Spatial coevolutionary dynamics in population games with environmental feedbacks.

Feedback between game strategies and environmental states is common in human-natural systems. Existing studies have reported several interesting dynamical behaviors by studying the impact of environmental state on strategy selection. In this paper we construct a characterization of environmental states, assuming that environmental states are determined by local and global environmental states. Based on this we construct a spatial multiagent coevolutionary model to describe the strategy evolution of populations and analyze the model's dynamics by means of Monte Carlo simulations and mean-field

Parkinsonism disrupts the population-level organization of cortical dynamics.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is marked by impairments in voluntary movement, including prolonged movement preparation and execution, yet how parkinsonism alters neural processing to produce these deficits remains unresolved. Prior work examining M1 spiking activity in parkinsonian states has largely characterized firing-rate changes and motor representations at the level of individual neurons, with inconsistent results and limited insight into population-level organization. Here we investigated how parkinsonism reshapes the population-level organization of neural activity in M1 during movement. We

Global population genetics and evolutionary dynamics of Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is a common commensal yeast and an opportunistic pathogen of global health importance. However, its global geographic and temporal patterns of genetic variation remain poorly understood. Here we analyzed sequence data on seven housekeeping loci from >5000 isolates in the C. albicans PubMLST database representing >60 countries and spanning >70 years. Diploid sequences at each locus were phased into haplotypes to provide higher-resolution insights into diversity, differentiation, and recombination. Our analyses revealed high allelic and genotypic diversities within most geograph

Optimal control dynamics of Gonorrhea in a structured population.

Gonorrhea is a serious global health problem due to its high incidence, with approximately 82.4 million new cases in 2020. To evaluate the consequences of targeted dynamic control of gonorrhea infection transmission, a model for gonorrhea with optimal control analysis is proposed for a structured population. The study looked at the model's positively invariant and bounded regions. The gonorrhea secondary infection expression, R0 for the structured population is computed. The maximum principle of Pontryagin is utilised to construct the optimal system for the formulated mathematical model. To re

Population Dynamics of Chewing Lice (Phthiraptera) Infesting Birds (Aves).

In the past 25 years, studies on interactions between chewing lice and their bird hosts have increased notably. This body of work reveals that sampling of live avian hosts, collection of the lice, and the aggregated distributions of louse infestations pose challenges for assessing louse populations. The number of lice on a bird varies among host taxa, often with host size and social system. Host preening behavior limits louse abundance, depending on bill shape. The small communities of lice (typically one-four species) that live on individual birds show species-specific patterns of abundance,

Population Dynamics of Early Visual Cortex during Working Memory.

Although the content of working memory (WM) can be decoded from the spatial patterns of brain activity in early visual cortex, how populations encode WM representations remains unclear. Here, we address this limitation by using a model-based approach that reconstructs the feature encoded by population activity measured with fMRI. Using this approach, we could successfully reconstruct the locations of memory-guided saccade goals based on the pattern of activity in visual cortex during a memory delay. We could reconstruct the saccade goal even when we dissociated the visual stimulus from the sac

Sensory dynamics of visual hallucinations in the normal population.

Hallucinations occur in both normal and clinical populations. Due to their unpredictability and complexity, the mechanisms underlying hallucinations remain largely untested. Here we show that visual hallucinations can be induced in the normal population by visual flicker, limited to an annulus that constricts content complexity to simple moving grey blobs, allowing objective mechanistic investigation. Hallucination strength peaked at ~11 Hz flicker and was dependent on cortical processing. Hallucinated motion speed increased with flicker rate, when mapped onto visual cortex it was independent

Population dynamics of Trichuris suis in trickle-infected pigs.

The population dynamics of Trichuris suis in pigs was studied during long-term experimental infections. Twenty-three 10-week-old pigs were inoculated with 5 T. suis eggs/kg/day. Seven, 8, and 8 pigs were necropsied at weeks 4, 8, and 14 post-start of infection (p.i.), respectively. The median numbers of worms in the colon were 538 (min-max: 277-618), 332 (14-1140) and 0 (0-4) at 4, 8, and 14 weeks p.i. respectively, suggesting an increased aggregation of the worms with time and acquisition of nearly sterile immunity. The serum levels of T. suis specific antibodies (IgG1, IgG2 and IgA) peaked a

Population dynamics of Ascaris suum in trickle-infected pigs.

The population dynamics of Ascaris suum was studied by long-term exposure of pigs to infective eggs. The pigs were experimentally inoculated with 25 A. suum eggs/kg/day, and 7, 8, and 8 pigs were necropsied at weeks 4, 8, and 14 postinoculation (PI), respectively. Despite the fact that the pigs were continuously reinfected, dramatic reductions in numbers of liver lesions (white spots) and migrating lung larvae were observed as a function of time. However, even at the end of the study, a few larvae were able to complete migration, but these larvae seemed unable to mature in the small intestine.

Modeling on-farm Escherichia coli O157:H7 population dynamics.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a potentially fatal foodborne pathogen with a putative reservoir for human infection in feedlot cattle. In order to more effectively identify targets for intervention strategies, we aimed to (1) assess the role of various feedlot habitats in E. coli O157:H7 propagation and (2) provide a framework for examining the relative contributions of animals and the surrounding environment to observed pathogen dynamics. To meet these goals we developed a mathematical model based on an ecological metapopulation framework to track bacterial population dynamics inside and outside

Global Population Structure and Dynamics of Wheat Powdery Mildew.

