First record of Camallanus cotti (Fujita, 1927) in traded guppies (Poecilia reticulata) from India.

The guppy Poecilia reticulata is a widely traded ornamental fish species, valued for its popularity in aquariums globally. Parasitic infections pose a significant threat to both ornamental culture and native fish populations. This study records the first occurrence of the intestinal nematode Camallanus cotti (Fujita, 1927) in guppies from India, confirmed through both morphological and molecular analysis. Sixteen guppies were collected from the Kolathur ornamental fish market, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Examination revealed that 11 fish (68.75%) were infected with red thread-like nematodes protrudin

Retinal Structure of Poecilia sphenops: Photoreceptor Mosaics, Synaptic Ribbon Patterns, and Glial Cell Expressions.

The specific arrangement and distribution of photoreceptors in the retina can vary among different fish species, with each species exhibiting adaptations related to its habitat, behavior, and visual requirements. Poecilia sphenops, a diurnal fish, was the focus of this study. The retinas of a total of eighteen Molly fish were investigated utilizing light and electron microscopy. The retina exhibited a square mosaic pattern of the inner segments of cones. This pattern comprised double cones positioned along the sides of a square, with two types of single cones situated at the center and corners

Synthetic progestin etonogestrel negatively affects mating behavior and reproduction in Endler's guppies (Poecilia wingei).

High rates of progestins consumption in the form of active ingredients in women's oral contraceptives and other hormonal preparations may lead to their increased concentrations in aquatic environments and subsequent harmful effect on fish reproduction. The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of etonogestrel, a third-generation synthetic progestin, on the reproductive behavior, fertility, gonads histology, and secondary sexual characteristics of male and female Endler's guppies (Poecilia wingei). Fish were subjected for 34 days to two concentrations of etonogestrel, includin

Effects of salinity and broad-range antibiotics on oxalate production, transport, and degradation in Poecilia latipinna.

Oxalate is an anion that readily binds calcium and is thought to contribute to osmoregulation. This study investigated how environmental salinity influences oxalate homeostasis in euryhaline sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna), with a focus on the interplay between microbial symbiosis and host transport processes. Gut microbiome profiling demonstrated regional specialization, with the posterior intestine enriched in oxalate-degrading bacterial families. Community shifts across salinities suggests functional redundancy and resilience, ensuring maintenance of oxalate-catabolizing capacity. Anti

Unraveling Spermatogenesis in Molly Fish (Poecilia sphenops): An Integrative Study of Testicular Ultrastructure and Immunohistochemistry.

Spermatogenesis in teleosts is essential for reproductive function; however, it varies considerably among species. The testis of the viviparous molly fish (Poecilia sphenops) was examined using both ultrastructural and immunohistochemical methods. The testis displays a restricted lobular type, where germ cells develop synchronously within Sertoli cell-forming cysts. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed all stages of spermatogenesis. Mature sperm are at the apex of the cysts and migrate toward the sperm ducts. Sperm duct epithelium is lined by cuboidal cells joined by tight junctions

Death of guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) leukocytes induced by in vivo exposure to temephos and spinosad.

Temephos and spinosad are pesticides used for control of vector-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and zika. However, the inadequate use of these substances has affected the health of non-target organisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare, the effects of temephos and spinosad on leukocyte viability and death, using guppy fish (Poecilia reticulate) as a model organism. Guppies were exposed to temephos (10 mg/L) and spinosad (0.5 mg/L) for 7, 14, and 21 days. Afterwards, they were placed in pesticide-free fish tanks (7, 35, and 70 days) for recovery. The results showed t

Complexities of gene expression patterns in natural populations of an extremophile fish (Poecilia mexicana, Poeciliidae).

Variation in gene expression can provide insights into organismal responses to environmental stress and physiological mechanisms mediating adaptation to habitats with contrasting environmental conditions. We performed an RNA-sequencing experiment to quantify gene expression patterns in fish adapted to habitats with different combinations of environmental stressors, including the presence of toxic hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) and the absence of light in caves. We specifically asked how gene expression varies among populations living in different habitats, whether population differences were consist

Receptor-specific GABAergic modulation of the stress-ovarian axis in the viviparous teleost Poecilia sphenops.

The relationship between stress and reproduction in fish is mediated through complex neuroendocrine pathways, including activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis. However, the role of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in reproductive stress response remains poorly understood in teleosts. In this study, we examined the involvement of GABA in stress and reproduction in female black molly Poecilia sphenops by employing GABAA and GABAB receptor-specific antagonists under normal and stress conditions. Chronic exposure to intermittent aquacultural stressors for 29 days significantl

Effect of male age on sperm traits and sperm competition success in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata).

