Uncertainty analyses have been performed on the biokinetic model for americium currently used by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), and the model for plutonium recently derived by Leggett, considering acute intakes by ingestion by adult members of the public. In 2008, Serandour et al. reported on their in vitro experiment involving rat plasma samples obtained after an intravenous intake of plutonium citrate. Different amounts of DTPA were added to the plasma samples and the percentage of low-molecular-weight plutonium measured. σ-Hydrocarbyl complexes of the form [M(η5-PC4Me4)2(μ-η1:η6-CH2Ph)2K(η6-arene)] (M = La, Ce, Pr, U, Np, Pu; arene = benzene or toluene) were synthesised in one-pot reactions from [MI3(THF)4], or [U(BH4)3(toluene)] (M = U). All complexes were examined by multinuclear (1H, 13C{1H}, 31P{1H}) NMR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction from which molecular metal-phosphorus bonds for Np and Pu, and a σ-hydrocarbyl metal-carbon bond for Pu, have been structurally authenticated.

Available medical records of plutonium injectees exposed in experimental studies of plutonium biokinetics under Manhattan Engineer District auspices have been reviewed for subsequent medical findings potentially related to the plutonium exposures. Transferrin (Tf) is a glycoprotein that transports iron from the serum to the various organs. Several studies have highlighted that Tf can interact with metals other than Fe(III), including actinides that are chemical and radiological toxics. An ongoing case-control study evaluating the association between workplace external radiation exposures and leukaemia mortality required an assessment of internal plutonium exposures as a potential confounder. Of the study participants, 1,092 were employed at four Department of Energy sites where plutonium-bearing materials were processed or stored. Exposures were assessed by first categorising exposure potentials based on available bioassay data, then estimating doses for workers in the highest categories using recent recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection.

Chromosome analysis using a single-color FISH technique to paint three pairs of chromosomes was undertaken on a group of 46 retired plutonium workers with assessed bone marrow doses >60 mSv, 34 of whom were categorized as having robust dosimetry and 12 for whom internal doses were considered less reliable. Twenty-six white male subjects, who worked with plutonium (239Pu) during World War II at Los Alamos, have been given medical examinations periodically over a period of 42 y to identify potential health effects. Inhalation was the primary mode of Pu exposures. The latest examinations, including urine bioassay and in-vivo measurements for radioactivity, were performed in late 1986 and 1987.
