In vitro anthelminthic potential of Setaria barbata (Poaceae) extracts on Ancylostoma caninum, a gastrointestinal nematode of dogs.

Gastrointestinal parasitic infections adversely affect the health and well-being of animals worldwide. The limitations of the efficacy of pharmaceutical anthelmintics underscore the importance of finding alternative approaches to reduce the impact of parasitism on hosts. Investigating the anthelmintic properties of bioactive plants could be one way to contribute to this effort. The present study evaluates in vitro the activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Setaria barbata on the four free-living life stages of Ancylostoma caninum, the primary gastrointestinal nematode of dogs. After pre

Poaceae, Secale spp. and Artemisia spp. pollen in the air at two sites of different degrees of urbanisation.

INTRODUCTION: Among herbal plants, most cases of allergic reactions, like seasonal inflammation of nasal mucosa, conjunctivitis and pollen asthma, are related to the allergens from grass pollen. As the blossoming and pollination of rye is known to start the pollen season of grasses, information about the airborne rye pollen count permits alerting the people allergic to certain allergens contained in rye pollen. An important cause of allergy is also the pollen from wormwood, blossoming in late summer, as its two main allergens produce cross-reactions with many other plant allergens. OBJECTIVE:

Evaluating Oryza sativa (Poales: Poaceae) as a host for Diuraphis noxia (Hemiptera: Aphididae): implications for pest management.

Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia, Mordvilko ex Kurdjumov) (RWA) is a major pest of wheat and barley. Although rice (Oryza sativa L.) is not considered a primary host, RWA has been found on drill-sown rice in Australia prior to the application of permanent water. This study investigates the persistence of RWA on rice and evaluates plant responses to infestation, with the aim of determining whether pest management interventions are justified in Australian rice-growing systems. A series of replicated glasshouse trials was conducted using single and repeated aphid infestation pressures. Result

Discovery of natural Miscanthus (Poaceae) triploid plants in sympatric populations of Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Miscanthus sinensis in southern Japan.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Looming petroleum shortages and projected negative impacts of human-induced climate change may be partly alleviated by the development and use of bioenergy feedstock crops. Miscanthus ×giganteus, a highly productive sterile triploid hybrid grass that was discovered in Japan several decades ago, has considerable potential as an alternative source of energy. Given the risks, however, involved in the reliance upon production of one clone of this hybrid, which is a natural cross between Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Miscanthus sinensis, for lignocellulosic bioenergy productio

The digital map of homologous gene clusters across Poaceae species unveils the complex evolutionary trajectories of genes in Triticeae.

Gene origin, duplication, and loss are key drivers that shape genome evolution, phenotypic diversification, and plant adaptation. Nevertheless, the fine-scale evolutionary trajectories of genes within their local genomic contexts across diverse genera remain poorly characterized. Here, we developed an approach, GoldMiner, that uses homologous gene clusters (HOCs) as evolutionary units for investigating gene evolution and enables hierarchical alignment of pan-genomic HOCs across species and genera. We constructed a genus-level pangenomic map of half a million indexed HOCs across 248 diploid gen

Changes in organic compounds secreted by roots in two Poaceae species (Hordeum vulgare and Polypogon monspenliensis) subjected to iron deficiency.

Despite their economic and ecological interests, Poaceae are affected by the low availability of iron in calcareous soils. Several studies focused on the capacity of this family to secrete phytosiderophores and organic acids as a mechanism of tolerance to iron deficiency. This work aimed at studying the physiological responses of two Poaceae species; Hordeum vulgare (cultivated barley) and Polypogon monspenliensis (spontaneous species) to iron deficiency, and evaluate especially the release of phytosiderophores and organic acids. For this purpose, seedlings of these two species were cultivated

Phytochemical Screening, Toxic Effects, and Antimicrobial Activity Studies of Digitaria abyssinica (Hochst. ex A.Rich.) Stapf (Poaceae) Rhizome Extracts against Selected Uropathogenic Microorganisms.

