Oxidative storm in a patient with acute rotenone-containing plant poisoning.

A 64-year-old woman presented with coma, seizure, and lactic acidosis after ingesting 80 yam bean seeds. This rotenone-containing seeds cause cellular asphyxia via blockage of the mitochondrial electron transport. Subsequent oxidative stress results in the formation of lipid peroxidation (LPO). Rotenone analysis via liquid chromatography mass spectrometry revealed the following: 31,590 ng/mL in cooked yam bean seed and 100 ng/mL in the blood. We attempted to use N-acetylcysteine to alleviate oxidative stress and documented the continuous decline in the plasma concentration of LPO.

Electrochemical evaluation of plant extracts as potential antidotes for acetaminophen poisoning.

Acetaminophen, a widely used analgesic, causes severe liver damage in overdose situations due to N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPQI), a toxic metabolic intermediate. Current antidotes, like N-acetylcysteine (NAC), are effective but costly and not universally accessible. There is a critical need for novel, cost-effective antidotes to mitigate acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity. This study investigates the electrochemical oxidation of acetaminophen in the presence of plant extracts, including pomegranate peel, pomegranate, bell pepper, black radish, and turnip, to evaluate their potential as

Poisonous plants weaken plant-microbe-fauna trait networks across temperature and precipitation gradients.

Trait-based ecology provides a mechanistic framework for predicting how species and trophic interactions respond to environmental change, yet cross-trophic trait linkages remain poorly understood. We investigated how the expansion of poisonous plants reshapes functional traits of plants, soil microbes, and soil fauna along climatic gradients on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and how these shifts affect multitrophic trait networks and ecosystem complexity. To address this, we quantified 36 functional traits covering plants, bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and mites from 150 plots at 15 sites spanning a

Macrocyclic trichothecenes: cause of livestock poisoning by the Brazilian plant Baccharis coridifolia.

Nine macrocyclic trichothecenes, thought to cause toxic effects in herbivors, were isolated from the Brazilian shrub Baccharis coridifolia. The structures of two new components, named miophytocene A and B, are described. Structure analysis was mainly accomplished by application of two-dimensional Fourier transform NMR techniques. The trichothecenes are most likely produced by the soil fungus Myrothecium verrucaria, which was isolated from soil samples around B. coridifolia. It is concluded that the plant is able to absorb and accumulate these mycotoxins. Histopathological studies on rabbits wh

A gene horizontally transferred from bacteria protects arthropods from host plant cyanide poisoning.

Cyanogenic glucosides are among the most widespread defense chemicals of plants. Upon plant tissue disruption, these glucosides are hydrolyzed to a reactive hydroxynitrile that releases toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Yet many mite and lepidopteran species can thrive on plants defended by cyanogenic glucosides. The nature of the enzyme known to detoxify HCN to β-cyanoalanine in arthropods has remained enigmatic. Here we identify this enzyme by transcriptome analysis and functional expression. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the gene is a member of the cysteine synthase family horizontally tran

A case of fatal poisoning with the aconite plant: quantitative analysis in biological fluid.

In recent years recorded cases of plant poisoning have become rare, this may in part be due to the possibility of plant ingestion not being indicated at the beginning of an investigation. Aconitum napellus (aconite, Wolfsbane, Monkshood) is one of the most poisonous plants in the UK. It contains various potent alkaloids such as aconitine, isoaconitine, lycaconitine and napelline. Ingestion of Aconitum plant extracts can result in severe, potentially fatal toxic effects. This paper describes the analytical findings in a recent death in the UK. resulting from deliberate ingestion of Aconitum nap

Plant dermatitis. Possible culprits go far beyond poison ivy.

Given the variety of existing plant species in the environment, it is remarkable that people have adjusted as well as they have to the many plants that can cause uncomfortable skin reactions. With a basic understanding of the types of reaction and the common plants that cause each type, physicians can help patients discover the source of the dermatitis and thus prevent reexposure. In immediate contact dermatitis, welts form rapidly after patients brush against an offending plant, but the urticarial rash is short-lived. In irritant contact dermatitis, the skin is traumatized mechanically (eg, w

Quinolizidine and piperidine alkaloid teratogens from poisonous plants and their mechanism of action in animals.

Quinolizidine and piperidine alkaloid teratogens from Lupinus, Conium, and Nicotiana genera have been identified as causes of birth defects in livestock induced by poisonous plants. Many defects now known to be related to poisonous plant ingestion were once thought to have a genetic origin. This supposition delayed diagnosis, reporting, and understanding of such birth defects, because breeders and producers feared the news would make it difficult to sell breeding stock. Defects caused by quinolizidine and piperidine teratogens include cleft palate and contracture-type skeletal defects such as

Human exposure to toxic plants is a global concern, with numerous reported cases of accidental poisoning. In this study, a patient experienced poisoning after inadvertently consuming an herbal preparation preserved in alcohol. The patient exhibited characteristic electrocardiogram abnormalities, prompting further investigation into the toxic plant responsible. A relative provided the suspected herbal sample for identification. Symptomatic treatment was administered, successfully stabilizing the patient. Given the suspicion of aconitine toxicity-despite the absence of naturally occurring Aconit

Lantana camara poisoning in cattle that took refuge during a storm in a forest invaded by this plant.

An outbreak of poisoning by Lantana camara occurred in cattle when a herd sought refuge in a Eucalyptus forest heavily infested by this plant. The animals showed apathy, elevated serum activities of hepatic enzymes, severe photosensitivity, jaundice, hepatomegaly and nephrosis. After a clinical manifestation period of 2-15 days, 74 out of 170 heifers died. The main histological changes were random hepatocellular necrosis, cholestasis, biliary proliferation and, in one animal, centrilobular necrosis. Immunostaining for Caspase 3 detected scattered apoptotic hepatocytes.
