Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) is an uncommon autoimmune disease that results in substantial photosensitivity of affected patients. Eruptions often are triggered or exacerbated by UV light (UVL) exposure. We present a case of a patient with SCLE who was moderately controlled with hydroxychloroquine sulfate but achieved near total remission of disease after the addition of oral Polypodium leucotomos supplement which has photoprotective effects on human keratinocytes. We report sustained clinical response with the use of P leucotomos in lupus and suggest that it may have future ap

BACKGROUND: Melanoma is a malignant tumor that originates from the skin's melanocytes and has the highest death rate from skin cancer. Developing more efficacious anticancer medications with fewer adverse effects is the key to effective cancer management. Natural products are considered relevant and cost-effective sources of treatment. The plant (Polypodium vulgare) is a small and evergreen fern. One of the most important chemical compounds in the extract of this herb is flavonoids, which are thought to have beneficial effects in the treatment of melanoma through antioxidant properties.

Dietary supplements are commonly recommended by dermatologists in the treatment of skin, hair, and nail disorders. This review of oral over-the-counter supplement use in dermatology summarizes current evidence for the use of zinc, biotin, vitamin D, nicotinamide, and Polypodium in the management of common dermatologic disorders. Evidence for the safety and efficacy of these supplements is limited. Very few large-scale randomized controlled trials exist for these over-the-counter supplements, particularly biotin and Polypodium. The lack of standardized dosing and standardized outcome measures m

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratoses (AKs) are a common premalignant skin condition. Many treatments are available for AKs. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the most effective treatments. However, major concerns exist on the possibility of PDT-induced DNA-mutagenesis/immunosuppression, leading to AKs recurrence/treatment failure. An extract (PLE) from the fern polypodium leucotomos reduces UV-induced immunosuppression and mutagenesis.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of PLE to enhance the efficacy of PDT treatment, reducing AKs recurrence on the scalp.

BACKGROUND: The use of psoralen-UVA (PUVA) in patients of skin phototype I to II is limited by side effects of acute phototoxicity and possible long-term carcinogenesis.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess oral Polypodium leucotomos (PL) extract in decreasing PUVA-induced phototoxicity of human skin on a clinical and histologic level.
METHODS: A total of 10 healthy patients with skin phototypes II to III were exposed to PUVA alone (using 0.6 mg/kg oral 8-methoxypsoralen) and to PUVA with 7.5 mg/kg of oral PL.
RESULTS: Clinically, phototoxicity was always lower in PL-treated skin after 48 to 72 h

BACKGROUND: Polypodium leucotomos (PL) exerts potent antioxidant, photo-protective, and immune-modulatory activities. A reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) (Episkin) is a suitable model for the evaluation of acute UV-induced cell damage. No data regarding the photo-protective action of PL in this model are available.
PURPOSE: We evaluated the effects of PL on the prevention of UVB-induced cell damage assessing sunburn cells, CPD formation, p53, Ki-67, p21 expression, and epidermal growth factor (EGF) production.
MATERIALS & METHODS: RHE was incubated in standard conditions. PL was topically

Vandetanib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of metastatic medullary thyroid cancer. It has been linked to a variety of dermatologic reactions, including photosensitivity. We describe the case of a 55-year-old man who developed a severe, painful, erythematous, bullous eruption in sun-exposed areas one month after the initiation of vandetanib. The eruption was initially refractory to treatment with steroids and did not resolve with strict sun avoidance, but finally cleared after a few weeks of oral supplementation with Po

PREMISE: Polypodium pellucidum, a fern endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, encompasses five ecologically and morphologically variable subspecies, suggesting a complex history involving both rapid divergence and rampant hybridization.
METHODS: We employed a large target-capture data set to investigate the evolution of genetic, morphological, and ecological variation in P. pellucidum. With a broad sampling across five Hawaiian Islands, we deciphered the evolutionary history of P. pellucidum, identified nonhybrid lineages and intraspecific hybrids, and inferred the relative influence of geography a

The acute reactions of human skin to solar ultraviolet radiation (290-400 nm) are recognized as a form of inflammation reactions that are mediated by several possible mechanisms including (a) direct action of photons on DNA, (b) generation of reactive free radicals and reactive oxygen species involving the formation of O2.-, 1O2, H2O2, OH, etc., (c) generation of prostaglandins (PGD2, PGE2, etc.), histamine, leucotrienes, and other inflammatory mediators. It is conceivable that UV-induced reactions represent oxidative stress mediated by the formation of free radicals, reactive oxygen, lipid pe

Introduction: Oral cancer refers to malignant tumors, of which 90% are squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs). These malignancies exhibit rapid progression, poor prognosis, and often mutilating therapeutical approaches. The determination of a prophylactic and/or therapeutic antitumor role of the polyphenolic extract Polypodium leucotomos(PL) would be relevant in developing new tools for prevention and treatment. Methods: We aimed to determine the antitumor effect of PL by treating OSCC cell lines with PL metabolites and evaluating its action during OSCC progression in vivo. Results: PL treatment suc

Polypodium leucotomos displayed a synergic effect with NB-UVB in psoriasis, but its application on vitiligo remains understudied. The aim of this study was to investigate whether oral supplementation with leaves extract of Polypodium leucotomos (PL) improves narrow band (NB) UVB phototherapy-induced repigmentation. Forty-four patients with generalized vitiligo were enrolled in this randomized, prospective, placebo controlled study. Twenty-three patients were randomly selected to receive combined treatment with NB-UVB phototherapy and 480 mg oral PL twice daily while 21 patients received NB-UVB

OBJECTIVES: Cerebral ischemic stroke is a leading cause of death worldwide. Though timely reperfusion reduces the infarction size, it exacerbates neuronal apoptosis due to oxidative stress. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a transcription factor regulating the expression of antioxidant enzymes. Activating Nrf2 gives a therapeutic approach to ischemic stroke.
METHODS: Herein we explored flavonoids identified from Polypodium hastatum as Nrf2 activators and their protective effects on PC12 cells injured by oxygen and glucose deprivation/restoration (OGD/R) as well as middle