The global movement of pests and pathogens can often be traced to human migratory activities that include the movement of agricultural crops. The causal agent of wheat powdery mildew, the ascomycete fungus Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (B. graminis f. sp. tritici), is internationally distributed and one of the most rapidly adapting phytopathogens. To investigate population genetic structure, diversity and migratory potential, reduced-representation sequencing was performed on a collection of 653 B. graminis f. sp. tritici isolates from 16 countries and 6 continents. Phylogenetic inference,

Aphid endosymbionts revisited: molecular detection, diversity, and population dynamics.

The diversity of endosymbionts detected in the same aphid hosts often varies markedly across studies. Some of this variation may reflect genuine biological differences associated with climate, host plants, natural enemies and/or pest management, but it may also arise from the differences in molecular and analytic approaches used in detecting and characterizing endosymbiont diversity. The goal of this review is to highlight inconsistencies and how they can be resolved. This is important if the intriguing effects of endosymbionts established from detailed laboratory studies are to be linked to t

HPV oral and oropharynx infection dynamics in young population.

The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers, especially those from the head and neck region, has increased. The relatively early age of presentation of HPV-positive head and neck cancer (HNC) indicates that viral infection might be acquired early in life. Persistent HPV infection has been recognized as the main risk factor for cancer development, but most studies have focused on evaluating HPV persistence in the genital region. Thus, in this work, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of HPV in oral cavity and oropharynx in a young population, as well as the possible persisten

The Population Biology and Transmission Dynamics of Loa loa.

Endemic to Central Africa, loiasis - or African eye worm (caused by the filarial nematode Loa loa) - affects more than 10 million people. Despite causing ocular and systemic symptoms, it has typically been considered a benign condition, only of public health relevance because it impedes mass drug administration-based interventions against onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis in co-endemic areas. Recent research has challenged this conception, demonstrating excess mortality associated with high levels of infection, implying that loiasis warrants attention as an intrinsic public health proble

Within-host population dynamics of antibiotic-resistant M. tuberculosis.

Mathematical models for the population dynamics of de novo resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis within individuals are studied. The models address the use of one or two antimicrobial drugs for treating latent tuberculosis (TB). They consider the effect of varying individual immune response strength on the dynamics for the appearance of resistant bacteria. From the analysis of the models, equilibria and local stabilities are determined. For assessing temporal dynamics and global stability for sensitive and drug-resistant bacteria, numerical simulations are used. Results indicate that for a low

Trichuris suis population dynamics following a primary experimental infection.

Trichuris suis population kinetics was studied by experimentally infecting 40 pigs with 5000 T. suis infective eggs. Six pigs were sacrificed every 2 weeks from 1 to 9 weeks post-inoculation (p.i.) and the remaining 10 pigs were sacrificed 11 weeks p.i. to estimate worm burdens. An equal number of uninfected control pigs were sacrificed at the same time points for comparison. Egg excretions from each pig were evaluated every week from 5 to 11 weeks p.i. Peripheral blood eosinophilia and basophilia were also evaluated every 2 weeks throughout the experimental period. After an initial almost 100

Population dynamics of Wolbachia bacterial endosymbionts in Brugia malayi.

The human filarial nematode Brugia malayi contains an endosymbiotic bacterium, Wolbachia. We used real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) and microscopy to investigate the population dynamics of the bacterium-nematode association. Two Wolbachia (wsp and ftsZ) and one nematode (gst) genes were amplified from all life-cycle stages of B. malayi and results expressed as gene copies per worm and as Wolbachia/nematode ratios. Since the genes were single copy and there was one genome per Wolbachia, the gene copy numbers were equivalent to the numbers of bacteria. These were similar in

Cannabinoid modulation of central amygdala population dynamics during threat investigation.

Cannabinoids precipitate anxiety and panic reactions in humans and can increase threat-related defensive responses in rodents in a dose- and context-dependent manner. Despite these well-established findings, how cannabinoids affect in vivo neural dynamics associated with threat-related behavior has not been examined. Here, we show that cannabinoids dose-dependently augment threat-induced defensive responses and the activity of central amygdala (CeA) somatostatin neurons (SOM) in mice, which are required for cannabinoid augmentation of threat avoidance, but not freezing. Moreover, enhanced anta

Network state dynamics underpin basal craving in a transdiagnostic population.

Emerging fMRI methods quantifying brain dynamics present an opportunity to capture how fluctuations in brain responses give rise to individual variations in affective and motivation states. Although the experience and regulation of affective states affect psychopathology, their underlying time-varying brain responses remain unclear. Here, we present a novel framework to identify network states matched to an affective experience and examine how the dynamic engagement of these network states contributes to this experience. We apply this framework to investigate network state dynamics underlying

Genome and population dynamics during chronic infection with Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori is responsible for one of the most prevalent bacterial infections worldwide. Chronic infection typically leads to chronic active gastritis. Clinical sequelae, including peptic ulcers, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma or, most importantly, gastric adenocarcinoma develop in 10-15% of cases. H. pylori is characterized by extensive inter-strain diversity which is the result of a high mutation rate, recombination, and a large repertoire of restriction-modification systems. This diversity is thought to be a major contributor to H. pylori's persistence and exceptional ap
