Pathological findings of Japanese Black Cattle living in the restricted area of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, 2013-2016.

Fifty-one Japanese black cattle from four farms in the evacuation zone of the Fukushima nuclear accident were examined pathologically during the period, 2013-2016. We found no evidence of a radiation effect on pathological findings in any of these autopsy cases, although nine cases (3.7%) of enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) and three cases (1.2%) of goiter were diagnosed. Estimated integrating dose of external exposure in EBL cases ranged from a maximum of 1200 mSv to a minimum of 72 mSv. Clinically, five cases showed wobble, dysstasia or paralysis. Exophthalmos was observed in three cases. Macr

Photosensitivity in South Africa. IV. Pathological changes in the liver in ovine photosensitivity caused by the plant Asaemia axillaris (Thunb.) Harv. Ex Jackson.

Hepatic lesions in 4 field cases of ovine hepatogenous photosensitization caused by the plant, Asaemia axillaris (Thunb.) Harv. Ex Jackson, are described. The liver was usually swollen, friable and yellowish-brown, with distinct lobulation. Microscopically, the lesions ranged from peripheral coagulative necrosis in 1 animal to others with scattered single cell or small foci of necrosis as well as hepatocellular degeneration and unrest, ductular proliferation, portal fibroplasia and cholestasis. The liver lesions are compared with those of previously reported experimental cases of A. axillaris

Pathological characteristics of thyroid glands from Japanese Black Cattle living in the restricted area of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

To study the effect of ionizing radiation on thyroid glands, 66 Japanese Black cattle residing in the restricted area of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2013-2017 were pathologically examined. There were no clinical symptoms of thyroid disease in these cattle. Three cases of goiter and seven of atrophy were found in two among the four farms examined. Cases of goiter exhibited normal morphological structure without mass or nodule formation in thyroid glands. Cellular atypia or capsular invasion of the follicular epithelium was absent. The estimated integrated dose of external radia

Modern Taxonomy as the Foundation for Identifying and Managing Fungal and Fungus-Like Plant Pathogens.

Reliable, up-to-date fungal and oomycete taxonomy underpins every aspect of plant pathology by enabling accurate pathogen identification, robust host-range analyses, clear assessment of geographic spread, and the development of effective disease management strategies. Yet, despite major advances in systematics and molecular phylogenetics, the integration and use of current names in applied plant pathology remains inconsistent. We discuss best practices for accurate identification, combining morphology, molecular data, and phylogenetic frameworks, and examine challenges arising from the use of

Evaluation of Plant Ceramide Species-Induced Exosome Release from Neuronal Cells and Exosome Loading Using Deuterium Chemistry.

The extracellular accumulation of aggregated amyloid-β (Aβ) in the brain leads to the early pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The administration of exogenous plant-type ceramides into AD model mice can promote the release of neuronal exosomes, a subtype of extracellular vesicles, that can mediate Aβ clearance. In vitro studies showed that the length of fatty acids in mammalian-type ceramides is crucial for promoting neuronal exosome release. Therefore, investigating the structures of plant ceramides is important for evaluating the potential in releasing exosomes to remove Aβ. In this stud

Plant Dermatitis.

Plant dermatitis is a common pathology that plagues those who work and recreate in the North American outdoors. The most common plant family to cause dermatitis is the Toxicodendron genus, which includes the plants known by the common names of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. While mortality is usually quite low for this pathology, the incidence and prevalence of the disease leads to substantial healthcare burden and financial implications across the population. The mainstays of treatment have focused on prevention, corticosteroids, and antihistamines.

Effects of plant-derived dietary antioxidants on Alzheimer's disease: Focus on ferroptosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia in older individuals. Ferroptosis, a programmed cell death characterized by iron-dependent membrane lipid peroxida-tion is implicated in AD pathology. Increasing evidences have shown that plant-derived dietary antioxidants exhibit their anti-ferroptosis activity. However, the anti-AD mechanism of plant-derived dietary antioxidants remains elusive. Therefore, this review aims to explore the anti-AD effects of plant-derived dietary antioxidants via ferroptosis regulation. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: This re

Perianal Pulse Granuloma Induced by Plant-Derived Baby Wipes.

