Sequential development of electron miscrosopic changes in the rabbit parathyroid gland was monitered during induction of parathyroiditis by 48 hours of ozone 0.75 ppm dosage regimen. By 4 to 7 days, electron microscopy revealed prominence of polyribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, secretory granules, microtubules, and frequent infoldings of the plasma membrane. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was given for 3 days after elective abdominal surgery. The control group (N = 9) received TPN only and one group of patients (N = 6) received TPN supplemented with ornithine-alpha-ketoglutarate (0.35 g/kg bw/day). Patients (N = 8) with chronic renal failure and uremia treated with hospital hemodialysis were in a pilot study investigated before and after a single hemodialysis session. Stabilization of mRNA is important in the regulation of CYP2a5 expression but the factors involved in the process are not known [Aida and Negishi (1991) Biochemistry 30, 8041-8045]. Excessive production of nitric oxide (NO) due to the overinduction of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) has a severe cytotoxic effect, which may relate to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders. HuR, a member of the ELAV family of AU-rich RNA-binding proteins, is present in a variety of tissues and is directly involved in stabilizing labile AU-rich messenger RNAS: We have found that treating the human HepG2 cell line with 10 nM dihydrotestosterone (DHT) for 48 h decreases the total level of HuR by 75%. This study describes an ultrastructural examination focused on motor neurons in Onuf's nucleus in the spinal cord of four control patients without neurological disease (45-70 years) and six motor neuron disease (MND) patients (38-79 years; duration 8 months-19 years) who showed no somato-vesical dysfunction.
