Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is an uncommon pathological entity, due to segmental popliteal artery compression by the surrounding myofascial structures. Clinical symptoms may appear acutely, with temporary ischemic attacks, or chronically, with claudicatio intermittens of the involved calf and for 30% bilateral. Treatment, generally, is surgical by simple freeing of the popliteal artery from the surrounding myofascial structures or by autologous vein (saphenous v.) interposition grafting and patching, or bypass without vessel resection. The case of a 44-year female with left cal

A case of popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is reported. A non smoker, 63-year-old man, consulted for severe claudication of the lower limb, with a sudden onset. There was no past history of vascular disease. Neither the arteriography nor the arterial doppler led to definite diagnosis. In our case, only the C.T. scan was contributive to the diagnosis. The age, 63, at which this abnormality became symptomatic, the abrupt appearance of ischaemic symptoms and the embryologic type of the arterial stenosis were particular. The surgical management was the only therapeutic option.

OBJECTIVE: In a retrospective study we analyze 5 patients with popliteal artery entrapment syndrome who were treated since 1999 to 2000 in our department.
METHODS AND RESULTS: 5 patients were found to have popliteal vascular entrapment during a two-year period. From the total number of 5 patients, we performed surgery in 3 patients (5 operations). One patient rejected proposed surgical therapy, in another case the morphological lesion of the popliteal artery was not suitable for revascularisation. 3 patients underwent interposition of the diseased popliteal artery using a venous graft from a

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is a well recognised sequelae of anatomical variation in the origin of the medial head of gastrocnemius. It classically presents with distal ischaemia from progressive intimal fibrosis and eventual thrombosis. We present a unique case of acute lower limb ischaemia precipitated by trauma in a young man with undiagnosed popliteal artery entrapment. In this case sudden stress of the lower limb resulted in tearing of the tunica intima of the entrapped artery and exposure of the subendothelium with subsequent thrombus, distal embolisation and acute ischaemia. A variety of anatomical abnormalities may product an external compression of the popliteal artery, resulting in a thrombotic occlusion. Between 1983 and 1995, 9 patients presented a popliteal artery entrapment syndrome, bilateral in two cases. Ultrasonography, Angio-CT scan and MRI showed the abnormal structures and position of the popliteal artery on popliteal fossa. Arteriography detected an arterial compression in 6 limbs and occlusion in 4 limbs as well as an associated popliteal aneurysm in one patient and distal embolism in four. The abnormal medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle was r

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is a condition in which compression of the popliteal neurovascular structures results in symptoms of lower extremity claudication by way of a constricting anatomic structure or a hypertrophied surrounding musculature. This diagnosis is often missed or misdiagnosed because popliteal artery entrapment syndrome has a presentation similar to that of exertional compartment syndrome. Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome may result in persistent disability or unnecessary morbidity or prevent athletes' return to sport. A female collegiate athlete presented with bil

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome accounts for an important part of correctible causes of claudication and limb ischemia in young people. It is caused by an abnormal relation between the popliteal artery (PA) and the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle. The diagnosis should be considered in any patient under 50 with calf claudication. The mainstay of treatment is prevention of PA fibrosis because if left untreated, the syndrome leads to irreversible damage to the PA with thrombosis and limb ischemia. We describe two cases of different types in 21- and 27-year-old males, respectively, an

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is recognized as a cause of lower leg claudication in patients younger than 50 years of age. We report a rare case of a patient with bilateral popliteal artery entrapment who presented with the same symptom 11 years after his first experience of popliteal artery entrapment syndrome. On both occasions, the surgery was performed in a similar manner and the patient was free from symptoms after the surgery. Since the diagnosis of popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is difficult, early detection of popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is important to prevent it

