Anthropometric growth study of the ear in a Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: A large number of anthropometric studies of the auricle have been reported in different nations, but little data were available in the Chinese population. The aim of this study was to analyze growth changes in the ear by measuring the width and length of ears in a Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 480 participants were enrolled and classified into 1-, 3-, 5-, 7-, 9-, 12-, 14-, and 18-year groups (half were boys and half were girls in each group). Ear length, ear width, body weight, and body length were measured and recorded; ear index was calculated according to ear length a

Growth dynamics and the evolution of cooperation in microbial populations.

Microbes providing public goods are widespread in nature despite running the risk of being exploited by free-riders. However, the precise ecological factors supporting cooperation are still puzzling. Following recent experiments, we consider the role of population growth and the repetitive fragmentation of populations into new colonies mimicking simple microbial life-cycles. Individual-based modeling reveals that demographic fluctuations, which lead to a large variance in the composition of colonies, promote cooperation. Biased by population dynamics these fluctuations result in two qualitativ

Growth of deleterious mutant genes in a large population.

Formulae for the arrival probability and first arrival time for a single mutant gene to reach a certain number have been obtained by using a continuous branching process. If the mean of the progeny number of heterozygotes is less than one the arrival probability increases with increasing variance of the progeny distribution whereas if the mean is greater than one the contrary is true. Since most human populations are growing at fairly high rates, the result indicates that the probability for a single mutation to grow to a large number is quite high. Numerical computations show that the mean fi

Tobacco and nicotine population health planning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population growth.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population growth has important implications for tobacco and nicotine health planning. Using the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) DataLab, we examined weighted estimates of the absolute number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 18 years and over, drawing on the 2012-13 and 2018-19 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Surveys. We compared the absolute number of people who currently smoke, stratified by age, state/territory, and sex. There was a 2.5 percentage point decline in smoking prevalence over this period, but

Reproductive health, population growth, economic development and environmental change.

World population will increase by 1000 million, or by 20%, within 10 years. Ninety-five per cent of this increase will occur in the South, in areas that are already economically, environmentally and politically fragile. Morbidity and mortality associated with reproduction will be greater in the current decade than in any period in human history. Annually, 40-60 million pregnancies will be terminated and 5-10 million children will die within one year of birth. AIDS-related infections, e.g. tuberculosis, will undermine health care in Africa (and elsewhere) and in places AIDS-related deaths will

Congenital malformations and intrauterine growth retardation: a population study.

The relationship between congenital malformations and intrauterine growth retardation was investigated using data from the population-based Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program. Between 1970 and 1984, the system ascertained 13,074 infants with major structural malformations diagnosed in the first year of life and born to metropolitan Atlanta residents. These infants were classified as having intrauterine growth retardation if their birth weight was below the race-, sex-, and gestational age-specific tenth percentile limits for all Atlanta births. Overall, the frequency of intrauteri

Population-wide cerebellar growth models of children and adolescents.

In the past, the cerebellum has been best known for its crucial role in motor function. However, increasingly more findings highlight the importance of cerebellar contributions in cognitive functions and neurodevelopment. Using a total of 7240 neuroimaging scans from 4862 individuals, we describe and provide detailed, openly available models of cerebellar development in childhood and adolescence (age range: 6-17 years), an important time period for brain development and onset of neuropsychiatric disorders. Next to a traditionally used anatomical parcellation of the cerebellum, we generated gro

Active population growth and immigration hypotheses in Western Europe.

The paper examines, in respect of 12 Western European countries over a period of 20 years, the widely held view that any decline in their working population should be offset by greater reliance on immigrant labor. This research, based on demographic projections and forecasts regarding labor market participation rates by age and sex for each of the countries concerned, focuses on the two most likely scenarios. It appears that only Italy will be faced with a fall in its working population. All other western countries will either maintain the same level or, more generally, see their workforce gro

The Growth of Older Inmate Populations: How Population Aging Explains Rising Age at Admission.