Deleterious mutations can accumulate in the germline with age, decreasing the genetic quality of sperm and imposing a cost on female fitness. If these mutations also affect sperm competition ability or sperm production, then females will benefit from polyandry as it incites sperm competition and, consequently, minimizes the mutational load in the offspring. We tested this hypothesis in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a species characterized by polyandry and intense sperm competition, by investigating whether age affects post-copulatory male traits and sperm competition success. Females did no

Molecular and biological characterization of a Cryptosporidium molnari-like isolate from a guppy (Poecilia reticulata).

Histological, morphological, genetic, and phylogenetic analyses of a Cryptosporidium molnari-like isolate from a guppy (Poecilia reticulata) identified stages consistent with those of C. molnari and revealed that C. molnari is genetically very distinct from all other species of Cryptosporidium. This study represents the first genetic characterization of C. molnari.

Diagnosis, isolation and description of a novel amnoonvirus recovered from diseased fancy guppies, Poecilia reticulata.

The guppy, Poecilia reticulata, is one of the most common cultured ornamental fish species, and a popular pet fish highly desired by hobbyists worldwide due to its availability of many brilliantly coloured fish of many varieties. The susceptibility of guppies to diseases presents a remarkable concern for both breeders and hobbyists. In this study, we report the emergence of disease in fancy guppies caused by a previously uncharacterized virus in the USA. This virus was isolated from moribund guppies in two separate outbreaks in California and Alabama, from December 2021 to June 2023. The infec

Water pollution affects fish community structure and alters evolutionary trajectories of invasive guppies (Poecilia reticulata).

Anthropogenic habitat alterations have the potential to affect both, ecological dynamics of communities and populations, as well as evolutionary processes within populations. Invasive species may benefit from anthropogenic disturbance, such as water pollution, to which they sometimes seem more resistant than native ones. They also allow investigating evolutionary divergence among populations occurring along pollution gradients. We assessed fish communities at 55 sampling sites in the degraded and heavily overstocked Mutara Rangelands of north-eastern Rwanda (upper Nile drainage), which receive

Efficacy of ginger-based treatments against infection with Gyrodactylus turnbulli in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata (Peters)).

Monogenean infections of commercially farmed fishes are responsible for significant economic losses and existing chemical therapeutants, often stressful to the fish, pose associated risks. As part of a recent trend to move towards the use of alternative, plant-based remedies for commonly occurring aquaculture-related diseases, the efficiency of ginger (Zingiber officinale) was investigated against the monogenean parasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli in the guppy. In vitro trials revealed the clear anti-parasitic effects of ginger. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts, prepared from freeze dried ginger, we

Transversotrema hafniensis n. sp. infection in Poecilia reticulata by cercariae released from Melanoides tuberculata in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Exotic and ornamental fish are highly popular companion animals resulting in a significant transcontinental trade of fish, invertebrates and aquatic plants. A major issue is the diseases associated with these organisms, as they have a major impact on health of the fish in both public and private household aquaria. A secondary issue is the trade with these products, which potentially may expand the distribution area and spread a range of diseases to new habitats. RESULTS: We here describe how Poecilia reticulata (guppy), produced in a private household aquarium, were invaded by cer

Structure of the female gonoduct of the viviparous teleost Poecilia reticulata (Poeciliidae) during nongestation and gestation stages.

Female teleosts do not have oviducts because Müllerian ducts do not develop. Instead, the caudal region of the ovary, the gonoduct, connects to the exterior. Because of the lack of oviducts in viviparous teleosts, the embryos develop in the ovary, as an intraovarian gestation, unique in vertebrates. This is the first study to address the histology of the gonoduct in a viviparous teleost. The gonoduct of Poecilia reticulata was analyzed during previtellogenesis, vitellogenesis, and gestation. The gonoduct lacks germinal cells. From deep to superficial, the wall has simple cuboidal or columnar e

Morphology, testes development and behaviour of unusual triploid males in microchromosome-carrying clones of Poecilia formosa.

In a microchromosome-carrying laboratory stock of the normally all-female Amazon molly Poecilia formosa triploid individuals were obtained, all of which spontaneously developed into males. A comparison of morphology of the external and internal insemination apparatus and the gonads, sperm ploidy and behaviour, to laboratory-bred F(1) hybrids revealed that the triploid P. formosa males, though producing mostly aneuploid sperm, are partly functional males that differ mainly in sperm maturation and sexual motivation from gonochoristic P. formosa males.

Prostaglandin synthesis and its inhibition by cyclic AMP and forskolin in postpartum follicles of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata).

Prostaglandin synthesis in vitro and its inhibition by dibutyryl cyclic AMP and forskolin were examined in postpartum follicles of the guppy. The follicles were cultured for up to 72h under chemically-defined conditions, and the synthesis of prostaglandins was determined by radioimmunoassay. The results show unequivocally that the ovarian follicles devoid of embryos can synthesize PGE and PGF from both endogenous precursors as well as added arachidonic acid. That this could be inhibited by indomethacin is indicative of active synthesis rather than release of preformed prostaglandins. Dibutyryl
