Popliteal valve incompetence and postoperative deep vein thrombosis.

In 79 patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery the preoperative condition of the popliteal vein valves was assessed by Doppler ultrasonography. Presence of postoperative deep vein thrombosis was determined by bilateral ascending phlebography seven to ten days after surgery. Antithrombotic prophylaxis consisted solely of TED stockings and early mobilization. The overall incidence of deep vein thrombosis was 20%. All thrombi were calf vein thrombi. One of these thrombi extended into the popliteal region and two into the femoral region. The incidence of deep vein thrombosis in patients

Thrombophlebitis following a bullet embolus to the popliteal vein.

A patient who had a bullet embolus to the right popliteal vein developed an extensive thrombophlebitis from the popliteal to the common iliac vein. We suggest that following extraction of a bullet that has embolized to a major extremity vein, it may be necessary to anticoagulate the patient.

Unusual approach to popliteal vein bypass graft stenosis following failed angioplasty in popliteal entrapment syndrome.

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is where the popliteal artery is compressed-typically by the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle. PAES is typically treated surgically with popliteal artery release with or without bypass. Graft stenosis is a recognised complication of vein grafts. These are normally treated endovascularly. Endarterectomy of venous graft stenosis may be a useful tool in selected cases, where an endovascular approach was unsuccessful. Long-term follow-up of graft stenosis endarterectomy will allow us to determine effectiveness of this method of treatment where oth

Treatment of popliteal venous aneurysms by femoral vein ligation.

Popliteal venous aneurysms are highly associated with local venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. We propose a simple and new surgical therapy for popliteal venous aneurysm by ligation of the femoral vein. We describe the case of a woman with recurrent pulmonary embolism. Venous ultrasound examination showed a venous aneurysm of the right popliteal fossa. We proposed a ligature-section of the femoral vein just below the confluence of the great saphenous vein. After >6 years of follow-up, the patient is asymptomatic, with a completely normal life and only a small amount of edema of the righ

Migration of Spinal Hardware Into the Popliteal Vein: A Case Report.

CASE: A 41-year-old woman with prior T12-L4 instrumentation for adolescent lumbar scoliosis presented with left posteromedial thigh pain initially diagnosed as an adductor strain. Two years later, she re-presented with knee stiffness, lower leg mottling, and paresthesia suspected to be reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Radiographs later revealed a 13.6-cm radiopaque object in the popliteal fossa and rod absence from the lumbar spine. The spinal rod was removed from the popliteal vein by orthopaedic surgery. CONCLUSION: Radiographs are an easily obtained, low-cost, and high-yield resource that are

Fenestrated popliteal vein pierced by a branch of the tibial nerve.

Knowledge of anatomical variations is important so as to avoid potential iatrogenic injury or misdiagnosis on imaging. Here we report an unusual finding and relationship between the tibial nerve and popliteal vein. During the routine dissection of an adult cadaver, it was noted that a branch of the tibial nerve in the popliteal fossa pierced the most distal part of the popliteal vein. This unusual finding is described and relevant reports in the literature discussed. Our hopes are that such a report might help surgeons avoid injury to such a fenestrated popliteal vein and the tibial nerve bran

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal vein: report of a case.

Adventitial cystic disease (ACD), also known as cystic mucoid or myxomatous degeneration, is a rare vascular disease seen mainly in arteries. It is very unusual for these cystic masses to develop in a vein. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman with leg swelling caused by ACD arising in the popliteal vein. The swelling appeared after a long period of standing. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a popliteal cystic mass and venography showed disrupted venous flow. We resected the cyst wall without venous reconstruction, after which venous blood flow normalized and her symptoms subsided.

[Entrapment syndrome of the popliteal vein: results of the surgical treatment].

Entrapment of the popliteal vein has been rarely reported. Purpose of the present study was to evaluate the long-term results of vein decompression in the popliteal vein entrapment syndrome. Between August 1986 and June 1994, 35 patients (49 limbs) were operated on for popliteal vein entrapment syndrome at our Institution. There were 28 female and 7 male (mean age 44.5 +/- 13.5 years). Seven limbs had associated a popliteal artery entrapment syndrome. Twenty-three (49.6%) limbs presented with skin changes ascribed to venous disease. Preoperative diagnosis consisted on Doppler CW, Duplex Scan,

Penetrating injuries of the popliteal vein: a report on 34 cases.