OBJECTIVES: Older inmates are the fastest growing segment of the prison population; however, the reasons for this are not well understood. One explanation is that the general population is aging, driving prison age distributions to change. For this article, we study the role of population aging in prison growth by investigating how the baby boom phenomenon of post-World War II has contributed to the growth of older inmate populations. METHOD: We identify the impact of population aging using simulation methods that explain prison growth as the combination of criminal justice processes. RESULT

Rates of growth of abdominal aortic aneurysms in an Irish population.

INTRODUCTION: An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a disease with a high mortality and morbidity in both acute and elective settings and thus the timing of intervention and surveillance is of high importance. These are derived from historical growth patterns. However, real-world expansion rates may vary between populations. Indeed there has been no published study examining this in an Irish population. This study aimed to evaluate AAA growth in a local surveillance cohort and assess concordance with assumptions underlying the 2024 ESVS surveillance guidance. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was p

Feeding experiences and growth status in a Rett syndrome population.

OBJECTIVES: Feeding difficulties in Rett syndrome are complex and multifactorial. In this study, we describe the feeding experiences in Rett syndrome and examine the factors affecting growth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using questionnaire data related to a population-based cohort, ages 2 to 29 years (n = 201), we measured the feeding experiences, growth, and factors affecting growth (enteral nutritional support, mutations, mobility, breath-holding, hyperventilation) in subjects with Rett syndrome. RESULTS: The mean weight, height, and body mass index z scores in subjects with Rett syndrome were

Secular growth changes in the Hellenic population in the twentieth century.

Statural growth is dependent on hereditary and environmental factors, i.e disease, nutrition. The improvement of socioeconomic conditions that took place during the 20th century resulted in a secular trend towards greater height and earlier sexual maturation. Greek society has changed dramatically from a mainly agricultural society at the beginning of the 20th century to a mainly urban one in the second half of the century, and during this period Greece became a developed country. The various studies examining the height of children living in Athens during this period show a gradual increase i

Ilium morphological variation during growth in forager populations.

Human pelvic morphology has often been described in terms of an evolutionary compromise between bipedalism, encephalization, and obstetrics; however, recent research has argued that the pelvis is more biologically plastic than previously thought. Variation in pelvic form exists among adult modern human populations, but the factors influencing this variation, and when it manifests during growth, remain to be understood. The aim of this study is to investigate patterns of growth and development of the ilium and to consider factors that may influence variation. The presence of variation in lower

Application of new fetal growth standards in a multiethnic population.

OBJECTIVES: Ultrasound assessment of fetal growth is essential to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes. Intergrowth-21st developed international standards. Currently, we use in France chart based on Hadlock's formula. This study aims to evaluate, the impact of switching from national curves to IG-21 curves or a combination of IG-21 with Hadlock. METHODS: The study population consisted of 3 697 singleton pregnancies with fetal biometry measured between 22 and 38 weeks of gestation. Z-scores were calculated for each biometry according to CFEF and IG-21. The estimated fetal weight and its Z-score w

Fetal growth trajectory and risk for eczema in a Saudi population.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies in Western cohorts have identified associations between increasing fetal abdominal circumference (AC) during mid-pregnancy and increased risk for eczema and atopy. We sought to replicate these findings in a Saudi population where antenatal environmental exposures are different compared with Western countries. METHODS: A Saudi birth cohort was recruited to relate maternal dietary intake and fetal growth to wheeze, eczema, and rhinitis in the first 2 yrs. Fetal size was determined from routine ultrasound scan measurements in the second and third trimesters and birthwe

Nutrition, population growth and disease: a short history of lactose.

Food and nutrition have played a crucial role in biological evolution. Lactation in mammals was one key invention. A central role in milk is played by lactose, otherwise an exotic sugar in nature. Lactose digestion needs the induction of specialized gut enzymes. This enzyme is shut off in a precisely timed developmental step leading to lactose malabsorption promoting weaning in the young and ovulation in the mother. The lactose-lactase system could thus regulate optimal birth spacing in land mammals. The domestication of cattle promoted milk as a food item also for adult nutrition. This was on
