Modes of governance and the ethnography of activism at the Mexico-US border.

Inspired by political philosophy, critical studies of border regimes often reduce human rights and relief work to some accomplice role in migratory control and surveillance. Drawing on ethnographic research on pro-migrant activism in Tijuana, a large city on Mexico's northern border, I contrast such critical literature on border policies with an anthropological approach to the study of organizations and bureaucracies. In particular, drawing attention to activists as providers of goods and services enables us to deal with activism as an ensemble of concrete actors, institutions, and practices.

Hypo-interventions: Intimate activism in toxic environments.

Chemical toxicity is part of everyday life in Puchuncaví. The most polluted industrial compound in Chile, Puchuncaví is home of fourteen industrial complexes, including the largest copper smelting plant in the country and four thermoelectric plants. Stories of biological mutation, corrosion and death among plants, humans, fishes and cattle are proliferate in Puchuncaví. Engaging with the growing interest in care and affective modes of attention within STS, this paper examines how ill, intoxicated or otherwise affected people in Puchuncaví act upon and know about their chronic sufferings. "Our Deaths--Your Shame." HIV Activism and the Rise of Autocratic Biopolitics in the Russian Federation.

This article examines the emergence of radical HIV activism in the Russian Federation through the case of the Front AIDS movement and its confrontation with established health care politics. Drawing on interviews, media sources, and policy analysis, it shows how activists challenged the system based on selective access to treatment and the coercive regulation of people who use drugs. Through direct public action, they reframed HIV and the right to live as a political issue. However, these actions encountered an emerging autocratic biopolitics that absorbed the epidemic into a securitized frame

The Emergence of Queer Iranian Counterpublics: Visibility and Care in Early Persian Queer Magazines, Homan and MAHA (1990s-2000s).

This article examines the emergence of Iranian queer counterpublics through an archival study of Homan (1990-2002), a diasporic print magazine, and MAHA (2004-2006), the digital e-magazine produced inside Iran. Through an archival reading of 49 issues, it traces how these magazines formed distinct yet interconnected queer counterpublic formations under divergent socio-political and technological conditions. Drawing on counterpublic theory, the article argues that Homan and MAHA represent a continuum and an evolving trajectory within the Iranian queer movement: Homan articulated an extroverted,

Eyes of the storm: Biographical disruption and political context of ocular trauma victims during the 2019 Chilean uprising.

This article investigates the profound impact of ocular trauma on victims of police repression during Chile's social uprising in October 2019. The uprising led to an unprecedented number of ocular trauma cases, similar to those seen in wartime, often resulting in various degrees of blindness. Utilizing the concept of biographical disruption, the study examines how the sudden onset of blindness disrupts daily life, compelling individuals to redefine their sense of self and their life narratives. A qualitative meta-analysis of testimonies reveals that this abrupt and violent loss of vision irrev

Public attention for private concerns: intellectual disability parents' organisations in the Republic of Ireland, 1955-1970.

This article examines the influence of intellectual disability 'parents and friends' organisations in the Republic of Ireland between 1955 and 1970, a period that coincided with the emergence of parental disability activism internationally. Drawing on their publications and activities, it argues that Irish groups adopted a significant, if circumscribed, response to 'learning disabilities' that was reflective of a broader political and social policy approach during the midcentury, with local organisations supporting parents of 'deficient' children and establishing key services across the countr

Contemporary antisemitism: Implications for cognitive behavioral therapy.

Recent political movements have been woven into therapy models that include specific ideas considered discriminatory towards Jews. Conceptualized around decolonial models of psychopathology, these frameworks include untested and unassailable assumptions regarding Zionism and Jewish identity that erode the scientific basis of existing evidence-based treatments. We discuss how this movement, with its additional emphasis on activism, promotes a modern form of antisemitism and identity-based discrimination. We conclude with recommendations for addressing this epistemic discrimination.

Political participation among deaf youth in Great Britain.

Variations in political participation are linked to demographic factors, socioeconomic disparities, and cultural-ethnic diversity. Existing research has primarily explored reduced political involvement among individuals with disabilities, particularly in electoral politics. However, little research has attended the involvement of deaf people specifically. This is of interest because deaf youth are at an intersection of disability, language and cultural identity with their language affiliations and rejection or acceptance of disability evolving through childhood. This study draws from original

Violations of human rights: health practitioners as witnesses.

For humanitarian health-care practitioners bearing witness to violations of human dignity has become synonymous with denunciations, human rights advocacy, or lobbying for political change. A strict reliance on legal interpretations of humanitarianism and human rights is inadequate for fully understanding the problems inherent in political change. With examples from the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the USA, the Rwandan genocide, and physician-led political activism in Nepal, we describe three cases in which health practitioners bearing witness to humanitarian and human-rights issues have had imperfect

Palimpsests of trans rights: trans-positive stickers and the contestations of transphobia in public space.

In recent years, the rights of trans people in the United Kingdom and elsewhere have been increasingly under scrutiny. This paper considers forms of resistance to Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminism (TERF) and neo-fascist gender conservative movements in Edinburgh, Scotland through an analysis of trans-positive stickers in public space. Using an archive of 461 images of trans-rights-related stickers photographed in Edinburgh between August 2018 and May 2022, we explore how trans-positive activism is publicly (en)countering transphobic politics and discourses. Our analysis begins by examining p

"And then, nothing": Alzheimer's archives and the good (enough) death.

