Polypharmacy in Patients with Ovarian Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Polypharmacy has been associated with morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer. Data about polypharmacy among patients with ovarian cancer are limited. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate polypharmacy in a cohort of patients with ovarian cancer and to assess the evolution of polypharmacy from initial presentation to 2 years posttreatment. A secondary objective was to evaluate differences in polypharmacy between a subset of patients primarily treated in our comprehensive cancer center (CCC) and our safety net hospital (SNH). METHODS: Women treated for ovarian

Polypharmacy in the Geriatric Oncology Population.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review explores the multiple definitions, epidemiology, and impact of polypharmacy in geriatric oncology patients. Risk factors and clinical implications of polypharmacy are delineated and potential clinical approaches to reduce polypharmacy are reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS: Most sources currently define polypharmacy as the administration of multiple medications that are non-essential, unnecessary, duplicative, or ineffective. Possible risk factors associated with polypharmacy in geriatric cancer patients include comorbid conditions, prescribing cascades, and hospitalizat

Polypharmacy in glaucoma management: a narrative review.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Treatment for glaucoma is typically lifelong and often requires multiple antiglaucoma medications (polypharmacy) to adequately control intraocular pressure, prevent disease progression, and preserve vision. While polypharmacy can enhance disease management, it also raises concerns about its potential long-term negative effects on patients; METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes recent literature from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and references published between January 2015 and October 2025 to examine the impact of polypharmacy on

Aging with HIV: multimorbidity and polypharmacy burden.

BACKGROUND: Aging people living with HIV (PLWH) are at higher risk of multimorbidity and polypharmacy, complicating care. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and risk factors of multimorbidity and polypharmacy in elderly PLWH on antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, PLWH aged ≥50 were compared with age- and sex-matched people without HIV. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of polypharmacy. RESULTS: Multimorbidity (≥2 chronic conditions) was seen in 29% of PLWH and 22% of controls. Osteoporosis (9.5% vs. 2.3%) and psychiatric disorders (9.5% vs

Polypharmacy in a Patient With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is an uncommon condition and its clinical manifestation in adulthood includes central obesity, hypogonadism, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and sleep apnea. These patients often have mild to moderate intellectual disability and are dependent upon their caregiver for healthcare needs. Hence, they may be at increased risk of polypharmacy-related complications, if there is poor communication between healthcare providers and caregivers. We present a case of a 26-year-old adult with PWS and mild to moderate intellectual disability, who was found

The challenge of HIV treatment in an era of polypharmacy.

INTRODUCTION: The availability of potent antiretroviral therapy has transformed HIV infection into a chronic disease such that people living with HIV (PLWH) have a near normal life expectancy. However, there are continuing challenges in managing HIV infection, particularly in older patients, who often experience age-related comorbidities resulting in complex polypharmacy and an increased risk for drug-drug interactions. Furthermore, age-related physiological changes may affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of both antiretrovirals and comedications thereby predisposing elderly to ad

[Polypharmacy and drug interactions in elderly patients].

Although the definition of polypharmacy is not yet clear today, it is generally regarded as drug use more than the patient needs. Advanced age is the most important risk factor for polypharmacy. In addition, other risk factors are loss of current cognitive functions, low socioeconomic level and nursing care. It is seen in about 40% of people over 75 years of age worldwide, varying between countries of extreme poverty. Incorrect drug use, drug side effects and drug-drug interaction lead to unwanted hospitalizations. In particular, cardiovascular drugs pose risks in terms of drug side effects in

Polypharmacy in Adults With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Estimates of polypharmacy among US adults with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-a relatively young and disproportionately minoritized population-remain sparse. We sought to estimate the prevalence of polypharmacy in SLE and identify the most common medications used. METHODS: For this cross-sectional study, participants were recruited from a population-based cohort of adults with validated SLE in Atlanta, Georgia. Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications were self-reported at the study visit. Polypharmacy was defined as five or more prescription or OTC medications. Esti

Aspects of Polypharmacy in Dental Treatment of Seniors.

