Mycoplasma pneumoniae ecephalitis.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes between 5 and 10 percent of acute childhood encephalitis in Europe and North America. Encephalitis due to this organism may be caused by direct infection of the brain, immune-mediated brain injury or thromboembolic phenomenon. The prognosis is guarded with 20 to 60 percent suffering neurologic sequelae. The diagnosis of M. pneumoniae encephalitis should be based on strong evidence of M. pneumoniae infection that includes detection of the organism in culture or using molecular detection techniques in addition to serology and exclusion of other potential etiologies.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a frequent cause of community-acquired respiratory infections in children and adults. Although the organism is felt to be the most frequent 'atypical' pathogen responsible for community-acquired pneumonia in adults, the prevalence of M. pneumoniae varies greatly from study to study, depending on the population and the diagnostic methods used. Recent studies have found the prevalence of M. pneumoniae in adults with pneumonia to range from 1.9 to over 30%. M. pneumoniae is also a frequent cause of outbreaks of respiratory disease in institutional settings. However, the d

Transcription in Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Very little is understood of the structure of mycoplasma promoters, and this limits interpretation of genomic sequence data in these species. In this study the transcriptional start points of 22 genes of Mycoplasma pneumoniae were identified and the regions 5' to the start point compared. Although a strong consensus -10 region could be seen, there was only a weak consensus in the -35 region. A high proportion of transcripts had heterogeneous 5'-ends and characterisation of the sequence of the 5'-ends of two transcripts established that the heterogeneity was derived from initiation of transcrip

Mapping phosphoproteins in Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding the extent or targets of phosphorylation in mycoplasmas, yet in many other bacterial species phosphorylation is known to play an important role in signaling and regulation of cellular processes. To determine the prevalence of phosphorylation in mycoplasmas, we examined the CHAPS-soluble protein fractions of Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma pneumoniae by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), using a combination of Pro-Q Diamond phosphoprotein stain and 33P labeling. Protein spots that were positive for phosphorylation were identified by peptide ma

[Asthma and Mycoplasma pneumoniae].

INTRODUCTION: A growing body of basic and clinical science implicates Mycoplasma pneumonia in asthma, but its exact contribution to asthma development, exacerbation and persistence is as yet unclear. STATE OF THE ART: M. pneumoniae infection, with the induction of bronchial hyperresponsiveness, seems to be a precipitating factor for asthma development in predisposed subjects. M. pneumoniae has been seen both in acute exacerbation (18-20%) and in chronically infected adults with stable asthma, where it may be enhancing chronic airway inflammation. PERSPECTIVES: If M. pneumoniae plays a role i

[Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections].

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pathogenic micro-organism frequently held responsible for acute respiratory infection. The disease is ubiquitous and often proceeds in epidemics among small communities of young people (families, army barracks, universities). Its usual clinical manifestations consist of a stubborn cough symptomatic of tracheo-bronchitis with or without fever, and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Cases where chest X-rays show a pulmonary infiltrate are less frequent, but they differ from other lung diseases in that the respiratory signs at physical examination are discreet

Motility of Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Cell of Mycoplasma pneumoniae FH gliding on a glass surface in liquid medium were examined by microscopic observation and quantitatively by microcinematography (30 frames per min). Comparisons were made only within the individual experiments. The cells moved in an irregular pattern with numerous narrow bends and circles. They never changed their leading end. The average speed (without pauses) was relatively constant between o.2 and 0.5 mum/s. The maximum speed was about 1.5 to 2.0 mum/s. The movements were interrupted by resting periods of different lengths and frequency. Temperature, viscosit

Chest CT Findings and Differential Diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae Pneumonia and Mycoplasma pneumoniae Combined with Streptococcal Pneumonia in Children.

BACKGROUND: In this day and age, 17% of children less than 5 years of age died of pneumonia; it is the common cause of children death. It is one of the main children respiratory infectious diseases, i.e., mycoplasma pneumonia (MP). The imaging examination can be adopted to quickly observe the morphology and scope of the pulmonary lesions and know the effect of disease treatment and subsequent changes in the disease in order to provide a basis for treatment. Therefore, the most commonly applied technology for detecting pneumonia in children is imaging technology, including chest X-ray and CT.

Mycoplasma bovis pneumonia in cattle.

Mycoplasma bovis is an important and emerging cause of respiratory disease and arthritis in feedlot cattle and young dairy and veal calves, and has a variety of other disease manifestations in cattle. M. bovis is certainly capable of causing acute respiratory disease in cattle, yet the attributable fraction has been difficult to estimate. In contrast, M. bovis is more accepted as a cause of chronic bronchopneumonia with caseous and perhaps coagulative necrosis, characterized by persistent infection that seems poorly responsive to many antibiotics. An understanding of the disease has been recen

Mycoplasma pneumonia diagnostic prediction score: Is it possible to differentiate between Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia and SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia?

INTRODUCTION: The Mycoplasma Pneumonia Diagnostic Prediction Score, recommended in pneumonia guidelines, is a useful method for differentiating Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia from bacterial pneumonia. On the other hand, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a common microorganism in community-acquired pneumonia, so we investigated whether the Mycoplasma Score can differentiate between M. pneumoniae pneumonia and SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. METHODS: Analysis was performed on 162 patients with M. pneumoniae, 422 patients with the Ancestral strain, 262 with the Alpha variant

Differences of clinical features and prognosis between Mycoplasma pneumoniae necrotizing pneumonia and non-Mycoplasma pneumoniae necrotizing pneumonia in children.

BACKGROUND: In the past few years, Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Shi et al. Lancet 390:946-958, 2017) infection has been reported more in China. However, there are few studies on the clinical characteristics and prognosis of necrotizing pneumonia (NP) (Griffiths et al. Nature 583:615-619, 2020) caused by different pathogens. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed, including 31 children with a clinical diagnosis of NP in the hospital from January 1, 2013 to January 31, 2020. A total of 11 children with MPNP were included in the observation group and the other 20 children with other pathogens

Host immune dysfunction and Mycoplasma pneumoniae immune evasion: dual drivers of pathogenesis in Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) is a highly prevalent form of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) that can be complicated by severe extrapulmonary manifestations, leading to poor prognosis. The immunopathogenesis of MPP remains incompletely elucidated. This review synthesizes recent advancements, identifying host immune dysfunction and microbial immune evasion as the pivotal dual drivers of MPP immunopathogenesis. We detail how dysregulation of both innate and adaptive immunity—including impaired macrophage function, neutrophil-driven hyperinflammation, paradoxical natural killer (NK) cel

Methaemoglobinaemia as a rare complication of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia.

A previously healthy female was admitted following inpatient antibiotic treatment for a lower respiratory tract infection. Since admission, her pulse oximetry revealed low oxygen saturation despite oxygen supplementation. The oxygen pressure in arterial blood remained normal with a wide gap between peripheral oxygen saturation and arterial oxygen saturation values. Suspicion of methaemoglobinaemia was raised. Methaemoglobinaemia reduction test (Brewer's test) became positive and was confirmed with a blood methaemoglobin assay value of 18.19%. High-performance liquid chromatography excluded the