This paper focuses on the author's mother, a subject whose ageing process was speeded and whose morality was challenged by the myriad and unpredictable effects of Alzheimer's disease. Using an archive of recorded conversations, the paper examines some of the existential questions with which the mother grappled until she lost the ability to speak. It considers these late ethical expressions in the context of her earlier political activism, marks her brief obsession with the possibility of assisted dying, and concludes by assessing the relative "goodness" of her very recent death in some of the

Power, participation, and patriarchy: a mixed-methods study of Palestinian women in political and public life with insights on health.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the extent and nature of Palestinian women’s political participation and leadership, highlighting the challenges they encounter in accessing and exercising power within political and public arenas. Despite formal policy advances, ongoing occupation, entrenched patriarchy, and political fragmentation continue to create significant barriers to meaningful political inclusion. Grounded in feminist institutionalism, the research analyzes how formal institutional frameworks and informal socio-cultural norms interact to shape women’s political engagement, while assessi

Lesbian/feminist orientation among male-to-female transsexuals.

Autobiographical case studies of two male-to-female transsexuals reveal a pattern of strong female identity couples with lesbian sexual-affectional preference and feminist value orientation. For both informants there is evidence of social concern and activism from an early age, which led them to perceive their gender dilemmas in a political as well as personal way. This case material challenge the notion that transsexuals are necessarily "sexualy Uncle Toms" and demonstrated that male-to-female transsexuals (like genetic women) can achieve an affirmative lesbian identity; it suggests more gene

The Relationship Between Empowerment and Mental Health Among the LGBTQ Population: A Scoping Review.

Due to discrimination and structural cisheteronormativity, the LGBTQ+ population faces high stress and mental health issues within both historical oppression and the current sociopolitical environment. The historical struggle for rights remains a key pathway to empowerment, a multidimensional process involving control, agency, and participation at intrapersonal, interpersonal/community, and sociopolitical levels. To map the scientific literature on the relationship between empowerment and the mental health of the LGBTQ population. A scoping review in accordance with the guidelines of the Joann

Reflections on activism, the academy and the Non-Profit Industrial Complex in Colombia: What a revolutionary ethos might look like.

This essay brings together different voices to reflect on several participatory research projects carried out in Colombia, based on human rights, 'empowerment', harm reduction, (im)mobility and forced migration, gendered and political violence, armed conflict, and the right to health of people in the social margins. We look back on nine years of activism to explore the foundations of what our friendships and relationships have come to know as a revolutionary ethos. We critically re-visit and reflect on the concept of 'the activist' in the realms of the human rights apparatus in Colombia, the a

Counterculture, Local Authorities and British Christianity at the Windsor and Watchfield Free Festivals (1972-5).

Four free pop festivals, held in Windsor and Watchfield in 1972-75, attracted significant public attention. This article discusses the aims and ideals of the festivalgoers, the confused reactions of the authorities, the ambivalence of the Anglican Church and the hostility of some conservative groups. We argue that the free festivals mark an important stage in the constitution of the counterculture and that they created a model which later pop festivals (in particular Glastonbury) attempt to emulate. We show that themes relating to a revival of the pilgrimage experience became important markers

The new identitarians: How the behavioral movement and psychology in general have been ideologically captured.

Recent developments within the mental health professions suggest a growing ideological capture by left-wing identitarian frameworks, with significant implications for clinical ethics, scientific integrity, and public health. This article argues that the increasing fusion of psychotherapy with political activism, particularly through the spread of decolonial therapy and related approaches, has contributed to discriminatory practices. This has led to identity-based discrimination toward Jewish clinicians and clients, specifically those who identify as Zionist. We argue that these frameworks impo

Assessment of a Newark neighborhood: process and outcomes.

In 1996, the members of the St. Columba Collaboration conducted a grassroots neighborhood assessment of a Hispanic area in Newark, New Jersey. This assessment was undertaken during an era of significant political and policy change in New Jersey. As a community-driven and implemented effort, the processes, methods, and outcomes of this assessment provide lessons on community activism, political awareness, and strategic planning. Quantitative surveys were distributed to local residents as well as users of the various services provided through Collaboration programs. Ten qualitative focus groups

Intersectional Discrimination of Romani Women Forcibly Sterilized in the Former Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic.

This paper reviews domestic and international activism seeking justice for Romani and other women harmed by coercive, forced, and involuntary sterilization in the former Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic. Framed by Michel Foucault's theory of biopower, it summarizes the history of these abuses and describes human rights campaigns involving domestic and international litigation, advocacy, and grassroots activism, as well as the responses of the Czech governments. The paper describes how legal and policy work during the past decade has led to recognition of coercive, forced, and involuntary ster

Similar but different: health and economic crisis in 1990s Cuba and Russia.

The collapse of the Soviet Bloc caused devastating economic crises in Cuba and in the Russian Federation but triggered remarkably different public health responses: while mortality rates in Russia increased substantially the crisis was barely visible in Cuban public health statistics. Fundamental social, political and cultural differences in the two countries and the respective specificities of the crisis in either country seem responsible, including different long-term health trajectories and different traditions of health-related agenda setting. Cuban policies combined traditional top down a