In a retrospective review of 74 cases of Popliteal Entrapment Syndrome collected over a 16 year period, 10 cases of aneurysm were found (13.5%). This represents an incidence of 26% of the 38 cases of popliteal aneurysm of any etiology seen during the same period of time. In contrast to atherosclerotic aneurysms, these aneurysms were seen in a young age group (21-30 years of age) and all were associated with popliteal entrapment. Evidence is presented to support our opinion that these aneurysms are post-stenotic in origin. We feel that young adults with symptoms of leg ischaemia and evidence of

BACKGROUND: Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is a rare anatomical anomaly that may rarely lead to secondary popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA). We present a case in which chronic extrinsic compression culminated in a giant PAA, highlighting the diagnostic workflow and surgical strategy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of exercise-induced pain and numbness in the right lower limb. On examination, popliteal and distal pulses were absent. Duplex ultrasound showed a 4.1 cm saccular popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA) containing a 15 mm mural thrombus; CT a

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is a form of vascular compromise that is characterized by compression of the popliteal artery by the muscular structures of the popliteal fossa. The underlying etiology of this condition stems from both congenital and functional mechanisms. This case report describes a patient with an insidious onset of bilateral leg pain, who was initially diagnosed with chronic exertional compartment syndrome and later found to have PAES.

Exertional leg pain occurs with notable frequency among athletes and poses diagnostic challenges to clinicians due to overlapping symptomatology. In this case report, we delineate the clinical presentation of a young collegiate soccer player who endured two years of progressive bilateral exertional calf pain and ankle weakness during athletic activity. The initial assessment yielded a diagnosis of chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS), predicated on the results of compartment testing. However, her clinical presentation was suspicious for concurrent type VI popliteal artery entrapment

Although rare, popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) should be considered in every young patient presenting with unexplained leg ischemia or exercise-induced claudication. Failure to recognize this condition can lead to delayed diagnosis, inappropriate treatment, and even limb-threatening complications. Symptoms such as calf pain, cramping, and paresthesia often overlap with musculoskeletal or vascular conditions, underscoring the need for a high index of suspicion. Diagnosis requires dynamic imaging with provocative maneuvers; while angiography remains the gold standard, Doppler ultraso

PURPOSE: This report summarizes our experience with the popliteal entrapment syndrome in 88 limbs (48 patients) treated during a 10-year period.
METHOD: The study cohort consisted of a retrospective analysis of those patients who were seen with symptoms of claudication or severe ischemia by a single surgical group and in whom unequivocal evidence of popliteal entrapment was shown either with angiography or at the time of operation. The cases were collected prospectively in a private vascular surgical practice.
RESULTS: Bilateral popliteal entrapment was found in 40 of the 48 patients. The me

INTRODUCTION: Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) results from extrinsic compression of the popliteal artery as it passes through the popliteal fossa due to congenital musculotendinous anomalies or acquired muscle hypertrophy. The consequence of this compression is a progressive damage to the arterial wall, which can ultimately cause irreversible injury. This damage initially manifests as intermittent claudication, which usually occurs in young, athletic individuals with no cardiovascular risk factors. There may be an overlap of symptoms with other conditions, making diagnosis challeng

BACKGROUND: Osteochondromas (or exostoses) are the most common benign tumors of the bone. Vascular complications of these tumors are rare but have been increasingly reported in recent literature.
AIM: Throughout an unusual case report of popliteal artery entrapment syndrome secondary to a femoral osteochondroma, we highlight the necessity of thorough clinical and radiological examinations as well as meticulous and prompt surgical resection.
CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old male patient, who had been diagnosed with multiple osteochondromas and had never been operated on, presented with a one-year h

PURPOSE: To evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) findings in popliteal artery entrapment syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven limbs of 6 patients (5 men and 1 woman; mean age, 36 +/- 12 years) with popliteal artery entrapment syndrome were evaluated retrospectively. Both MRI and DSA were performed on each affected limb.
RESULTS: MRI findings established the diagnosis of type-3 popliteal artery entrapment syndrome in 4 limbs, and type-2 in 3 limbs. Abnormal MRI findings included popliteal artery thrombosis with aneurysm in 2 limbs (29%), poplit
