Health status of vulnerable populations.

The notion of risk underlying the concept of vulnerability implies that everyone is potentially vulnerable (or at risk), that is, there is always a chance of developing health problems. The risk is, however, greater for those with the least social status, social capital, and human capital resources to either prevent or ameliorate the origins and consequences of poor physical, psychological, or social health. The completeness and accuracy of information on the health status of the vulnerable populations examined here varies substantially across groups. Methodological work is needed to derive st

Oral Health in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

Tobacco use is a well-established risk factor for multiple adverse oral conditions. Few nationally representative oral health data sets encompass the current diversity of tobacco and nicotine products. This investigation examines the validity of oral health measures in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to assess relationships between tobacco use and oral health. Cross-sectional data from PATH Study wave 4 (N = 33,643 US adults, collected 2016-2018) were used to obtain estimates for 6 self-reported oral conditions (e.g., bone loss around teeth, tooth extractions) and

Flooding, Sociospatial Risk, and Population Health.

Climate change and population settlement patterns are altering the severity and spatial dimensions of flooding. Despite associational evidence linking flood exposure to population health in the United States, few studies have used counterfactual strategies to address confounding or examined how sociospatial determinations of risk, such as floodplain delineation, affect well-being. Using the case of Hurricane Harvey, I leverage novel, repeated cross-sectional health survey data from Houston immediately predisaster (N = 2,540) and six to nine months postdisaster (N = 2,798), linked to local floo

Public Policy Approaches to Population Health.

The United States spends more per capita on health care than any other country and has worse health outcomes. Public policy can influence almost all aspects of health. Publicly funded insurance pays for health care for more than half of Americans. For individuals and employers that purchase insurance, the regulatory environment influences which insurance products can be purchased as well as by whom and for how much. Health policy levers at federal, state, and local levels can exert financial and regulatory influence over care. This influence determines what is health care, with increasing fede

Health and health care access in the US transgender population health (TransPop) survey.

BACKGROUND: Probability and nonprobability-based studies of US transgender persons identify different disparities in health and health care access. OBJECTIVES: We used TransPop, the first US national probability survey of transgender persons, to describe and compare measures of health and health access among transgender, nonbinary, and cisgender participants. We directly compared the results with 2015 US Transgender Survey (USTS) data and with previously published analyses from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). METHODS: All participants were screened by Gallup Inc., whi

Population health strategies for health equity in chronic kidney disease management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a widespread health issue, affecting one out of every 10 adults. This prevalence is even higher among vulnerable and underserved populations, including low-income individuals, racial and ethnic minorities, and immigrants. Urban areas such as New York City and Los Angeles County offer municipal safety-net healthcare systems for these groups. RECENT FINDINGS: Safety-net providers are essential to the healthcare landscape for vulnerable populations with chronic diseases including the Los Angeles County Health Services that exemplifies how effect

Community Social Capital and Population Health Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: While the association between economic connectedness and social mobility has now been documented, the potential linkage between community-level economic connectedness and population health outcomes remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between community social capital measures (defined as economic connectedness, social cohesion, and civic engagement) and population health outcomes (defined across prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, kidney disease, and obesity). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study included communities

The Health of America's Aging Prison Population.

Older incarcerated individuals comprise the fastest growing demographic in the US prison system. Unhealthy lifestyles among incarcerated individuals and inadequate health care lead to earlier onset and more rapid progression of many chronic conditions that are prevalent among community-living older adults. There are limited peer-reviewed epidemiologic data in this area; however, there is growing interest in identifying strategies for housing aging incarcerated individuals, delivering appropriate health care in prisons, and coordinating after-release health care. In this systematic review, we s

Cardiovascular health in an aging HIV population.

: Populations living with HIV who access effective antiretroviral therapies are ageing and thus facing chronic disease-related comorbidities. Cardiovascular disease is now a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the HIV population as in the general population. The increased incidence of cardiovascular complications experienced by the HIV population is due to physiological aging and consequently the increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, and renal failure. Whether HIV itself is an additive and independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a central question. If and h

Psychedelics and mental health: a population study.

BACKGROUND: The classical serotonergic psychedelics LSD, psilocybin, mescaline are not known to cause brain damage and are regarded as non-addictive. Clinical studies do not suggest that psychedelics cause long-term mental health problems. Psychedelics have been used in the Americas for thousands of years. Over 30 million people currently living in the US have used LSD, psilocybin, or mescaline. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the lifetime use of psychedelics and current mental health in the adult population. METHOD: Data drawn from years 2001 to 2004 of the National Survey on

A Strategy for Addressing Population Health Management.

CONTEXT: Population health management in the era of the Affordable Care Act focuses on identifying needs of health care service areas for targeted strategies. The United States has a "health disadvantage" compared with peer countries, particularly regarding obesity and women's life expectancy, while having high rates of mammography screening. Emphasizing lifestyle factors is a strategy to reduce one's risk of obesity and heart disease, as well as some breast cancers. OBJECTIVE: We explored perceptions of the risk of female population-based breast cancer mortality compared with heart disease m

Hearing health survey of the population in Bangkok.

In this cross-sectional random survey among Thai adults living in Bangkok, we aimed to identify the prevalence of hearing problems and examine their relationship with individual factors. We administered a self-report questionnaire and performed pure-tone air conduction threshold audiometry. A total of 2463 participants (1728 female individuals) aged 15-96 years were included. The hearing loss prevalence was 53.02% and increased with age. The prevalence of a moderate or greater degree of hearing impairment was 2.8%. Participants aged 65 years and over had 8.56 and 6.79 times greater hearing los

[For a communication addressing populations' health literacy].

The concept of "health literacy" has been widely used in English-speaking countries for about 20 years. However, its meaning has evolved since its first definition as "cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health", to be most often centered on the narrower meaning of "functional health literacy", which is the ability to read and understand written medical documents. This narrow definition excludes illiterate populations and don't take into consideration the

Building on a legacy for the era of population health.

The 2011 Joplin tornado was a catastrophic EF5 multiple-vortex tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri, late in the afternoon of Sunday, May 22, 2011. It was part of a larger, late-May tornado outbreak and reached a maximum width of nearly 1 mile (1.6 km) during its path through the city. Mercy St John's Hospital (which had recently joined Mercy Ministries) suffered a direct hit and was rendered nonuseable. A total of 183 patients and nearly 200 coworkers/staff members were evacuated from the building within the next 90 minutes. Triage centers were set up outside as hospitals of other areas opene
