Molecular Origins of Nonfrozen Water in Polyelectrolyte Brushes.

Polyelectrolyte brushes (PEBs) are promising coatings for reducing ice adhesion and regulating water freezing at interfaces, yet direct measurements of nonfrozen water retention at subzero temperatures remain scarce. Here, we investigate the freezing behavior of water confined in poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium) (PMETA) brushes with chloride, iodide, and sulfate counterions using a custom-built low-temperature attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy system. Furthermore, we quantify the fraction of water that was present within the brush that does not freeze as well

Lower charge, higher order: Revising electrostatic control of nematic phases in 2D polyelectrolytes.

Classical theories of nematic ordering in charged platelets predict that increasing surface charge stabilizes alignment. They also predict enhanced alignment when ionic strength is reduced. Here, in agreement with established theories, we show that in graphene oxide (GO) and related two-dimensional polyelectrolytes, nematic order and structural color emerge as surface charge density is reduced, concomitant with a decrease in self-generated ionic strength and an increase in the effective range of electrostatic repulsion. Using a minimal model combining counterion-only Poisson-Boltzmann electros

Study on the interaction between nitroxide free radical and conjugated polyelectrolytes by fluorimetry.

In this work, we studied the fluorescence quenching of the anionic conjugated polyelectrolyte PPE-SO(3) by the paramagnetic species 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxide free radical (TEMPO) in aqueous solution. At low quencher concentration the Stern-Volmer constant is 94 mol/L; as the quencher concentration increases the Stern-Volmer plots become superlinear. Ascorbic acid is used to reduce TEMPO to the corresponding hydroxylamine and the PPE-SO(3) fluorescence is fully recovered. Under a large excess of ascorbic acid over TEMPO, the rise of fluorescence followed pseudo-first-order kinetics.

Polyelectrolyte-Based Platforms for the Delivery of Peptides and Proteins.

The use of peptides and proteins in the pharmaceutical field has increased dramatically over recent years. They have been especially relevant to advances in the treatment of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, leukemia, and cardiovascular, ophthalmological, metabolic, and infectious diseases. Despite the great potential of peptides and proteins, their use in pharmaceuticals has failed to reach its full potential because of some outstanding challenges. They are unstable under storage conditions and in biological milieus, and their high molecular weight limits permeation through biological membranes.

Multifunctional polyelectrolyte microparticles for oral insulin delivery.

Multicomponent insulin-containing microparticles are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly of dextran sulfate and chitosan on the core of protein-polyanion complex with or without protease inhibitors. Oral bioavailability of the encapsulated insulin is improved due to the cumulative effect of each component. A physico-chemical study shows that the particle design allows adjustment of the pH-dependent profile of the insulin release, as well as mucoadhesive properties and Ca(2+) binding ability of the microparticles. Supplementing the microparticles with 2-3% protease inhibitors fully prevents pro

Layer-by-Layer Assembled Polyelectrolytes on Ta3N5 Pyramid Arrays for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

Ta3N5 is a promising material for overall water splitting due to its suitable band positions and high theoretical photocurrent (12.9 mA cm-2). However, pristine Ta3N5 suffers from significant optical, recombination, and resistive losses, resulting in photocurrents and efficiencies far below theoretical expectations. To address these limitations, this work focuses on enhancing photocurrent and overall performance through structural and morphological engineering and surface functionalization. We investigated the potential of polyelectrolytes, poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) with anionic gr

Morphology and Properties of Crystalline Polyelectrolytes: Poly(alkyleneimidazolium TFSI)s with Varying Alkylene Lengths.

The morphology and crystallization behavior of imidazolium ionenes as crystalline polyelectrolytes, poly(alkylene imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide)) (PCmIm-TFSI) with varying methylene units (m), were systematically investigated. PCmIm-TFSI, with m ranging from two to six, demonstrated thermoplastic properties and formed spherulites upon melt crystallization. The melting point (Tm) and radial growth rate of the spherulites (G) exhibited a marked dependence in the value of m, with Tm decreasing by approximately 40 °C, and the maximum values of G reducing to one-tenth or less as incre

[The study of the antiviral activity of polyelectrolytes with respect to the influenza virus].

It is well known that polyelectrolytes (PE) have a damaging effect on the secondary structure of the proteins and enzymes. It is also known that some PEs exert an immunostimulating action on T- and B-lymphocytes. However, currently, almost nothing is known about the impact of the PE of the viral proteins and viral envelope. Therefore, a detailed study of the mechanisms of the antiviral action of various polyelectrolytes would create the scientific-practical base for the construction of the antiviral drugs on the polyelectrolyte basis. In these works, for the first time the influence of PE poly

C-H Activation-Based Multicomponent Polyannulations toward Fluorescent Heteroaromatic Polyelectrolytes for Sunlight-Driven Antibacterial Coatings.

