The CDC's management and COVID-19 vaccine recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic: A healthcare worker's perspective.

The CDC's COVID-19 pandemic guidelines affected everyone, especially healthcare workers (HCWs) due to the high exposure risks, long hours and stress during the pandemic. Thus, understanding HCWs perceptions and acceptance of these guidelines were crucial to patient outcomes. Our goal was to investigate HCWs views on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) management of the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccine recommendations. Data were collected from an online survey of HCWs in Pennsylvania (August 2022 - February 2023). Eligible participants (n = 580) aged 21 + , reported COVID-19 vacci

Rethinking the antivaccine movement concept: A case study of public criticism of the swine flu vaccine's safety in France.

In this article I discuss the definition of "the Antivaccine Movement" using the case of the French controversy over the safety of the 2009 pandemic flu vaccine. I show that the group of main actors who criticized the vaccine's safety is heterogeneous. This heterogeneity can be found in the type of arguments mobilized to question the vaccine's safety and in these actors' likelihood of being involved in any vaccine-related controversies. I show that only a minority of these actors rejected vaccination in general and mobilized against all vaccination campaigns. Most of these actors only occasion

[Disembedding and remoralization. Old age security and intergenerational relations in globalized welfare capitalism].

The article reconstructs the changes in provision for old age since the 19th century with regard to the ensuing change in intergenerational relationships. The first finding is a broadening of the arenas of provision for old age, a historical cumulation of family (which is still relevant), welfare state and, increasingly, private provision in financial markets, adding up to a 'welfare mix' in old age. This implies a complexification of intergenerational relationships. The second finding is an ambivalent qualitative change: on the one hand relationships between generations become more anonymous

Politicising Recovery: Why Early Intervention Must Move Beyond the Imperative of Functioning.

AIM: To articulate the politicisation of recovery as a conceptual and clinical framework for early intervention in psychosis and to argue why the field must move beyond the imperative of functioning. OBSERVATION: Early intervention for ultra-high-risk states and first-episode psychosis has improved symptomatic outcomes, yet a persistent gap remains between remission and functional recovery, while social and environmental determinants shape both onset and course. This gap partly reflects an implicitly autoplastic model of recovery, helping young people adjust to social conditions that remain u

Pursuing Social Justice through Public Health: Gender and Sexual Diversity Activism in Malawi.

African lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) organizations face various strategic dilemmas in contexts characterized by political hostility to gender and sexual dissidents. In Malawi, one such context, we examine how an LGBTIQ social movement organization (SMO) in Malawi, the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP), navigated one particular strategic dilemma-the dilemma of whether to adopt a less politicized public-health approach or a more nimble, grassroots-oriented, and social-justice approach to their advocacy work-and the consequences of the organization'

Twice-in-a-Lifetime Pandemics: An Exploratory Qualitative Life-History Analysis of the Longitudinal Experiences of Hospital Chaplains Who Served During Both the Early AIDS (1981-1995) and Early COVID-19 (2020-2021) Pandemics in the USA and United Kingdom.

The aim of this study was to document the longitudinal experiences of chaplains who served during both the early AIDS (1981-1995) and early COVID-19 (2020-2021) pandemics. A total of 11 hospital chaplains were interviewed across the USA and the United Kingdom. Interviews were analyzed using a Grounded theory approach. Chaplains reported multiple stressors during both pandemics, including barriers to integration into care teams, tensions with home religions institutions, burnout, and challenges arising from the politicization of disease. Despite these challenges, chaplains play a vital role dur

Bureaucratic Violence and Health Disparities Research: A Florida Case Study of Institutional Responses to Anti-DEI Politics in Higher Education.

In the second Trump administration, federal officials have pursued political priorities that conflict with public health goals, including revising vaccination and nutritional guidelines in ways that contradict established science and terminating federally funded research grants. At the state level, similar political challenges have emerged, such as efforts to suspend mandatory school-entry vaccination requirements. Less attention has been paid to how academic institutions within these contexts may also contribute to politically driven public health harms. This essay provides a case study of an

Politics in psychiatry and psychotherapis in Japan with personal reflection; Is cognitive behavior therapy non-political?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is often presented as a technically neutral, evidence-based psychotherapy. This article questions that assumption by examining the political, institutional, and cultural contexts that have shaped psychiatry and psychotherapies in Japan, integrating historical review, administrative data, cross-national comparison, and personal reflection. First, the postwar development of Japanese psychiatry is reviewed, focusing on gradual mental health reform following the WHO "Clark Recommendation" and the politicized professional climate of the late 1960s and 1970s. Prisoner releases in postcolonial Uganda: Power, politics, and the public.

This article examines prisoner releases in postcolonial Uganda, focusing on the period between independence in 1962 and the inauguration of Yoweri Museveni in 1986. During these decades, Uganda's government enacted over 30 large scale releases of prisoners and detainees, affecting approximately 20,000 individuals. These acts of clemency were highly politicized and frequently occurred during times of political transition or tension. While framed by Uganda's leaders and the official media as gestures of goodwill and symbols of progress, these releases ultimately reinforced executive power and th

Policy-Relevant Attitudes Toward COVID-19 Vaccination: Associations With Demography, Health Risk, and Social and Political Factors.

Background: Vaccination is considered to be a key public health intervention to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the success of the intervention is contingent on attitudes toward vaccination and the design of vaccination policies. Methods: We conduct cross-sectional analyses of policy-relevant attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination using survey data of a representative sample of Austrian residents collected by the Austrian Corona Panel Project (ACPP). As outcomes, we examine the individual readiness to get vaccinated, the support for compulsory vaccinations, and the preference for making the vac

How the unvaccinated have been portrayed in the urban English-language Canadian popular press since the declared end of the COVID-19 pandemic emergency.

