[Modern methods of treatment and rehabilitation of the post-concussion syndrome].

Traumatic brain injury is an urgent problem of modern healthcare, as it affects the most able-bodied part of the population. Mild traumatic brain injury is the most common traumatic brain injury. Generally, clinical recovery after a mild brain injury occurs within two weeks, but in some cases, the symptoms that occur after the injury persist for a prolonged period. This condition is called post-concussion syndrome. A search and review of Russian and foreign literature was conducted using the keywords «treatment of post-concussion syndrome», «rehabilitation of post-concussion syndrome», and «ap

Network Analysis and Precision Rehabilitation for the Post-concussion Syndrome.

Some people experience persistent symptoms following a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), and the etiology of those symptoms has been debated for generations. Post-concussion-like symptoms are caused by many factors both before and after MTBI, and this non-specificity is the bedrock of the conundrum regarding the existence of the post-concussion syndrome. A latent model or common cause theory for the syndrome is inconsistent with the prevailing biopsychosocial conceptualization. It is the thesis of this paper that adopting a network perspective for persistent symptoms following MTBI, includin

Post concussion syndrome ebb and flow: longitudinal effects and management.

This research identified persistent post concussion symptoms (PCS) in a group of 20 adult subjects. PCS generally lasted for two years with a mean of 3.35 years. Typical symptoms included physical and cognitive fatigue, depressive behaviors, sensitivity to noise, social withdrawal, irritability, concentration and problem solving difficulties, loss of libido and much difficulty making decisions at even the simplest strategic level. They represented a hard core group for whom the original symptoms persisted well beyond the 6~month period. Participants identified their PCS according to sensory, s

Post-concussion syndrome. Brain damage, constitutional characteristics and environmental reactions.

A 9-year-old boy was referred for child-psychiatric examination because of failure in school, restlessness, impulsiveness and concentration difficulties. The symptomatology was ascribed to a previous severe head injury and defined as a post-concussion syndrome. During the examination it was found that he had an identical twin brother without a history of brain-damage. A comparison of the patient and his twin brother with the same examination methods at the age of 9 and 18 gave similar results. These indicate that factors other than brain damage also could explain a clinical picture with school

Post-concussion syndrome and pre-existing mood disorder: A case report.

Sport-related concussions in youth and adolescent athletes most commonly resolve within one week without residual symptoms, with athletes resuming full participation following return to play guidelines. A small percentage of athletes have persistent symptoms that cause significant morbidity, some of whom are ultimately diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome. In these athletes, symptoms in the emotional domain can be more prolonged than other domains, with athletes reporting anxiety and depression months to years following injury. A prior personal or family history of pre-existing mood disorde

Persistent post-concussion syndrome: pathophysiology, diagnosis, current and evolving treatment strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent post-concussion syndrome (PCS) following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) represents a growing global health challenge that significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Despite advances in acute concussion management, there remains a critical need for effective, evidence-based treatments for chronic PCS, as current interventions show limited success in addressing both symptoms and underlying pathophysiology. AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors examine recent advances in PCS pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches, and therapeutic interventions. The authors

A snake lady: post-concussion syndrome manifesting visual hallucinations of snakes.

A 37-year-old female was referred to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa with visual hallucinations of snakes that began ten months after a brief loss of consciousness in a car accident. She also complained about a persistent headache and depressed mood that began shortly after the accident. Her depressive symptoms did not respond to amitriptyline or ECT. By thoroughly reviewing the clinical features and course of this patient, we conclude that the she did not have a typical, definite psychiatric syndrome explaining her hallucinations. The hallucination of snakes in this cas

The Ketogenic Diet in the Treatment of Post-concussion Syndrome-A Feasibility Study.

Concussion is the most common form of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Although most patients' symptoms resolve within a month, patients with post-concussion syndrome (PCS) may continue to experience symptoms for years and have limited treatment options. This pilot study assessed the feasibility and symptom-related effects of a ketogenic diet (KD) in patients with PCS symptoms. The Ketogenic Diet in Post-Concussion Syndrome (KD-PCS) was a single-arm trial of a 2-month KD high in non-starchy vegetables and supplemented with medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. Macronutrient targets were ≥70%

Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation Therapy: A Novel Treatment for Post-Concussion Syndrome?

A subset of victims who experience concussion suffer from persistent symptoms spanning months to years post-injury, termed post-concussion syndrome (PCS). Problematically, there is lack of consensus for the treatment of PCS. Concussion injury involves a neurometabolic cascade leading to oxidative stress and neuroinflammation which parallels the oxidative stress loading occuring from age-related neurodegenerative conditions. Historical and recent evidence has emerged showing the efficacy of low-dose radiation therapy for many human diseases including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzhiemer

Complexity of post-concussion syndrome assessment and management: a case for customizing rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Post-concussion syndrome is a challenging condition to manage for even the most experienced chronic pain experts. Patients' presentations are heterogeneous with symptoms spanning physical, cognitive and emotional domains. The symptoms reported are often non-specific, making it difficult for health professionals to prescribe effective rehabilitation. The aim of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of a customized rehabilitation program based on subgroup determination following a standardized clinical exam in adults with post-concussion syndrome. METHODS: A total of 16

Post-concussion Syndrome Light Sensitivity: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Photophobia is considered the second most common symptom of both concussion and post-concussion syndrome. Soldiers on duty experience photophobia after blast-related concussions or mild traumatic brain injury in 60-75% of instances. In addition, soldiers report other symptoms, such as asthenopia, squinting, dry eyes and headaches, for which they are considered to be at high risk. According to the International Brain Injury Association, some concussed patients report indirect symptoms such as multi-tasking difficulties, dizziness, vertigo, and fatigue. Moreover, some concussed individuals exper

Brain dysfunction underlying prolonged post-concussive syndrome: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: One out of 4 patients who sustains a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) experiences persistent complaints, despite the absence of structural brain damage on conventional neuroimaging. Susceptibility to develop post concussive symptoms (PCS) is thought to originate from occult brain dysfunction. However, the influence of such neural changes on the development of persistent PCS is poorly characterized. METHODS: In this article, we aim to integrate findings from longitudinal studies that investigated across the spectrum of neuroimaging modalities the changes within the first twelve m

Clinical performance of a multiparametric MRI-based post concussive syndrome index.

INTRODUCTION: Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) has revealed measurable changes in the brains of patients with persistent post-concussive syndrome (PCS). Because of inconsistent results in univariate DTI metrics among patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), there is currently no single objective and reliable MRI index for clinical decision-making in patients with PCS. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a newly developed PCS Index (PCSI) derived from machine learning of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data to classify and differentiate subjects wit

Transcranial low-frequency pulsating electromagnetic fields (T-PEMF) as post-concussion syndrome treatment.

BACKGROUND: Treatment options for the subgroup of people who develop long-lasting symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury are limited. Transcranial pulsating low-frequency electromagnetic stimulation (T-PEMF) in other patient groups has shown promising results in several studies with proposed neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. OBJECTIVE: The present pilot study was conducted to access feasibility and tolerability of T-PEMF in treating post-concussion syndrome. METHODS: Seven patients with post-concussion syndrome received 5 weeks of daily 30 minutes T-PEMF treatment with e