Pulse granulomas are unusual foreign body reactions to exogenous plant material, featuring the presence of hyaline ring structures and granulomatous inflammation. Pulse granulomas have been reported to occur in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory tract. Cutaneous pulse granulomas are exceedingly rare. All reported cases have been closely associated with underlying pathology such as chronic inflammatory conditions, trauma, or surgical procedures which likely facilitated implantation of exogenous plant material. We report a novel case of a cutaneous pulse granuloma presentin

Research progress in the molecular mechanism of ferroptosis in Parkinson's disease and regulation by natural plant products.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system after Alzheimer's disease. The current understanding of PD focuses mainly on the loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra region of the midbrain, which is attributed to factors such as oxidative stress, alpha-synuclein aggregation, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. These factors together contribute to the PD phenotype. Recent studies on PD pathology have introduced a new form of cell death known as ferroptosis. Pathological changes closely linked with ferroptos

An LED-based UV-B irradiation system for tiny organisms: System description and demonstration experiment to determine the hatchability of eggs from four Tetranychus spider mite species from Okinawa.

We developed a computer-based system for controlling the photoperiod and irradiance of UV-B and white light from a 5×5 light-emitting diode (LED) matrix (100×100mm). In this system, the LED matrix was installed in each of four irradiation boxes and controlled by pulse-width modulators so that each box can independently emit UV-B and white light at irradiances of up to 1.5 and 4.0Wm(-2), respectively, or a combination of both light types. We used this system to examine the hatchabilities of the eggs of four Tetranychus spider mite species (T. urticae, T. kanzawai, T. piercei and T. okinawanus)

Pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury: An overview of oxidative stress and plant-based therapeutic approaches.

Stroke is a debilitating neurological disorder that causes substantial morbidity and mortality on a global scale. Ischemic stroke, the most common type, occurs when the brain's blood supply is interrupted. Oxidative stress is a key factor in stroke pathology, contributing to inflammation and neuronal cell death. As a result, there is increasing interest in the potential of plant extracts, which have been used in traditional medicine for centuries and are generally considered safe, to serve as alternative or complementary treatments for stroke. The plant extracts can target multiple pathologica

SWM dataset: A large-scale annotated benchmark for Sclerotinia sclerotiorum object detection in white mold management.

Computer vision enables automated, accurate plant disease scouting, especially for diseases with patchy field distributions and lifecycles that begin in the soil and evolve across soil and plants. This is the case for the soilborne fungal pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the causal agent of white mold in over 400 hosts, such as common bean, soybean, cotton, sunflower, canola, and tobacco, threatening sustainable agriculture on all continents. There are image datasets focused on plant disease detection, including the Plant Disease Database (PDDB) and PlantDoc, which cover a large range of pla

Genomics in plant pathogen identification and control.

Recent advances in genomics have revolutionized plant pathogen detection and control by enabling faster and more accurate identification compared to traditional culture-based methods. Genomic tools like metagenomics and next generation sequencing (NGS) facilitate the detection of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and nematodes) directly from environmental samples. Genomics also provides information on plant-pathogen interactions, especially the detection of Resistance (R) genes and their role in plant defense against pathogens, aiding in the development of genetic markers for breeding

A plant-based repellent protects against Tunga penetrans infestation and sand flea disease.

Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease prevalent in impoverished populations in the tropics and associated with considerable morbidity. Treatment options are limited and prophylaxis has never been attempted. We assessed the effectiveness of a plant-based repellent to prevent infestation with Tunga penetrans and sand flea disease in an urban squatter settlement in Fortaleza, Northeast Brazil. Two cohorts were formed. One cohort started with the intervention while another served as control. The plant-based repellent Zanzarin was applied twice daily on the skin of the feet. After 4 weeks and a was
