birds and mammals develop complex foraging patterns, such as repetitive multi-destination routes known as 'traplines'. While this behaviour likely influences animals' foraging success and plant mating patterns, its drivers and prevalence across species and environments remain poorly understood. Through a systematic literature review, we show that pollinators display varying degrees of movement repetitiveness. Then, using a cognitively realistic agent-based model that we parametrized with data from bee foraging studies, we demonstrate how the interplay between cognition,

Spatial partitioning of floral volatiles provides a "chemosensory roadmap" for bumblebee pollinators.

How do plants with structurally complex flowers promote effective pollination? From the pollinator's perspective, complex flowers can be reimagined as mechanical puzzles that require the manipulation of a 3D object in search of a concealed reward.1 The spatial partitioning of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within flowers may help flower-naive pollinators to successfully complete such puzzles, thereby increasing their foraging proficiency and, from the plant's perspective, promoting flower constancy and pollination efficiency.2,3 Here, we construct "chemosensory roadmaps" for Impatiens capen

Microbial diversity in the floral nectar of seven Epipactis (Orchidaceae) species.

Floral nectar of animal-pollinated plants is commonly infested with microorganisms, yet little is known about the microorganisms inhabiting the floral nectar of orchids. In this study, we investigated microbial communities occurring in the floral nectar of seven Epipactis (Orchidaceae) species. Culturable bacteria and yeasts were isolated and identified by partially sequencing the small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene and the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene, respectively. Using three different culture media, we found that bacteria were common inhabitants of the flora

Warming-driven shifts in floral traits generate flower-pollinator size mismatch and decrease reproductive output.

Plant-pollinator interactions are essential for maintaining pollination services but may be sensitive to disruption from climate change. Higher temperatures can reduce flower size, nectar availability, and other floral traits, and shorten pollinator tongue and increase body size. This could, in turn, reduce flower-pollinator size matching, leading to difficulties accessing nectar and effectively transferring pollen between flowers. However, the effects of climate change on plant-pollinator trait matching are rarely experimentally tested. We conducted a 2-year simulated warming experiment and a

Pyrethroids and Nectar Toxins Have Subtle Effects on the Motor Function, Grooming and Wing Fanning Behaviour of Honeybees (Apis mellifera).

Sodium channels, found ubiquitously in animal muscle cells and neurons, are one of the main target sites of many naturally-occurring, insecticidal plant compounds and agricultural pesticides. Pyrethroids, derived from compounds found only in the Asteraceae, are particularly toxic to insects and have been successfully used as pesticides including on flowering crops that are visited by pollinators. Pyrethrins, from which they were derived, occur naturally in the nectar of some flowering plant species. We know relatively little about how such compounds--i.e., compounds that target sodium channels

Endophytic bacteria in Camellia reticulata pedicels: isolation, screening and analysis of antagonistic activity against nectar yeasts.

Camellia reticulata, an ancient plant species endemic to Yunnan Province, China, remains underexplored in terms of its endophytic bacterial communities. The plant tissue pedicel serves as the connection between the flower and the stem, not only delivers nutrients but also transmits metabolic substances from endophytic bacteria to the nectar during long-term microbial colonization and probably improves the antagonistic activity of nectar against yeast. Hence, 138 isolates of endophytic bacteria have been isolated in this study from the pedicels of 12- and 60-year-old C. reticulata. Comparative

Do nectary morphology, anatomy, and nectar production differ between two Salvia taxa with contrasting floral traits and floral visitor assemblages?

Floral nectaries are specialized structures that secrete nectar, a key floral reward mediating plant-pollinator interactions. Although floral morphology and nectar traits have been moderately studied in Salvia, the detailed structure and anatomy of nectaries remain less explored, limiting our understanding of their diversity and functional variation. This study compares the nectary accessibility, morphology, anatomy, and nectar production of two Salvia taxa with different floral traits and floral visitor assemblages: S. uliginosa and the the sterile hybrid cultivar S. 'Amistad'. Both possess a

How do honeyeaters drink nectar?