The development of facile and efficient synthetic methods for functional polyelectrolytes bearing charges on main chains is an important, yet challenging task. Herein, we develop a straightforward C-H activation-based multicomponent polyannulation method that can efficiently transform readily available internal diynes, aldehydes, and amines into diverse functional main-chain charged polyelectrolytes with high molecular weights (Mw up to 55000 g/mol) in high yields of up to 99.2%. Multisubstituted polycyclic heteroaromatic cations are generated in situ in polymer backbones as π spacers via succ

Stretchable Water-Free Liquid Crystalline Polyelectrolyte Complexes.

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs), formed by electrostatic association of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, are promising low-environmental-impact materials. However, their extreme brittleness in the absence of water and a general lack of stimuli-responsive functionality severely limit practical applications. Here, we introduce a strategy to overcome both limitations by designing liquid crystalline polyelectrolyte complexes (LCPECs). Main-chain liquid crystalline (LC) polyanions with systematically varied charge densities and neutral flexible domains are first synthesized via a facile one-po

Polyelectrolyte Complex Coacervate Adhesive for Wearable Medical Devices.

Wearable electronics are becoming increasingly popular for personalized healthcare. These devices often use hydrophobic, pressure-sensitive adhesives to adhere to various parts of the body. With prolonged skin contact, commercial adhesives have been shown to cause allergic contact dermatitis as well as significant loss of adhesive strength when exposed to moisture and ionic compounds, such as sweat. To address these common issues, the development of a polyelectrolyte-based skin adhesive for wearable devices is underway. Here, it is demonstrated how coacervation is induced with a system compose

Nebulization of a polyelectrolyte-drug system for systemic hypertension treatment.

Hypertension is a chronic pathology where blood pressure levels are continuously high, causing cardiac, renal, cerebral, and vascular damage leading to early morbi-mortality. This illness is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and the main cause of atrial fibrillation. Atenolol (AT) is a β-1 blocker drug useful for antihypertension and antiarrhythmic treatments. However, this drug possesses low oral bioavailability associated to its low permeability and extensive hepatic first-pass metabolism. To solve the conventional AT-administration problems, oral controlled-release and transd

The oral delivery of proteins using interpolymer polyelectrolyte complexes.

In spite of the numerous barriers inherent in the oral delivery of therapeutically active proteins, research into the development of functional protein-delivery systems is still intense. The effectiveness of such oral protein-delivery systems depend on their ability to protect the incorporated protein from proteolytic degradation in the GI tract and enhance its intestinal absorption without significantly compromising the bioactivity of the protein. Among these delivery systems are polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) which are composed of polyelectrolyte polymers complexed with a protein via coulo

Magnetic resonance imaging of contrast-enhanced polyelectrolyte complexes.

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) assembled from oppositely charged polymers were endowed with gadolinium (Gd) and evaluated to determine cytotoxicity and magnetic resonance image (MRI) contrast enhancement in vivo. Chitosan grafted with Gd diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) was electrostatically complexed with dextran sulfate, producing particles of about 300 nm possessing a negative surface charge. Alternatively, Gd was ionically trapped within PECs by mixing PECs (with or without Gd-DTPA graft) with gadolinium chloride (GdCl(3)). Combinations of these two approaches for including Gd r

Aerosol Delivery of Polyelectrolyte Surfactant-Antimicrobial Nanoparticles to the Lungs.

BACKGROUND: Lung infections affect over 80% of adults with cystic fibrosis, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa being a leading pathogen. Although antibiotics are frequently nebulized as standard treatments, the physicochemical environment of the diseased lung often limits their diffusion and overall effectiveness. Our previous studies showed polyelectrolyte surfactants (PS) to be a promising delivery system for cationic antimicrobials in vitro. This study seeks to expand that knowledge by evaluating their potential for nebulized delivery. METHODS: To achieve this, we evaluated their size and antimic

Tuning Permeability and Transport in Polyelectrolyte Membranes: The Role of Countercations.

Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) are widely utilized in membrane technologies, biosensing, and drug delivery, where precise control over permeability, which refers to the ease of transport through the multilayer, is essential. While the influence of anions on PEMs is well-documented, the role of countercations in regulating transport properties through films remains underexplored. Here, we investigate the effects of sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) countercations on the formation, structure, permeability, and transport properties of PAH/PSS and PDADMAC/PSS multilayers. Using a quartz crystal

Polyelectrolyte Complexes from Oppositely Charged Filamentous Viruses.

Here, we present an explorative study on a new type of polyelectrolyte complex made from chemically modified filamentous fd viruses. The fd virus is a semiflexible rod-shaped bacteriophage with a length of 880 nm and a diameter of 6.6 nm, which has been widely used as a well-defined model system of colloidal rods to investigate phase, flow, and other behavior. Here, chemically modified viruses have been prepared to obtain two types with opposite electrical charges in addition to a steric stabilization layer by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) grafting.