In Kenya, the D. abyssinica rhizome's decoction is traditionally used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), mainly gonorrhea and candidiasis. UTIs are the most severe public health problems that affect over one hundred and fifty million people worldwide annually. They are caused by a wide range of microorganisms where Escherichia coli is known to be the main causative pathogen. Medicinal plants are used in traditional Kenya set up for treatment and most recently as an alternative source of treatment for UTIs due to the increased cost of treatment and many challenges experienced with antibi

De novo genome assembly of Texas wintergrass (Nassella leucotricha (Trin. & Rupr.) Pohl) supports diagnostic marker development and phylogenetic analysis of species within the family Poaceae.

Texas wintergrass is a cool-season perennial bunchgrass native to North America with ecological and agronomic importance as a winter forage species, yet genomic resources for this species remain limited. Here, we present the first de novo genome assembly of N. leucotricha generated using PacBio HiFi sequencing. Assembly with hifiasm produced a 959.92 Mb genome with 8X coverage, comprising 2,394 contigs with an N50 of 530.6 kb. Assembly completeness was high, with 99.6% of Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs (BUSCOs) identified, although a substantial proportion were duplicated. Genome

Chloroplast Genome Evolution, Heteroplasmy, and Inverted Repeat Dynamics in the Elymus Complex (Triticeae, Poaceae): Insights from Single-Molecule Sequencing of Elymus ciliaris and Comparative Analysis of St-Genome Lineages.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Elymus sensu lato (Poaceae) is arguably the largest and most complex genus in the tribe Triticeae. It includes hybrids and polyploids based on x=7 chromosomes, all including the St genome, forming a valuable genepool for forage grass and cereal breeding. Analysis of chloroplast genome diversity and structural dynamics is critical for resolving maternal lineages, reticulate evolution and biodiversity across this agronomically important complex, refining their taxonomy, conservation and exploitation. METHODS: We sequenced the complete chloroplast genome (plastome) of Elym

Poaceae Type II Galactinol Synthase 2 from Antarctic Flowering Plant Deschampsia antarctica and Rice Improves Cold and Drought Tolerance by Accumulation of Raffinose Family Oligosaccharides in Transgenic Rice Plants.

Deschampsia antarctica is a Poaceae grass that has adapted to and colonized Antarctica. When D. antarctica plants were subjected to cold and dehydration stress both in the Antarctic field and in laboratory experiments, galactinol, a precursor of raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) and raffinose were highly accumulated, which was accompanied by upregulation of galactinol synthase (GolS). The Poaceae monocots have a small family of GolS genes, which are divided into two distinct groups called types I and II. Type II GolSs are highly expanded in cold-adapted monocot plants. Páramo Calamagrostis s.l. (Poaceae): An updated list and key to the species known or likely to occur in páramos of NW South America and southern Central America including two new species, one new variety and five new records for Colombia.

Calamagrostis (syn. Deyeuxia), as traditionally circumscribed, is one of the most speciose genera from páramo grasslands of northwest South America and southern Central America and often dominates these high-elevation habitats. However, it remains difficult for researchers to accurately identify the species due to a lack of floristic treatments for most of the countries containing páramo, with the distribution of many species still very poorly known. In an effort to ameliorate this, we present an updated list and identification keys in English and Spanish (as electronic appendix) to the specie

Evolutionary modes of emergence of short interspersed nuclear element (SINE) families in grasses.

Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) are non-autonomous transposable elements which are propagated by retrotransposition and constitute an inherent part of the genome of most eukaryotic species. Knowledge of heterogeneous and highly abundant SINEs is crucial for de novo (or improvement of) annotation of whole genome sequences. We scanned Poaceae genome sequences of six important cereals (Oryza sativa, Triticum aestivum, Hordeum vulgare, Panicum virgatum, Sorghum bicolor, Zea mays) and Brachypodium distachyon to examine the diversity and evolution of SINE populations. We comparatively an