We investigated the kinematics and biomechanics of nectar feeding in five species of honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae, Acanthagenys rufogularis, Ptilotula penicillata, Certhionyx variegatus, Manorina flavigula). There is abundant information on honeyeater foraging behaviors and ecological relationships with plants, but there has never been an examination of their nectar-feeding from kinematic and biomechanical perspectives. We analyzed high-speed video of feeding in captive individuals to describe the kinematics of their nectar feeding, with specific focus on describing tongue movement

Contrasting effects of the alkaloid ricinine on the capacity of Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles coluzzii to transmit Plasmodium falciparum.

BACKGROUND: Besides feeding on blood, females of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae sensu lato readily feed on natural sources of plant sugars. The impact of toxic secondary phytochemicals contained in plant-derived sugars on mosquito physiology and the development of Plasmodium parasites remains elusive. The focus of this study was to explore the influence of the alkaloid ricinine, found in the nectar of the castor bean Ricinus communis, on the ability of mosquitoes to transmit Plasmodium falciparum. METHODS: Females of Anopheles gambiae and its sibling species Anopheles coluzzii were expo

Honey flower dermatitis: Contact allergy to ellagic acid in Melianthuscomosus.

A case study is reported whereby a patient with no prior allergies developed a strong and spreading delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to Melianthus plants, nectar and synthetic pigment derived from it after frequent handling of these substances. The lesions improved after treatment with topical steroids and allergen avoidance within 1-2 weeks. Subsequent patch testing with the plants, nectar and synthetic ingredients identified ellagic acid (EA) as the sensitizing agent. This is the first proven case of allergic contact dermatitis to EA, a phenolic substance present in numerous plants, fr

Floral nectary and osmophore of Epipactis helleborine (L.) Crantz (Orchidaceae).

The analysis of flowers collected at different stages of anthesis provides strong evidence to conclude that the shell-shaped hypochile and the knobs of epichile form a nectary. The scent comes from the aromatic constituents of nectar and the epichile tissue and the apices of all tepals (osmophores). The comparison between pollinated and unpollinated flowers revealed that the anthesis of unpollinated flowers lasted up to the 16th day. The nectariferous secretory cells formed single-layered epidermis and several layers of underlying parenchyma built by small, isodiametric cells with thin walls a

Honeybees Tolerate Cyanogenic Glucosides from Clover Nectar and Flowers.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) pollinate flowers and collect nectar from many important crops. White clover (Trifolium repens) is widely grown as a temperate forage crop, and requires honeybee pollination for seed set. In this study, using a quantitative LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) assay, we show that the cyanogenic glucosides linamarin and lotaustralin are present in the leaves, sepals, petals, anthers, and nectar of T. repens. Cyanogenic glucosides are generally thought to be defense compounds, releasing toxic hydrogen cyanide upon degradation. However, increasing evidence in

The evolution of flower-pollinator trait matching, and why do some alpine gingers appear to be mismatched?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Morphological matching between flower and pollinator traits has been documented in diverse plant lineages. Indeed, the matching of corolla tube length and pollinator tongue length has been cited repeatedly as a classic case of coevolution. However, there are many possible evolutionary routes to trait matching. Our aim here is both to review the evolutionary mechanisms of plant-pollinator trait matching and to investigate a specific case of trait matching/mismatching in a genus of alpine gingers. METHODS: Roscoea gingers with long corolla tubes in the western Himalayas hav

More flowers, more pollinators, less fruit: drought increases insect visitation but reduces yield in cucumber.

Climate change intensifies drought frequency, posing risks to pollinators both directly and indirectly through changes in floral resource availability. We tested how water limitation alters pollinator-relevant floral traits, visitation, and plant reproductive outcomes in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) using an outdoor field experiment with conventional and drought-tolerant cucumber cultivars. We manipulated water availability (well-watered vs. water-limited) and quantified floral display, nectar rewards, and pollinator visitation during two sampling periods eight days after treatment onset.
