Synergistic Effects of Melatonin and Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid on Protection of Photosynthesis System in Response to Multiple Abiotic Stressors.

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and melatonin are endogenous compounds that enhance plant responses to abiotic stresses. The response of Vicia faba to different stressors (salinity (NaCl), poly ethylene glycol (PEG), and sulfur dioxide (SO2)) was studied after priming with sole application of GABA and melatonin or their co-application (GABA + melatonin). Both melatonin and GABA and their co-application increased leaf area, number of flowers, shoot dry and fresh weight, and total biomass. Plants treated with GABA, melatonin, and GABA + melatonin developed larger stomata with wider aperture compa

Generalized hydromechanical model for stomatal responses to hydraulic perturbations.

Stomata respond in a common pattern to various hydraulic perturbations on any part of the 'soil-plant-air' system: initial transient 'wrong-way' responses and final stationary 'right-way' responses. In order to describe this pattern on the basis of statistical physics, we propose a simple model where turgor pressure of a cell is taken to be a power function of its volume, and obtain results in qualitative agreement with experimental data for responses to a variety of hydraulic perturbations: Firstly, stationary stomatal conductance as a function of the vapor pressure deficit divides into three

The mechanism of SO2 -induced stomatal closure differs from O3 and CO2 responses and is mediated by nonapoptotic cell death in guard cells.

Plants closing stomata in the presence of harmful gases is believed to be a stress avoidance mechanism. SO2 , one of the major airborne pollutants, has long been reported to induce stomatal closure, yet the mechanism remains unknown. Little is known about the stomatal response to airborne pollutants besides O3 . SLOW ANION CHANNEL-ASSOCIATED 1 (SLAC1) and OPEN STOMATA 1 (OST1) were identified as genes mediating O3 -induced closure. SLAC1 and OST1 are also known to mediate stomatal closure in response to CO2 , together with RESPIRATORY BURST OXIDASE HOMOLOGs (RBOHs). The overlaying roles of the

The effect of induced polyploidy on phytochemistry, cellular organelles and the expression of genes involved in thymol and carvacrol biosynthetic pathway in thyme (Thymus vulgaris).

Induced polyploidy usually results in larger vegetative and reproductive plant organs. In order to study the effect of chromosome doubling on Thymus vulgaris, three levels of colchicine concentration including 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5% (w/v) were applied for 6, 12 and 24 hours on apical meristem of 2- and 4-leaf seedlings. Ploidy level was evaluated by flow cytometry and microscopic chromosome counting. Chemical composition of essential oils extracted by hydro-distillation was analyzed by gas Chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas Chromatography (GC). The application of 0.3% colchicine at 4-

Stomatal and leaf hydraulic conductivity responses to changing light and CO2 conditions in Phaseolus vulgaris.

Extreme conditions brought up by climate change have a negative impact on plant photosynthesis. However, characterizing and exploiting extant genetic variation in plants for structure and function could lead to the assembly of genotypes adapted to extreme environments. This could be accomplished by combining suitable structures and adaptive mechanisms. We selected two common bean genotypes from the Andean (Calima) and the Mesoamerican (Jamapa) gene pools and analyzed their leaf structural characteristics, leaf hydraulics, and stomatal responses to transient light and CO2. We used the patterns

Quantifying photosynthetic restrictions.

Quantifying the effect of factors controlling CO2 assimilation is crucial for understanding plant functions and developing strategies to improve productivity. Methods exist in numerous variants and produce various indicators, such as limitations, contributions, and sensitivity, often causing confusion. Simplifications and common mistakes lead to overrating the importance of diffusion-whether across stomata or the mesophyll. This work develops a consistent set of definitions that integrates all previous methods, offering a generalised framework for quantifying restrictions. Ten worked examples

Chinese pine seedling, which age is 87 days, are exposed to SO2 in three treatments for 60 days from July 1, 2002 to August 29, 2002. In treatment 1 and treatment 2, the concentration of SO2 were 0.1 mg x m(-3) and 0.2 mg x m(-3), respectively. In treatment 3, the concentration of SO2 were 0.5 mg x m(-3) for 6 hours and 0.1 mg x m(-3) for 18 hours per day. In treatment 1, the abnormity of stomata guard cell and leaf colour are not observed. There are no significant difference of chlorophyll content, carotenoid content of leaf, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, relative growth rate, and

Genetic markers of stomatal cluster development in Begoniaceae revealed through trait analysis assisted by interactive deep-learning.

Stomata of plants track the immediate demand for carbon dioxide for photosynthesis while limiting transpirational water loss. Solitary stomatal patterns are common, yet some land plants develop noncontiguous stomatal clustering, where 2 or more stomata occur in groups and overlay a single air cavity. Clustering improves stomatal efficiency, reduces plant water use, and increases resilience to environment stress. How cluster development and physiology interact and integrate with the environment are open questions. Here we used TESSERA, a deep-learning platform for stomatal detection with an int

Sequence and function of basic helix-loop-helix proteins required for stomatal development in Arabidopsis are deeply conserved in land plants.

Stomata are a broadly conserved feature of land plants with a crucial role regulating transpiration and gas exchange between the plant and atmosphere. Stereotyped cell divisions within a specialized cell lineage of the epidermis generate stomata and define the pattern of their distribution. The behavior of the stomatal lineage varies in its detail among different plant groups, but general features include asymmetric cell divisions and an immediate precursor (the guard mother cell [GMC]) that divides symmetrically to form the pair of cells that will differentiate into the guard cells. In Arabid

Stomatal aperture, VPD and transpiration - The chicken or the egg?