BACKGROUND: Due to demographic changes, the task of dental treatment for older patients is increasing. The aim of this study was to record polypharmacotherapy in elderly patients undergoing dental-prosthetic treatment. In addition, it was hypothesized that patients with removable dentures have a higher polypharmacy rate than patients with fixed dentures. METHODS: In a prospective and observational study, 103 patients aged 70 years and over were included. Age, gender, and the type of denture were recorded. Daily medication was charted using a questionnaire and patients' medication plan. The me

Polypharmacy in Older Adults: A Case Study.

Polypharmacy is defined as concurrent use of multiple drugs for one or more conditions. The occurrence of polypharmacy in vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, is frequent. Increased incidents of adverse drug reactions and drug-drug interactions plus high costs are not offset by a noticeable improvement in outcome. The practice of polypharmacy persists despite frequent adverse outcomes and reduced effectiveness. We present a case in which an elderly woman presented with falls and delirium. She was taking multiple medications for anxiety and depression in addition to several psychoa

The management of polypharmacy in people living with HIV.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has modified the prognosis of HIV which has evolved into a chronic condition. People living with HIV (PLWH) are living longer presenting an increased number of comorbidities leading to polypharmacy. Literature on the prevalence, associated factors, drug-drug interactions (DDIs), effects on ART-outcomes, geriatric conditions, and nutritional status together with health-interventions aimed to reduce it is presented in this review. A literature search was conducted on the MEDLINE database for all relevant English- and Spanish-language studies since 2006. Studies provi

[Polypharmacy and medication review in the context of prehabilitation].

Against the background of typical geriatric multimorbidity and with the particular vulnerability of geriatric patients, polypharmacy deserves special attention. In accordance with the guidelines, medication should not only be reviewed regularly, but also on an ad hoc basis and with each hospital stay-and also in the context of prehabilitation. Thus, not only substances that interfere with the currently planned intervention, anesthesia, or risk of bleeding should be considered, but any medication that increases common risks for geriatric patients. These include drugs that cause or increase a te

Polypharmacy of osteoarthritis: the perfect intestinal storm.

Osteoarthritis is an increasingly prevalent disorder with an incidence rate that rises sharply with age. Unfortunately, the most commonly used medications for providing symptomatic relief, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can cause significant gastrointestinal (GI) ulceration. There is recent evidence that agents commonly employed to protect the upper GI tract actually increase the incidence and severity of ulceration and bleeding in the lower intestine. Intestinal injury is more difficult to diagnose and treat than upper GI damage, and symptoms correlate poorly with the severity

Effects of polypharmacy on sleep in psychiatric inpatients.

The relationship between psychotropic drugs and sleep remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined the relationship between the number (and dosage) of concurrently-taken antipsychotic medications and sleep in a psychiatric inpatient population. Eighty-three long-stay inpatients with severe mental disorders were administered the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI). Results showed that increasing antipsychotics dosages were linked to better sleep, although antipsychotic medications only accounted for a relatively small amount of the variance in sleep quality. The results

Polypharmacy and the role of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing practices lead to higher rates of mortality and morbidity, particularly in vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with complex medical conditions. Physical medicine and physiatrists face particular challenges given the array of symptoms treated across a spectrum of conditions. This clinical review focuses on polypharmacy and the associated issue of potentially inappropriate prescribing. The article begins with a review of polypharmacy along with relevant aspects of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the elderly. The adverse effect

Polypharmacy and EPS in a child; a case report.

Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPSs) (dystonic reaction, rigidity, and akathisia) occur as a result of D2 receptor blockade. Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been reported to induce extrapyramidal signs and symptoms but tricyclic antidepressants have been rarely reported. Among the side effects attributed to valproic acid administration, the production of EPS is very rare, particularly in children. In this paper we present a case (10-year-old girl) under multiple pharmacologic treatment who developed EPSs (oculogyric crisis) shortly after the adjunct of imipramine to a combinatio
