Endophytic bacteria in toxic South African plants: identification, phylogeny and possible involvement in gousiekte.

BACKGROUND: South African plant species of the genera Fadogia, Pavetta and Vangueria (all belonging to Rubiaceae) are known to cause gousiekte (literally 'quick disease'), a fatal cardiotoxicosis of ruminants characterised by acute heart failure four to eight weeks after ingestion. Noteworthy is that all these plants harbour endophytes in their leaves: nodulating bacteria in specialized nodules in Pavetta and non-nodulating bacteria in the intercellular spaces between mesophyll cells in Fadogia and Vangueria. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Isolation and analyses of these endophytes reveal the presence o

Toxic Plants and Their Impact on Livestock Health and Economic Losses: A Comprehensive Review.

Plants are important components in sustaining the life of humans and animals, balancing ecosystems, providing animal feed and edible food for human consumption, and serving as sources of traditional and modern medicine. However, plants can be harmful to both animals and humans when ingested, leading to poisoning regardless of the quantity consumed. This presents significant risks to livestock health and can impede economic growth. In several developing countries, including Ethiopia, traditional communities have depended on medicinal plants for treating livestock and human diseases. The inciden

Gene duplications circumvent trade-offs in enzyme function: Insect adaptation to toxic host plants.

Herbivorous insects and their adaptations against plant toxins provide striking opportunities to investigate the genetic basis of traits involved in coevolutionary interactions. Target site insensitivity to cardenolides has evolved convergently across six orders of insects, involving identical substitutions in the Na,K-ATPase gene and repeated convergent gene duplications. The large milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus, has three copies of the Na,K-ATPase α-subunit gene that bear differing numbers of amino acid substitutions in the binding pocket for cardenolides. To analyze the effect of these

Microbial assisted alleviation of nickel toxicity in plants: A review.

Nickel (Ni) is required in trace amounts (less than 500 µg kg-1) in plants to regulate metabolic processes, the immune system, and to act as an enzymatic catalytic cofactor. Conversely, when nickel is present in high concentration, it is considered as a toxic substance. Excessive human nickel exposure occurs through ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact, ultimately leading to respiratory, cardiovascular, and chronic kidney diseases. Due to anthropogenic activities, the nickel concentrations in various environmental scenarios have progressively risen to levels as high as 26,000 ppm in soil an

Multiple stresses occurring with boron toxicity and deficiency in plants.

Boron (B), an essential nutrient for plants, participates in many physiological processes, with emphasis its role in the formation of the plant's cell wall. In soil, the range between deficiency and toxicity of B is very narrow as compared to other nutrients, which makes its management in agriculture very difficult, as it depends on the soil and environmental conditions. B stress simultaneously acts with others (extreme temperatures, excess of light, high concentration of CO2, drought, salinity or heavy metal contamination, etc.). The effects of these other stresses could increase the sensitiv

Mercury toxicity, molecular response and tolerance in higher plants.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in soils has become a great concern as a result of its natural release and anthropogenic activities. This review presents broad aspects of our recent understanding of mercury contamination and toxicology in plants including source of Hg contamination, toxicology, tolerant regulation in plants, and minimization strategy. We first introduced the sources of mercury contamination in soils. Mercury exists in different forms, but ionic mercury (Hg(2+)) is the predominant form in soils and readily absorbed by plants. The second issue to be discussed is the uptake, transport

Cruciferous plants: phytochemical toxicity versus cancer chemoprotection.

The Cruciferae (also known as the Brassicaceae) are the family of plants that include the various familiar members of the species Brassica oleracea (e.g., broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts) as well as many other plants that are widely consumed in various parts of the world. Forage and root brassicas are widely used as winter feeds for cattle and sheep. A striking and characteristic chemical property of cruciferous plants is their high content of glucosinolates (more than 120 types), which often approaches 1% or more of their dry weight. The interest devoted to this group o

Jimson weed toxicity: management of anticholinergic plant ingestion.

Jimson weed is a hallucinogenic plant that is common in rural areas. Consumption of any part of the plant can result in severe anticholinergic toxicity. The clinical presentation of jimson weed toxicity is similar to that seen in cases of atropine poisoning. Treatment is aimed at removing plant material from the gastrointestinal tract, keeping the patient safe and reversing severe anticholinergic sequelae.

Cadmium toxicity in plants: from transport to tolerance mechanisms.

Cadmium (Cd), a non-essential heavy metal, induces severe phytotoxicity through oxidative stress and cellular homeostasis disruption. Chronic Cd exposure inhibits plant growth via leaf chlorosis, stunted stem elongation, and impaired root architecture, while disrupting physiological functions through chlorophyll degradation, membrane peroxidation, and antioxidant system collapse. This review systematically investigates plant adaptive responses to Cd stress. It examines the processes of Cd uptake pathways, translocation dynamics, physiological toxicity, and molecular defense mechanisms. Key fin

An overview of plant-based interventions to ameliorate arsenic toxicity.

The industrial and technological advancements in the world have also contributed to the rapid deterioration in the environment quality through introduction of obnoxious pollutants that threaten to destroy the subtle balance in the ecosystem. The environment contaminants cause severe adverse effects to humans, flora and fauna that are mostly irreversible. Chief among these toxicants is arsenic, a metalloid, which is considered among the most dangerous environmental toxins that leads to various diseases which affect the quality of life even when present in small quantities. Treatment of arsenic-

Sulfite reductase protects plants against sulfite toxicity.

Plant sulfite reductase (SiR; Enzyme Commission 1.8.7.1) catalyzes the reduction of sulfite to sulfide in the reductive sulfate assimilation pathway. Comparison of SiR expression in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Rheinlands Ruhm') and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants revealed that SiR is expressed in a different tissue-dependent manner that likely reflects dissimilarity in sulfur metabolism between the plant species. Using Arabidopsis and tomato SiR mutants with modified SiR expression, we show here that resistance to ectopically applied sulfur dioxide/sulfite is a function of SiR expr

Toxic Plants Potentially Impacting the Health Status of Livestock in St. Kitts-A Surveillance Study.

Tropical regions are characterized by exceptional biodiversity, including extremely diverse flora. Many plants produce chemical compounds that function as defense mechanisms, some of which are toxic to mammals, including livestock species. However, documentation of toxic plants in the Caribbean region remains limited. The present study aimed to identify toxic and potentially toxic plant species affecting livestock on the island of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) through surveys of a representative number of farms across all nine parishes. An extensive literature review was performed in order to

Factors influencing the uptake and speciation transformation of antimony in the soil-plant system, and the redistribution and toxicity of antimony in plants.

Antimony (Sb) is not an essential element for humans and plants although it can be used to treat some human diseases, such as schistosomiasis. Sb contamination has been documented in many regions around the world, particularly in China. The Sb contamination in the environment often stems from anthropogenic activities such as mining, smelting, and shooting. Within the latest decade, great progress has been made in research examining the physiochemical behavior of Sb in the environment, including 1) the extent of Sb pollution around the world particularly in China; 2) the mechanisms and factors

Harnessing the interplay between metal toxicity and DNA methylation in plants.

Research into how plants adapt to stress through genetic and epigenetic mechanisms is a rapidly evolving field, with epigenetic flexibility serving as a critical factor for survival in heavily contaminated, high-metal environments. Cutting-edge technologies, specifically Whole Genome Bisulfite Sequencing (WGBS) and Reduced Representation Bisulfite Sequencing (RRBS), have revolutionized this area by moving beyond broad, genome-wide surveys to pinpoint specific, gene-level alterations induced by metal stress. These high-throughput methods have fundamentally transformed the landscape of environme