Stomata regulate gas exchange and water loss by closing in response to high vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Yet, it remains unclear whether stomata directly sense external conditions (e.g., relative humidity [RH] or temperature) or instead respond to internal changes associated with VPD (e.g., transpiration rate [E] or water status). Moreover, the stomatal response to VPD integrates both passive hydraulic and active metabolic mechanisms and involves inherent coupling between E and RH, which complicates our understanding of stomatal signal perception and response. In addition, recent findings cha

Study of Camellia sinensis diploid and triploid leaf development mechanism based on transcriptome and leaf characteristics.

Polyploidization results in significant changes in the morphology and physiology of plants, with increased growth rate and genetic gains as the number of chromosomes increases. In this study, the leaf functional traits, photosynthetic characteristics, leaf cell structure and transcriptome of Camellia sinensis were analyzed. The results showed that triploid tea had a significant growth advantage over diploid tea, the leaf area was 59.81% larger, and the photosynthetic capacity was greater. The morphological structure of triploid leaves was significantly different, the xylem of the veins was mor

PLANT SUCCESS: The consequence of the hysteretic responses of leaves to ambient water vapor, carbon dioxide, light intensity, and temperature.

Plants account for the vast majority of the biomass on land. They first appear in the fossil record many millions of years ago. Some researchers have proposed that the obvious success of plant-life indicates that plants are "intelligent." Plant intelligence has been strongly challenged, however, because plants do not possess brain-like tissues similar to electrical neurons, axons, and synapses. The following paper argues that a plant leaf is more properly understood as being a kind of analog computer called a "crossbar array." The leaf's computational facility arises from how leaf stomata resp

Generalized Stomatal Optimization of Evolutionary Fitness Proxies for Predicting Plant Gas Exchange Under Drought, Heatwaves, and Elevated CO2.

Stomata control plant water loss and photosynthetic carbon gain. Developing more generalized and accurate stomatal models is essential for earth system models and predicting responses under novel environmental conditions associated with global change. Plant optimality theories offer one promising approach, but most such theories assume that stomatal conductance maximizes photosynthetic net carbon assimilation subject to some cost or constraint of water. We move beyond this approach by developing a new, generalized optimality theory of stomatal conductance, optimizing any non-foliar proxy that

Plant immune responses - from guard cells and local responses to systemic defense against bacterial pathogens.

When plants are infected by pathogens two distinct responses can occur, the early being a local response in the infected area, and later a systemic response in non-infected tissues. Closure of stomata has recently been found to be a local response to bacterial pathogens. Stomata closure is linked to both salicylic acid (SA), an essential hormone in local responses and systemic acquired resistance (SAR), and absisic acid (ABA) a key regulator of drought and other abiotic stresses. SAR reduces the effects of later infections. In this review we discuss recent research elucidating the role of guar

Limited Regulation of Canopy Water Use Efficiency by Stomatal Behavior Under Drought Propagation.

Water use efficiency (WUE) is a critical ecosystem function and a key indicator of vegetation responses to drought, yet its temporal trajectories and underlying drivers during drought propagation remain insufficiently understood. Here, we examined the trajectories, interdependencies and drivers of multidimensional WUE metrics and their components (gross primary production (GPP), evapotranspiration, transpiration (T), and canopy conductance (Gc)) using a conceptual drought propagation framework. We found that even though the carbon assimilation efficiency per stomata increases during drought, t

Mitochondrial H2S donor AP39 induces stomatal closure by modulating guard cell mitochondrial activity.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signaling molecule involved in numerous physiological processes in plants, including gas exchange with the environment through the regulation of stomatal pore width. Guard cells (GCs) are pairs of specialized epidermal cells that delimit stomatal pores and have a higher mitochondrial density and metabolic activity than their neighboring cells. However, there is no clear evidence on the role of mitochondrial activity in stomatal closure induction. In this work, we showed that the mitochondrial-targeted H2S donor AP39 induces stomatal closure in a dose-depende

H2S aids osmotic stress resistance by S-sulfhydration of melatonin production-related enzymes in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Hydrogen sulfide closed Arabidopsis thaliana stomata by increasing the transcription of melatonin-producing enzymes and the post-translational modification levels to combat osmotic stress. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and melatonin (MEL) reportedly have similar functions in many aspects of plant growth, development and stress response. They regulate stomatal movement and enhance drought resistance. However, their physiological relationship is not well understood. Here, their crosstalk involved in osmotic stress resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana was studied. Exogenous H2S and MEL closed stomata unde

Evolutionary tuning of the molecular charge state of UBP24 shapes responses to high temperature.

Protein evolution is shaped by sequence variation that modulates protein properties-for example, through the gain or loss of post-translational modifications. Among these, reversible phosphorylation alters a protein's overall electrical charge and enables organisms to dynamically respond to environmental fluctuations. In plants, the hydro-active opening of stomata, microscopic pores that regulate gas exchange and leaf temperature, is governed by phosphorylation-dependent signalling. Here we identify a mechanism involving the deubiquitylase UBIQUITIN-SPECIFIC PROTEASE 24 (UBP24) that promotes s

When the night is not long enough: soil drying constrains nighttime tree rehydration, setting a physical limit to stomatal regulation.

Plants are often assumed to optimize carbon assimilation against water loss through stomatal regulation, responding instantaneously to varying atmospheric demand and soil water supply. However, a growing body of work highlights the importance of nighttime recovery processes for understanding plant water use, yet nighttime processes are not considered in existing supply-demand models. Here, we extend an existing supply-demand model by including flux imbalances between atmospheric demand and soil supply buffered by plant water storage. The flux imbalances accumulate during the day and are compen