The results of treatment in 34 cases of penetrating injury to the popliteal vein are presented. In 26 cases there was associated damage to the popliteal artery. Satisfactory venous repair by lateral suture was achieved in 11 of 12 limbs. Autogenous vein grafts were used to repair the damaged popliteal vein in 10 limbs. In 4 the saphenous vein was anastomosed directly to the popliteal vein; in 6 cases it was used as a wide-bored panel or compilation graft. Three popliteal veins were ligated. Major postoperative limb oedema and chronic venous insufficiency were not a problem in those cases where

Immediate revascularization of the popliteal artery and vein: report of a case.

A case demonstrating the successful use of Silastic shunts for immediate limb revascularization is presented. Temporary limb revascularization may reduce the rate of amputation in combined popliteal vessel injuries. A major cause of limb loss is delay between injury and revascularization, including transport time and time spent dealing with other injuries. Repair of the popliteal vein increases the chance of successful limb salvage. Temporary Silastic shunts can alleviate time loss while others problems are dealt with and allow rapid venous, as well as arterial, revascularization. The technica

Cystic Adventitial Disease of the Popliteal Vein: A Case Report.

Venous cystic adventitial disease (VCAD) is a rare vascular anomaly located in the common femoral vein in most cases. We describe the case of a 59-year-old female patient with right leg edema who was misdiagnosed with deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremity at another hospital. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed a round mass in the popliteal vein, with a narrow lumen. Considering the location of the lesion, absence of a history of deep venous thrombosis and trauma, and clinical manifestations, the diagnosis is likely a popliteal vein adventitial cyst. Segmental popliteal vein resectio

The Popliteal Vein Thrombosis in A Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in pediatric patients is significantly much lower than adults. Most of the pediatric in-patients with major trauma, sepsis do not undergo routine screening for DVT. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 12-year-old boy presented to us with minor trauma to right ankle associated with swelling, pain and had associated cough, and fever. On investigation with plain X-ray of right ankle/chest, and blood parameters, patient was suspected of having cellulitis of right leg with chest infection. Patient was treated with IV Cloxacillin and ample o

[Arthroscopic meniscectomy complicated by lesions to the popliteal artery and vein].

Endoscopic surgery can replace operative procedures. The evolution of arthroscopy leads to realize intra articular surgery more and more complicated. However, any surgical procedure involve some risks, and surgeons have to be prudent in use of new instruments or new technics. These need a radio surgical environment adapted to all surgery.

Release of 6-nitrodopamine from human popliteal artery and vein.

6-Nitrodopamine (6-ND) is a novel catecholamine that is released from human umbilical cord vessels, and it causes vascular relaxation by acting as a dopamine D2-receptor antagonist. Here it was investigated whether human peripheral vessels obtained from patients who have undergone surgery for leg amputation release 6-ND, and its action in these tissues. Popliteal artery and vein strips present basal release of 6-ND, as measured by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The release was significantly reduced when the tissues were pre-treated with the nitric oxide synthase inh

Popliteal vein reflux reduces the healing of chronic venous ulcer.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between deep and superficial venous reflux and healing of venous ulceration by non-operative compression therapy has not been studied previously. METHODS: A total of 155 patients with chronic venous ulcers underwent duplex ultrasonography before treatment with compression bandaging at a hospital-based venous clinic. RESULTS: At 24 weeks, 104 (67 per cent) of ulcers had healed. There was no significant difference in the pattern of either deep or superficial venous reflux between healed and non-healed ulcers except with respect to the popliteal vein. In healed ulce

Pulmonary Embolism Caused by Popliteal Vein Aneurysm: A Case Report.

In this case report, we describe an unusual episode of bilateral submassive pulmonary embolism (PE) caused by a popliteal vein aneurysm (PVA). The development of PE stems from many risk factors including obesity (BMI³ 30 kg/m2), hypertension, cigarette smoking (greater than 25 cigarettes per day), increasing age, surgery, immobility, malignancy, and inherited thrombophilia. A PVA is a rare but significant cause of PE. A 28-year-old male presented to the emergency department with progressive shortness of breath. He had no significant past medical history, no family history of deep vein thrombos

Importance of Venorrhaphy in Combined Popliteal Artery and Popliteal Vein Injury: A Case Report and Description of the Surgical Technique.

Popliteal vein (PV) injuries, which are less common than popliteal artery (PA) injuries, present with significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. These injuries are associated with a wide range of injuries. Early recognition and interventions provide better outcomes. Over time, the management of PV injuries has been shifted from ligation of the vessel to different forms of venous repair. We present a case of a 40-year-old female presenting with a supracondylar femur fracture with concomitant PA and PV injury. PA was repaired with a synthetic graft. However, the graft thrombosed due to v
