BACKGROUND: Between 1997 and 1999 three sericite plant workers in Parana, Brazil, were diagnosed with pneumoconiosis.
AIMS: To investigate and describe the radiological, clinical, and pathological changes in miners and millers exposed to sericite dust with mineralogical characteristics of inhaled dust.
METHODS: The working premises were visited to examine the sericite processing and to classify the jobs according to make qualitative evaluation. Respirable dust was collected and the amount of crystalline silica and particle size distribution were measured. Forty four workers were examined by …

A fuller's earth worker developed signs of pneumoconiosis. Pathological examination of the lung tissues showed interstitial collections of dust laden macrophages associated with mild fibrosis. Mineralogical analysis showed a high content of montmorillonite. This study shows that a pneumoconiosis can result from prolonged heavy exposure to calcium montmorillonite (fuller's earth) in the absence of quartz. The disease is relatively mild and associated with little clinical disability.

A large number of cellular mediators such as cytokines, antioxidants and growth factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory and fibrotic diseases. Common functional polymorphisms in these genes have been shown to influence individual susceptibility to these diseases. Silicosis, coal worker pneumoconiosis, progressive massive fibrosis and berylliosis are examples of fibrotic pneumoconiosis and are characterized by irreversible fibrotic lesions in the lung resulting from chronic dust inhalation. Although the materials are the major contributory factors of the disease…

This symposium was organized to provide recent informations concerning pneumoconiosis and mycobacterial diseases in Japan. Pneumoconiotic workers have been decreasing in number and in severity because of change in industrial structure and improvement of occupational health measures. But radiological figures of dust exposed worker are going to be complex and be difficult for diagnosis due to aging, smoking and of complicated respiratory and non-respiratory diseases. Major complications such as pulmonary tuberculosis and tuberculous pleurisy are decreasing but non-tuberculous mycobacterial infec…

Four patients are described in whom pneumoconiosis was diagnosed towards the end of a lifetime's work in shale mines. All developed complicated pneumoconiosis, diagnosed in two cases at necropsy, in one by lobectomy, and in one radiologically. Two of the patients were found at necropsy also to have peripheral squamous lung cancer. The clinical and histological features of the disease resembled the pneumoconioses of coalminers and kaolin workers and the lungs of three of the patients were shown to contain dust composed predominantly of kaolinite, mica, and silica. Shale miners' complicated pneu…

In 1953, Caplan described a characteristic radiographic pattern in coal miners with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that was distinct from the typical progressive massive fibrosis pattern of coalworkers' pneumoconiosis. It consists of multiple well-defined rounded nodules on chest X-ray, from about 0.5 to about several centimetres in diameter, distributed throughout the lungs but predominantly at the lung periphery. Lesions appear often in crops, may coalesce and form a larger confluent nodule. Nodules often cavitate or calcify. They typically occur in the setting of pre-existing mild pneumoconiosis…

Blastomyces dermatitidis is a thermally dimorphic fungus that can cause pulmonary, extrapulmonary, or disseminated infections. Though it can infect both immune-competent and immunocompromised hosts, the disease can be severe in immunocompromised hosts. Exposure to silica dust is associated with silicosis, and this is associated with impaired immunity and an increased risk of mycobacterial and fungal infections. The fungal infections commonly associated with pneumoconiosis are pulmonary aspergillosis, histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, and cryptococcosis. However, there is a dearth of data on …

BACKGROUND: Acute Silicosis was first described in 1900 by Betts. It's also denominated as silicoproteinosis. It's an infrequent way of pneumoconiosis which is produced when sandblasting.
CLINICAL CASE: 27 year old male who has been working for four years in a glass shop, etching them through sandblasting. Four years before with dyspnea on exertion rapidly progressing. Coughing spell, emetic and wheezing, with daily hyaline expectoration of 50 cc, yearly weight loss of 44 lbs and intense chest pain. Breathing rates 36X'. He was polypneic, with basal bilateral crackling rales. Thorax X-rays sh…

Middle Georgia kaolin workers (n = 459) were surveyed for the presence of pneumoconiosis by chest radiograph and for respiratory symptoms by questionnaire. Pulmonary function was measured in all workers by spirometry. The overall prevalence of pneumoconiosis in this population was 9.2%. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the only significant correlates with the radiographic presence of pneumoconiosis were ages greater than 55 yr and greater than 15 yr work exposure in the job category associated with greatest dust exposure. There was no correlation between the radiographic presence of pne…
