BACKGROUND: The anoxic redox control binary system plays an important role in the response to oxygen as a signal in the environment. In particular, phosphorylated ArcA, as a global transcription factor, binds to the promoter regions of its target genes to regulate the expression of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism genes. However, the function of ArcA in Plesiomonas shigelloides is unknown.
RESULTS: In the present study, P. shigelloides was used as the research object. The differences in growth, motility, biofilm formation, and virulence between the WT strain and the ΔarcA isogenic deletion mu

The first two cases are reported in which Plesiomonas shigelloides was isolated from patients with mixed aerobic/anaerobic septicaemia originating from the biliary tree. The first patient who was previously well survived after removal of a gangrenous gallbladder. The second patient suffered from an extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and died of infection thus highlighting the poor prognostic outcome of P. shigelloides septicaemia in immunocompromised patients. Furthermore these cases demonstrate that P. shigelloides can be isolated from mixed infections and may act synergistically with other bact

Plesiomonas shigelloides is an emerging pathogen that is widespread in the aquatic environment and is responsible for intestinal diseases and extraintestinal infections in humans and other animals. Virtually nothing is known about its genetic diversity, population structure, and evolution, which severely limits epidemiological control. We addressed these questions by developing a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) system based on five genes (fusA, leuS, pyrG, recG, and rpoB) and analyzing 77 epidemiologically unrelated strains from several countries and several ecological sources. The phylogene

Little is known about clinical and epidemiological features of Plesiomonas shigelloides-associated diarrhoea in children. We reviewed hospital-based surveillance records of 38 children with diarrhoea having P. shigelloides as the only pathogen isolated from their faecal specimen. Of those 38 children, 29 (76 per cent) were below 2 years of age and 28 (74 per cent) were male. Thirty-two (84 per cent) children presented with watery diarrhoea and six (16 per cent) had dysenteric stools. Vomiting was a feature in 27 (71 per cent) children and clinically significant dehydration was observed in nine

Plesiomonas shigelloides is a gram-negative bacillus that most commonly causes self-limited diarrhea in humans. Extraintestinal manifestations of P. shigelloides, including skin and soft tissue infections, are extremely uncommon. We present a case of severe cellulitis and bacteremia in an 80-year-old female caused by Plesiomonas shigelloides following a traumatic freshwater injury in Michigan, USA.

The susceptibility of 10 Plesiomonas shigelloides strains to 30 beta-lactam antibiotics was examined. Susceptibility testing was carried out with a microdilution procedure using 3 media (Isosensitest broth, Mueller-Hinton broth and cation-adjusted Mueller-Hinton broth) and 4 inocula [1 x 10(4), 1 x 10(5), 1 x 10(6) and 1 x 10(7) colony-forming units (CFU)/ml]. A high inoculum dependency of MIC values was found for numerous beta-lactams. Each strain showed 2 completely different susceptibility patterns to several cephalosporins and aztreonam, but the same patterns were found with little variati

Impressive advancements in our understanding of the mechanisms of diarrhea production and of the epidemiologic importance of these "classical" bacterial enteropathogens have been accomplished, but many areas are in need of further exploration. The recent development of gene probes and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the identification of EPEC, ETEC and EIEC will enhance immeasurably the ability to carry out large scale epidemiologic studies which are still needed to clarify the global importance of these pathogens in infantile diarrhea. For some of these organisms pathogenic mechanisms

Plesiomonas shigelloides, a pathogen responsible for frequent outbreaks of severe travelers' diarrhea, causes grave extraintestinal infections. Sepsis and meningitis due to P. shigelloides are associated with a high mortality rate as antibiotic resistance increases and vaccines are not available. Carbohydrate antigens expressed by pathogens are often structurally unique and are targets for developing vaccines and diagnostics. Here, we report a total synthesis of the highly functionalized trisaccharide repeating unit 2 from P. shigelloides serotype 51 from three monosaccharides. A judicious cho

Antibiotic resistance is known to impact treatment efficiency of Plesiomonas infections negatively with fatal outcomes. This study investigated antibiogram fingerprint of P. shigelloides (n = 182) isolated from three South Africa rivers using the disc diffusion technique. Environmental pollution and analogous health risk (given infections) that could associate with the freshwaters and empirical treatment of Plesiomonas were assessed using Antibiotic Resistance Index (ARI) and Multiple Antibiotic Resistance Indices (MARI), respectively. Thirteen EUCAST recommended (ERAs) and eleven non-recommen

Plesiomonas shigelloides, an organism commonly found in water, is only rarely associated with diarrhoea in man. P. shigelloides serotype O:17 (SVC O1), which is antigenically similar to Shigella sonnei, was found to be neither virulent nor toxic for rabbits. Rabbits immunised by feeding with P. shigelloides (SVC O1) were completely protected against an oral challenge with 10(10) cells of S. sonnei but non-immunised rabbits were not. P. shigelloides (SVC O1) may be a useful vaccine strain for shigellosis.

