INTRODUCTION: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an uncommon and aggressive large B-cell lymphoma commonly diagnosed in human immunodeficiency viruses -positive patients. Oral cavity is the most commonly PBL affected site. Most oral PBLs presented as asymptomatic swellings, frequently associated with ulcerations and bleeding. Most cases lacked B-symptoms, suggesting a more local involvement of the disease. No standard treatment is yet for oral PBL. Five-year survival rate recorded no more than 33.5%.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 39-year-old male presented to Dental Clinic with 1 month swelling of the ora

Plasmablastic lymphoma is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It is strongly associated with HIV infection, although it has been recognized in immunocompetent patients. Plasmablastic lymphoma has a predilection for the oral cavity. Its occurrence in the parotid gland has not been previously described. We report a case of an HIV positive man who developed a rapidly enlarging parotid mass. A core biopsy of the parotid mass was evaluated by routine microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization. The tumor was comprised of sheets of large cells with abundant cytoplasm, eccentric nucl

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare B-cell lymphoma occurring mainly in HIV patients. The tumor frequently involves extranodal sites such as the oral cavity, nasal cavity, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and lungs. The neoplastic cells are characterized by a plasmablastic appearance and typical immunophenotype that indicates plasma cell differentiation. Herein, we report a case of intraocular involvement by plasmablastic lymphoma in a HIV patient with a long history of cytomegalovirus retinitis and loss of vision. After an evisceration performed to control the blind, painful eye a diagnosis o

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is an indolent lymphoma that often transforms into a high-grade lymphoma, mostly diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. A case of FL suggested to transform into plasmablastic lymphoma is presented. A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of right lower abdominal pain and vomiting. Computed tomography showed a mass in the ileocecum. Colonoscopy showed a mass with an ulcer in the ascending colon, and surgery was performed. Immunohistochemical staining of the biopsied mass showed infiltrated lymphocytes that were positive for CD38, CD45, CD138, and λ chain, and neg

BACKGROUND: Plasmablastic myeloma (PBM) is a rare, aggressive subtype of multiple myeloma (MM) with poor prognosis. On the other hand, plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma with a plasmacytic phenotype. Importantly, PBM is difficult to distinguish from PBL, because clinical features of both diseases closely overlap. We report two cases of PBM accompanied by apparent extramedullary lesions.
CASE: Case 1: A 38-year-old female complained of fatigue. She presented with pancytopenia, splenomegaly, a soft tissue lesion over the chest wall, and multiple osteolytic lesions. In

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) of bone is a rare neoplasm that shares many confusing cytomorphological and immunohistochemical features with plasmablastic plasma cell myeloma (PBPCM). A 47-year-old female patient presented with a bony swelling and bone pain in the left humerus for the last 6 months. On radiological examination (x-ray and computed tomography) it appeared to be a lytic lesion, and a pathological fracture was detected. The patient was HIV-negative. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) was done from the lesion, which was inconclusive. Subsequently, incisional biopsy was taken. Histopatholog

We report the case of a middle-aged HIV-positive man who presented with proptosis and retro-ocular pain. On CT and MR imaging, a retro-orbital enhancing mass was seen, and PET/CT revealed this lesion as well as a similarly characterized mass in the nasopharynx to be hypermetabolic. Biopsy and subsequent pathological characterization revealed this mass to be plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma associated with HIV-infection. PBL is a diffuse B-cell lymphoma with characteristic cell marker patterns. The most common site of this malignancy is within the oral cavity.

Plasmablastic myeloma (PBM) is a blastic morphologic variant of plasma cell myeloma with less favorable prognosis than those with non-blastic morphology. PBM is rare, without clear-cut definition and detailed clinicopathologic features in the literature. PBM may mimic plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) as they share nearly identical morphology and immunophenotype. Using the criteria of ≥ 30% plasmablasts in tissue sections, we retrospectively recruited PBM cases and analyzed their clinical, imaging, and pathologic findings, with emphasis on extramedullary involvement. We performed immunohistochemist

