A 9-state analysis of designer stimulant, "bath salt," hospital visits reported to poison control centers.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: A new generation of designer stimulants marketed as "bath salts" emerged in late 2010. The goal is to describe the epidemiologic emergence of designer stimulants in 9 states in the Midwest. METHODS: A retrospective review of the National Poison Data System was performed between November 1, 2010, and November 30, 2011. Inclusion criteria were health care-evaluated bath salts or other synthetic stimulants exposures. Cases were excluded if the exposure was unrelated to a designer stimulant. Demographic and clinical characteristics of cases were calculated and differences in outc

Self-poisoning with baclofen in alcohol-dependent patients: national reports to French Poison Control Centers, 2008-2013.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders are frequently associated with self-intoxication in attempted suicide. In France since 2008, the off-label use of baclofen for treatment of alcohol dependence has greatly increased, leading to temporary regulation of use of the drug. At the request of the national authorities, the French Poison Control Centers carried out a retrospective survey to give an overview of baclofen exposure in this population. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out from January 2008 to December 2013, focusing on baclofen exposures in alcohol-dependent patients managed by th

Relating calls to US poison centers for potential exposures to medications to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting of influenza-like illness.

CONTEXT: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) monitors influenza like illness (ILI) and the National Poison Data System (NPDS) warehouses call data uploaded by US poison centers regarding reported exposures to medication. OBJECTIVE: We examined the relationship between calls to poison centers regarding reported exposures to medications commonly used to treat ILI and weekly reports of ILI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CDC reports ILI, by age group, for each of 10 Health and Human Services (HHS) regions. We examined NPDS summary data from calls reported to poison centers regarding reported expo

Validation of the American Association of Poison Control Centers out of hospital guideline for pediatric diphenhydramine ingestions.

CONTEXT: In 2006, the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) published an out of hospital guideline for diphenhydramine overdoses in children. This guideline has not been validated. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the incidence of serious clinical effects or use of medical treatments after unintentional diphenhydramine ingestions in children. We sought to determine if patients with less than 7.5 mg/kg ingestions developed medical complications of diphenhydramine toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our observational case series, we searched 7 years of data (2000-2006

Acute ethylene chlorohydrin poisoning: experience of a poison control center.

BACKGROUND: Ethylene chlorohydrin (CAS 107-07-3), a chemical once used in hastening grape vine sprouting in Taiwan, has caused severe toxicity upon acute exposure. Although such use of ethylene chlorohydrin is now prohibited in Taiwan, poisoning still occurs following its illegal use. Since data concerning human ethylene chlorohydrin poisoning remain rare, we report our experience in treating acute ethylene chlorohydrin-poisoned patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted to evaluate patients with ethylene chlorohydrin poisoning reported to Taiwan Poison Control Center during 19

A 22-Year Retrospective Review of Carolina Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens) Plant Exposures Reported to 2 Poison Control Centers.

IntroductionCarolina jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens) is an evergreen vine containing highly toxic alkaloids that have caused human injury and death. Because this plant is similar to the honeysuckle plant, foraging errors are common.MethodsRetrospective review of all patients with G. sempervirens ingestions from 1/1/2000 to 4/20/2022 as reported to 2 poison centers that were followed for at least 2 hours post-ingestion. Demographics, clinical effects, intended use of the plant material, whether the plant material was heated, and the presence of case clustering were abstracted. Case outcomes

Intentional xylazine poisoning: a nationwide French poison control center study.

INTRODUCTION: Xylazine, an α2-adrenergic agonist used as a veterinary sedative, has emerged as an adulterant of illicit opioids, contributing to fatal overdoses in North America and has recently been detected in Europe. In France, despite alarmist media reports, data on xylazine exposures are scarce. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed intentional xylazine exposures reported to the eight French poison control centers from January 2010 to December 2024. Cases were extracted from the French National Database of Poisonings. Inclusion required intentional use; severity was assessed using the Poi

Severity of manchineel fruit (Hippomane mancinella) poisoning: A retrospective case series of 97 patients from French Poison Control Centers.

In this retrospective series of 97 cases of manchineel fruit ingestion reported to French Poison Control Centers between 2009 and 2017, we investigated cases of poisoning due to manchineel fruit (from the Hippomane mancinella tree). This fruit is known to be responsible for oropharyngeal and gastrointestinal tract lesions and possibly hypotension and bradycardia (previously attributed to the presence of physostigmine). The most commonly observed clinical signs were oropharyngeal pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea and oropharyngeal irritation. No major gastrointestinal tract lesions were observed i

COVID-19 and contamination: impact on exposures to alcohol-based hand sanitizers reported to Texas Poison Control Centers, 2020.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS), creating shortages leading to additional production by new, non-traditional manufacturers. In June 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warnings about methanol or 1-propanol contaminated brands of hand sanitizer. Exposure to methanol, including dermally, can cause kidney damage, blindness and death. Exposure to 1-propanol can cause severe acidosis and death. Chronic exposure may be more likely due to increased hand sanitizer use in 2020. METHODS: We used generic codes for ABHS to charac

Paraquat poisonings in France during the European ban: experience of the Poison Control Center in Marseille.

Paraquat, a widely used herbicide in the world, has caused severe and fatal poisonings. Because of its high toxicity, the European Union withdrew paraquat from its market in July 2007. The purpose of this report is to describe cases of paraquat poisoning recorded at the Poison Control Center in Marseille over the 9-year period starting and ending 4.5 years before and after the paraquat ban. Data analysis showed that the most severe exposures were linked to ingestion. The fatality rate of deliberate consumption was near 50 % (34 suicide attempts and 15 deaths). Our data showed a marginal declin