Plesiomonas shigelloides are ubiquitous Gram-negative bacteria that are found in fresh or marine water, particularly in tropical or warm climates; they were recently implicated in diarrhoeal disease. Patients usually present with a history of recent travel to tropical regions or consumption of uncooked seafood. Extraintestinal disease has rarely been reported, occurring generally in neonates or immunocompromised patients, and is often fatal. We report a case of right pyosalpinx due to P. shigelloides acquired by swimming in contaminated water. Laparoscopic salpingectomy led to a good outcome.

Plesiomonas shigelloides (P. shigelloides) is a gram-negative, thermotolerant, motile, and pleomorphic microorganism that acts as an opportunistic pathogen, capable of causing abscesses, enteric infections, and even sepsis in humans and other animals, thereby posing a threat to human and animal health worldwide. The crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) is a globally endangered avian species with a limited population and is vulnerable for various infections. To gain a better understanding of the prevalence of P. shigelloides in the endangered crested ibis, fecal samples from the crested ibis at the X

The zig-zag eel (Mastacembelus armatus) is a commercially important fish species in southern China, yet its susceptibility to Plesiomonas shigelloides (P. shigelloides) infection remains poorly understood. In this study, 100 μL of YY001 (1 × 109 CFU/mL) was used to intraperitoneally infect the zig-zag eel, and its effect on the hepatopancreas of the M. armatus was observed. The histopathology analysis of hepatopancreas revealed hemorrhage, tissue loosening, enlarged intercellular spaces, and increased cellular vacuolation. Transcriptomic profiling identified 5508 differentially expressed genes

Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) is an indigenous species of China and is listed as a critically endangered species. Recently, second filial generations of Chinese sturgeon in the Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute suffered from a severe disease. In this study, two kinds of pathogenic bacteria were isolated from diseased sturgeon and identified as Plesiomonas shigelloides and Citrobacter freundii, based on 16S rDNA gene sequence alignment analysis. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that P. shigelloides was resistant to ampicillin, penicillin, midecamycin, oxacillin, and

The swift emergence of antibiotic resistance (AR) in bacterial pathogens to make themselves adaptable to changing environments has become an alarming health issue. To prevent AR infection, many ways can be accomplished such as by decreasing the misuse of antibiotics in human and animal medicine. Among these AR bacterial species, Plesiomonas shigelloides is one of the etiological agents of intestinal infection in humans. It is a gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that is highly resistant to several classes of antibiotics, and no licensed vaccine against the aforementioned pathogen is available.

A 7-year-old male gray wolf was found dead at a zoo during exhibition. To determine the cause of death, histological and gross necropsy diagnoses and a molecular analysis were performed. The gross necropsy revealed a swollen abdomen, hemorrhagic exudates around the mouth, splenomegaly, a discolored liver, a congested kidney, hemorrhagic ascites, and dark gray-colored membranes and air bubbles in the fundus of the stomach. Rod-shaped bacteria were found in the liver parenchyma and hemorrhagic ascites using Giemsa staining. The nucleotide sequencing of the cultured bacteria identified the causat

This study provides the first definitive evidence that the gram-negative bacterium Plesiomonas shigelloides adheres to and enters eukaryotic intestinal host cells in vitro. P. shigelloides is increasingly regarded as an emerging enteric pathogen and has been implicated in intestinal and extraintestinal infections in humans. However, the establishment of its true role in enteric disease has been hindered by inadequacies in experimental design, deficiencies in clinical diagnosis, and the lack of an appropriate animal model. In this investigation, an in vitro system was used to evaluate plesiomon

Plesiomonas shigelloides, an aquatic Gram-negative bacillus often associated with self-limiting gastroenteritis, has been reported worldwide. However, to date, no reviews have specifically investigated P. shigelloides bacteremia, which is rare and potentially fatal. This scoping review aimed to examine the existing literature to identify the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, antimicrobial susceptibility, and outcomes of P. shigelloides bacteremia. A PRISMA-ScR-guided search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase identified 22 published cases, all reported as single-patient case re

The immune deficiencies of Hodgkin's disease persist to some degree even after the patients are clinically cured; these may be amplified by loss of splenic immunologic functions after staging laparotomy and splenectomy. The authors submit a case report wherein a bacterium of relatively low virulence, Plesiomonas shigelloides, was associated with a rapidly fulminant septicemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome, and death in a splenectomized patient free of Hodgkin's disease for approximately five years. This emphasizes the need for prolonged observation,