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare B-cell neoplasm with an aggressive clinical behavior that predominantly occurs in the oral cavity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients. HIV-negative PBL has not been extensively reported. A 65-year-old female presented with anemia, who was HIV-negative. Gastrointestinal fiberscope (GIF), and colon fiberscope (CF) were performed. However, we could not detect the bleeding sites. We detected the tumor by capsule endoscopy, and obtained the tumor cells from the duodenal and jejunal sites. The neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for CD5

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a recently identified entity that is considered to be a type of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with a unique immunophenotype and a predilection for the oral cavity of patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although its clinical features may help in the differential diagnosis, an extraoral location in a patient without HIV makes it more difficult to suspect clinically. This case report is the first to describe a patient with PBL originating from the jejunum in a 60-yr-old, HIV-seronegative man. Computed tomography of the face, chest and abdomen show

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma with a poor prognosis and short survival rates. It is classified as a large B-cell lymphoma subtype, but carries a plasmacytic immunophenotype. Therefore, PBL has pathogenetic overlaps with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (DLBCL NOS) and plasma cell neoplasms (PCNs). Although recent studies have characterized important genetic abnormalities in PBL, the precise molecular mechanisms driving its pathogenesis remain elusive. In this study, we analyzed 607 inflammatory genes in 10 PBL, 11 DLBCL NOS/high

BACKGROUND: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) of the oral cavity is a rare, aggressive subtype of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, predominantly seen in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with chronic Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. This malignancy is closely associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), highlighting its oncogenic role.
METHODS: We present 11 cases of oral cavity PBL (OPBL) managed at our institution, detailing clinical, radiological, pathological, and therapeutic features, as well as patient outcomes. We also conducted a comprehensive literature review to synthesize cu

Intussusception in adults is a rare occurrence at approximately 5% and malignancy as the cause comprises half that number. The most common malignancies found are primary adenocarcinoma, metastatic carcinoma, lymphoma, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Lymphoma is the second most common. The management of adult intussusception is generally surgical, which is due to the higher likelihood of malignancy being the underlying cause. The patient's history helps to direct management and the most likely underlying diagnosis. This is especially important in patients who are immunosuppressed and with

We herein report the case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with persistent fever and a large mass in her right breast. Haematology, liver function, and other blood test results were abnormal. Computed tomography and positron emission tomography indicated that the lesion had spread to multiple organs. Immunohistochemical staining confirmed that the patient had plasmablastic lymphoma, an invasive and rare form of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and an underlying infection by the Epstein-Barr virus. After three rounds of CHOPE chemotherapy, followed by hyperCVAD and ESHAP, the patient achieved

Plasmablastic lymphoma is an aggressive variant of large B-cells lymphoma in which the infection by Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Epstein-Barr herpesvirus are involved. This recently denominated neoplasia has a special tropism through the oral cavity. However, its presence has been reported in the digestive tract, abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum. We describe two Human Immunodeficiency Virus infected patient cases with rectal presentation of PL in the HIV service of the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the second most common HIV-associated malignancy. This report details a case of the recently described entity plasmablastic lymphoma of the mouth in a patient who was later found to have severe HIV disease. The tumor manifested as a large ulcerated mass of the left maxillary alveolus, causing bony destruction and tooth mobility. Histologic examination of lesional tissue revealed a lymphoid tumor with a high proliferation rate containing lymphoplasmacytoid cells that were reactive to the plasma cell marker VS38c but not to CD20 or CD79a; these are features of the recen

Plasmablastic lymphoma is an aggressive neoplasm that shares many cytomorphologic and immunophenotypic features with plasmablastic plasma cell myeloma. However, plasmablastic lymphoma is listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification as a variant of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. To characterize the relationship between plasmablastic lymphoma and plasmablastic plasma cell myeloma, we performed immunohistochemistry using a large panel of B-cell and plasma cell markers on nine cases of plasmablastic lymphoma and seven cases of plasmablastic plasma cell myeloma with and without HIV/

A combined whole-exome and targeted sequencing study of 110 cases of human immunodeficiency virus-associated plasmablastic lymphomas revealed a distinct landscape of genetic lesions for this lymphoma entity, including a particular role of mutations in STAT3 and other members of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, and of the RAS family in its pathogenesis. See related article by Liu et al., p. 112.