Since the WHO declared the end of the COVID-19 emergency in May 2023, public vaccination remains a complex issue intertwined with politicization and misinformation. This research article examined how the "unvaccinated" have been portrayed in the urban English-language Canadian popular press between May 2023 and May 2025, specifically comparing coverage of COVID-19 with the emerging 2024-2025 measles outbreaks. Through a content analysis of 308 articles from major national and urban news sources, the study reveals a dichotomy in journalistic framing. Findings indicate that COVID-19 reporting re

Local Responses to Limits on U.S. Public Health Authority During the COVID-19 Emergency.

Public health has become politicized in the U.S. Though research shows that limiting public health authority during emergency response puts community wellbeing and health outcomes at risk, during the COVID-19 emergency (2020-2021), some U.S. state policymakers limited the disease-preventing actions local public health agencies could take. This conflicts with public health agencies' mandate to protect lives. Using COVID-19 as a case study, we explored how local public health agencies upheld their mandate when faced with limited public health authority. We conducted qualitative semi-structured f

Beyond Wishful Thinking during the COVID-19 Pandemic: How Hope Reduces the Effects of Death Arousal on Hostility toward Outgroups among Conservative and Liberal Media Users for COVID-19 Information.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made death more salient to individuals, which has partly contributed to the amplification of hostility toward others who have different perspectives from oneself. Recognizing that the politicization of COVID-19 and the resulting polarization have become increasingly critical issues, this study investigates how death-related thinking and hope about the pandemic can affect hostility toward outgroups as well as how conservative and liberal media usages moderate the indirect effects of hope. An online survey experiment of people in the U.S. (N = 759) during the pandemic s

Neurasthenia, psy sciences and the 'great leap forward' in Maoist China.

The present study looks into the much-neglected history of neurasthenia in Maoist China in relation to the development of psy sciences. It begins with an examination of the various factors that transformed neurasthenia into a major health issue from the late 1950s to mid-1960s. It then investigates a distinctive culture of therapeutic experiment of neurasthenia during this period, with emphasis on the ways in which psy scientists and medical practitioners manoeuvred in a highly politicized environment. The study concludes with a discussion of the legacy of these neurasthenia studies - in parti

[Between gender and health technologies: an analysis of HPV and cervical cancer prevention campaigns from 2014 to 2020].

In this article an analysis of the preventive campaigns against cervical cancer (CC) and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination developed by the National Cancer Institute (INCA) of the Ministry of Health was conducted, in addition to some campaigns produced by non-governmental organizations and private institutions, from 2014 to 2020. From a socio-anthropological point of view, the objective was to understand how these health technologies trigger and produce gender representations. Seven categories of analysis were developed ("Generationality of care", "Schooling", "Childhood and Youth", "Gami

["Infectious disease" theory during the Japanese Shogunate: an analysis of "Ichikawa Hashimoto-Hakuju-cho Dandoku-ron Ikken"].

Dandoku-ron (Treatise on Eliminating Poisons), written at the beginning of the 19th century by Hakuju Hashimoto, a doctor from Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture), is said to be the first book written by a Japanese author who "treated infectious diseases by means of modern concepts." Hashimoto acquired the ideas for his "infectious disease" theory through his own observations and experience. These ideas, suggesting that tangible poisons--not epidemics or congenital eczema--caused diseases such as smallpox, measles, syphilis, and scabies, were fresh and original at the time. The originality that Hashimo

Reparation, rights, and dissidence: a qualitative study of feminist advocacy for legal, safe, and free abortion in Ecuador.

This article investigates the political practices related to abortion in Ecuador from their politicisation in 2006 until 2023, two years after the decriminalisation of abortion in all rape cases. We identify: (1) the discursive and embodied practices that construct and politicise the aborting body within feminist advocacy for legal, safe, and free abortion in Ecuador; (2) the effects of these practices; and (3) feminist challenges to conservative discourses that, in some cases, appropriate their rhetorical strategies. Based on participant observations of feminist demonstrations and the analysi

Talking About the Anti-Trans Sociopolitical Climate with Transgender and Gender Diverse Children and Their Caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) children and adolescents in the United States are currently experiencing an oppressive sociopolitical climate that is likely impacting their mental wellbeing. TGD children, defined as 5- to 10-year-olds, have the capacity to be aware of the anti-trans sociopolitical climate and, within the context of developmental readiness, TGD children and their caregivers may benefit from having conversations about the sociopolitical climate with a mental health provider. However, there are no clinical guidelines for how mental health providers may approach c

Real-time tracking must be at the core of sustainable development goals.

How close are we to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs)? No one really knows. As the world enters the countdown to 2030, uncertainty remains. Progress remains fragmented, hindered by data gaps, opaque governance, and politicization that limits scientific communication and real-time policy adaptation. Limitations reveal the need to rethink how sustainability is measured, reported, and governed. Using the SDGs, we argue that monitoring systems fail to capture real-time dynamics, leaving humanity rudderless amid sustainability crises. In an era of big data, future sustainability ag

"I was Where I Needed to be": The Rural Health Care Workforce Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

More information is needed on how to recruit and retain rural health professionals, especially during times of crisis. In this article, we explore the experiences of rural health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and allied health professionals in the state of Minnesota from 2023 to 2024 (n = 17) and used iterative thematic analysis to identify key themes. Two key themes emerged from our analysis as challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic: staffing shortages and the politicization
